第一重境界是单词的初记。也就是“独上高楼，望尽天涯路”。这“高楼”在GRE里可指两样东西。一是红宝书，二是红宝书的增补“巅峰词汇”。红宝书的词汇大约7000—8000，巅峰词汇2000多。从历次考试的实践看，这10000来个单词基本涵盖了GRE高分所需的 所有词汇，所以，背韦氏字典既无可能也没有必要。

这个阶段背记的重点在于“望尽天涯路”——也就是把GRE所需的词汇高屋建瓴的“认识”一遍，没必要掌握太过精细的含义，也就是说看了单词能够反应出大概意思。在这样的策略下，此阶段不宜花太多时间，我觉得1个月左右时间足矣。有人用17天的 方法完成红宝的第一遍初记，但也有人反应难度较大。红宝的两个版本 99和2003无论哪个版本都可以，没有本质的区别。历次考试出红宝范围的生词在3到6个左右，2003年3月多了一些，10月少一些。《巅峰词汇》的作用就在于，消灭这些出红宝范围的生词，所以，读者应
