语言的功能主要有两个。第一，语言是人类社会最重要的交际工具。每个社会，无论它是经济发达的社会，还是经济十分落后的社会，都必须有属于自己的语言，都离不开语言这个交际工具，语言是组成社会必不可少的一个因素，是人类与动物相区别的重要特征之一。语言是联系社会成员的桥梁和纽带，没有语言，人类无法交际，人与人之间的联系就会中断，社会就会崩溃，不复存在。第二，语言又是人类的思维工具，没有语言，人类无法思维，也无法把思维成果表达出来。
