If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven?t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

A. science on learning a second language B. that language can help brain power

C.man?s ability of learning a second language D. language learning and maths study 2.We may know from the scientific findings that ____________.

B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn?t know a second language C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people?s brain

D. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is 3. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that ____________. A. learning a second language is the same as studying maths

B. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language

D. you?d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language B

I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we?ve got students listening from all across America, from kindergarten to 12th grade. I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it?s your first day in a new school, so it?s understandable if you?re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you?re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could stay in bed.

I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother didn?t have the money to send me where most American kids went to study, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning. Now, as you might imagine, I wasn?t too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I?d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I complained, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she?d say, “This is no picnic for me either.” So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school.

But I?m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I?m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what?s expected of all of you in this new school year. Now, I?ve given a lot of speeches about education. And I?ve talked about responsibility a lot. I?ve talked about teachers? responsibility for encouraging students and pushing you to learn. I?ve talked about your parents? responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your

homework done. I?ve talked a lot about your government?s responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren?t working, where students aren?t getting the opportunities that they 4

deserve.

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill (履行) your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That?s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you?re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That?s the opportunity an education can provide.

Maybe you could be a great writer but you might not know it until you write that English paper. Maybe you could be an inventor but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you?ll need an education to do it. And this isn?t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. The future of America depends on you. What you?re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future. That?s why today I?m calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education and do everything you can to meet them.

4.What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

A. Mum attached importance to American education. B. The speaker didn?t go to school when he was young. C. Mum had no money to send the speaker to school. D. Mum taught the speaker all the lessons by herself. 5.From the passage, we can conclude that ______ is the most important in students? education. A. the most supportive parents B. students taking their own responsibility C. the best schools in the world D. the most dedicated teachers 6. Education is important because ______.

A. it will decide the greatest challenges students meet in the future B. it is only important for students? own life and own future

C. it provides students with opportunities to discover what they are good at D. it will have no influence on the future of America 7. What?s the main focus of the speech?

A. Responsibility students have for their education. B. The importance of education. C. Great challenges in the future. ]D. The opportunities an education can provide. C

Coaches and parents need to stop pressuring their kids in sports. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, over the past 30 years fractures(骨折) increased by 56 percent in girls and 32 percent in boys, mostly amongst kids in their pre-teens, due to overuse of the forearm. This shows that kids who get hurt always continue to play because of fear of their parents or coaches being disappointed or upset.

Parents and coaches obviously feel the need to push their children to do their best. But is that sometimes too much? A coach named Marilyn Enmark in Detroit says she recently was at an indoor game where one of her players hit the side board and was holding his head. The father, who was a former soccer player himself, ran over to the boy and yelled at him for playing poorly, rather than asking how he was feeling. A week later, his mother called him over during the game and

criticized his playing, as the boy started crying. Situations such as this one are not only happening in Detroit, but in towns and cities all over the country.

When a child gets pressured from an adult, whether it?s their parents or coaches, it can affect his or her confidence. They start feeling like they will never be good enough to satisfy their parents, and start actually believing they?re not good players. Between the ages 8 and 18, children rely on adults to tell them what?s right and wrong. But if all they?re getting is negative feedback, how do they know what they?re doing right? This can lead to fights between kids and parents, which can lead to family problems. If all parents want to talk about with their kids is the sports they?re playing, kids will just stop

listening. Older kids, usually above the age of 15, will turn to some drugs to step their game up, and satisfy their parents and coaches.

Everyone knows that if you want to get better at something, you have to practice, practice, and practice. But recently studies from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that too much training can lead to overuse injuries. Parents don?t realize when their kid?s bodies have had enough, so they keep pushing them. As a result, they continuously play even if they are hurt, and end up getting injuries that could have been prevented. In some cases, parents and coaches do in fact acknowledge their kids injuries, but then decide to do nothing about it. This is mostly because their kid is the “star player” and the team “can?t afford” to play without him or her. Children feel the need to keep playing while hurt, because they are afraid of disappointing their parents and coaches. 5

Sports are made so you can have fun, and this does not come from pressure. 8.What?s the main idea of the passage?

A. Coaches agree with the parents on how to train the good players. B. Most players worry about making their parents disappointed.

C. Coaches and parents shouldn?t continue to put too much pressure on the players. D. The team “can?t afford” to play without the players. 9.The increasing fractures mean that ______.

A. parents and coaches don?t care about children B. children are often trained with injuries C. children are eager to make achievements D. the education system needs reforming 10.If you ask too much of your child, ______.

A. your child will become less self-confident B. your child will have a bright future C. your child will feel depressed D. your child will ever rely on you

第五部分: 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,共10分)请阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。

Tests can be worrying even for the most prepared students. When some students take tests, their minds don?t work as well as usual. They may experience something called test anxiety (焦虑), which can have a negative influence on their performance. Well, the following tips can help you pass your next test more easily and achieve more success! Get Enough Sleep

6 hours of sleep or less can slow your mind and thus has negative effects on your performance on tests, even if you spend those missed hours of sleep studying. So, it?s very important for you to get a good night of sleep before your big day. Study Smarter

How do you study ?smarter?? Make a list of the things you need to learn in order of importance. That way, if you don?t have enough time, you can still hit the items at the top of the list. Make a list of all the work you have to do, judge how

much time each item will take, and compare that with the number of hours you have available; this will tell you whether you can read carefully or just skim, how much time you can spend checking papers, and tell you other ways to pace yourself so you can get everything done. If your time is still limited, it?s important to learn to let go of being perfect. Visualize (想象) Success

Before you fall asleep each night, it is a great way to visualize yourself taking the tests and doing wonderfully. Detailed visualizations can help you feel like you?re really experiencing something, and visualizing yourself doing well is a way to ?practice? success in a way that can help you perform better and feel confident. Visualizations can also help you to remember the facts. Stay Calm

Anxiety can harm your memory, so it?s important to stay calm before and during tests. While that?s easier said than done, there are several techniques that can help you calm down quickly whenever you feel nervous. For example, breathing exercise has been shown by research to reduce test anxiety, and can be very effective in helping you relax: just take deep breaths and let the anxiety come out.
