英语报刊选读课的教学目的旨在提高大学生阅读和理解英语报刊的能力，对英语报刊的语言风格与特色有所了解，了解英美历史、文化传统和当今社会的热点问题以及科技的最新发展状况等，以阅读和评论为主要训练的目的，注重阅读内容的理解和评论，词汇背景知识的掌握，以及报刊文章、新闻的标题、导语以及结构分析。 二、课程性质与定位
