田单，是齐王田氏宗室的远房亲属。湣王时，田单为临淄管理市政的官署人员，不被人知晓（才干不被人赏识）。

及燕使乐毅伐破齐，齐湣王出奔，已而保莒城。

等到燕国派乐毅讨伐、攻破齐国，齐湣王出逃，不久退守莒城。

燕师长驱 平齐，而田单走安平，令其宗人尽断其车轴末 而傅铁笼。

燕国军队长驱直入，平定齐国，而田单逃往安平，命令族人都把车辆两端过于突出的部分锯去，另用铁箍来裹住轴头。

已而燕军攻安平，城坏，齐人走，争涂，以轊折车败，为燕所虏。

不久燕国军队攻打安平，城墙倒塌，齐人奔逃，争先夺路，因为车轴头被撞断，车身破坏。被燕军所俘虏。

唯田单宗人以铁笼故得脱，东保即墨。燕既尽降齐城，唯独莒、即墨不下。

惟有田单族人因为铁箍包住车轴的缘故，得以逃脱。往东退守即墨。燕军已经使齐国其他城邑全都投降了，只有莒城和即墨没有攻下。

燕军闻齐王在莒，并兵攻之。淖齿既杀湣王于莒，因坚守距燕军，数年不下。
