一、课程性质和任务

本课程是高等职业技术院校海洋船舶驾驶专业的一门主干专业课程。它的任务是：训练学生在船值班工作的英语听说能力，为上船工作进行业务交流打下良好的语言基础。

二、课程教学目标

本课程的教学目标是：使学生具备一定的听力能力和较流利的值班驾驶员会话能力，达到《1978／95公约》和中华人民共和国海事局所规定的船舶操作级驾驶员的适任标准。

（一）知识教学目标

马尼拉修正案于2012年7月起实施，在船员的英语运用能力方面提出了更高的要求，从而进一步明确了高职航海英语教学的任务：即通过一定的口头或书面的渠道，提高学生的语言能力的同时，应进一步发展学生的交际能力。
