欧洲文艺复兴以后,西方美术继续沿着以希腊、罗马古典美术为基础的写实美术传统发展。但是,毕竟时代不同了,西方美术也在不断地变革创新。17世纪流行的巴洛克风格,新出现的荷兰市民绘画,以及法国的古典主义、新古典主义和浪漫主义美术,就是这方面的突出代表。
畸形的珍珠——巴洛克
巴洛克源于葡萄牙语,意为畸形的珍珠。它是崇尚古典美术的学者,对于不遵守古典美术规则的艺术风格的一种贬称。实际上,力求突破既有规则的巴洛克风格美术,是为了适应当时天主教会和宫廷贵族审美趣味的需要,在传统美术基础上的变革、创新。它的发源地是17世纪初的意大利,后传播到佛兰德斯(今比利时)、西班牙等国。它表现在建筑、雕刻、绘画等方面。最主要的代表人物是意大利的贝尔尼尼(1598-1680年)、佛兰德斯的鲁本斯(1577-1640年)、西班牙委拉斯开兹。
