本单元编选了三篇古代人物传记。《廉颇蔺相如列传》《苏武传》为精读课文,《张衡》为略读课文。

这三篇课文也都是古代传记名篇,在写作技巧上有许多值得学习借鉴之处。它们都出于正史,基本上都是按正史列传常用的写法来写的,但每一篇又各有特点。《廉颇蔺相如列传》选取了“完璧归赵”“渑池之会”“廉蔺交欢”三个典型事件重点叙述,故事情节的推进及人物形象的塑造都在矛盾的发展变化中进行,集中表现了蔺相如大智大勇、威武不屈、不畏强势的形象及“先国家之急而后私仇”的崇高精神,同时也凸现了廉颇忠于国家、勇于改过的优秀品质。《苏武传》运用人物传记常用的手法,以顺序为主介绍苏武出使、被拘匈奴十九年,最后终得回国的全过程。以一系列事件和场面描写,刻画了一个面对威逼利诱而能坚守节操,历尽艰辛,不辱使命的爱国志士形象。《张衡传》概括记录了张衡一生在科学、文学、政治方面的诸多成就,记叙全面,有条不紊,却有重点突出。
