Comparative Study on Gothic Novels Written by Allan Poe and

Hawthorne

Abstract: Gothic novel is a rarity in the western literature garden, which is full of

mystery and terror, giving a person with unique spiritual shock and aesthetic feelings. It reaches its zenith, and has impact on many writers. Among these writers, the two most important ones are Allan Poe and Hawthorne. In the aspect of creation, the two writers have some similarities and also have some differences. The similarities of Allan Poe and Hawthorne’s gothic novels lie in the theme, atmosphere and skills. In terms of theme, the two writers mainly explore the human mind to show the human evil and to reflect the dark side of human nature. Meanwhile, their theme is both shaped in the dark, horrible and absurd atmosphere, through which the theme could be better understood. Besides, their similarities also performance in the using of symbolism and images. Their fictions present the bloodcurdling pictures to readers, but they make the readers think about the connotation and meaning from these stories. And the differences can be analyzed from two aspects. On one hand, the writing style is different between Allan Poe and Hawthorne, which are mainly showed from the descriptive and the narrative point of view. On the other hand, the content is different. Personality deficiency is the main theme of Allan Poe’s Gothic novels while Puritanism is the core in Hawthorne’s Gothic novels. 摘 要: 哥特式小说是西欧文学花园中的一朵奇葩，它充满着神秘与恐怖，给人以独

特的心灵震撼和审美感受。它盛极一时，许多作家都受过它的影响。在这些作家中，其中最重要的两位作家是爱伦坡和霍桑。在创作方面，这两位作家有相同点也有不同点。本文从主题,气氛和技巧三个方面讨论了爱伦坡和霍桑的作品的相似性。就主题而言，这两位作家主要探索人类心灵，来展示人类的邪恶，反映人性的黑暗面。与此同时，他们的主题是在黑暗，恐怖并且荒谬的这样一种氛围中营造的。通过这样恐怖的气氛让我们能够更好地体会到作品的主题。此外，他们的相同点还体现在象征和意象的使用方面。他们的小说呈现给读者的是一幅幅令人毛骨悚然的图片,但它们会让读者思考这些故事的内涵和意义。其次从两个方面来描述他们作品之间的差异性。一方面,爱伦坡和霍桑的作品之间的创作风格是不同的，这种差异主要从描写角度和叙事角度来呈现的。另一方面,创作内容是不同的，人格缺陷是爱伦坡哥特式作品的主题而霍桑的清教主义是他哥特式作品的核心。
