尽管，教育现代化在学术界至今没有一致的看法，更无公认的定义。但一直以来，学术界一般都认为，就广义而言，教育现代化是社会现代化的重要组成部分，是由工业化引起的，并与之相适应，由传统教育向现代教育的整体转换过程。狭义而言，教育现代化是通过主动吸收国外先进教育经验和充分利用本国教育中的积极因素赶超发达国家教育发展水平的过程。

这一界定包含三个相互联系的内容：
