―People are ruder today because they are rushed and more ?time poor‘ than ever before,‖ says Patsy Rowe, ― Manners have fallen off the radar(雷达).‖ Due to our strong attraction to electronic equipment, it is a wonder that more people don‘t wake up each morning and gre et the singing birds with complaining about the noise. Here are some examples of rudeness.

Some people prefer to do almost everything over the Internet. To them, dealing with an actual human is like an evolutionary step backward. It feels very slow because humans don‘t work at 4G speeds. When you have dinner with friends, you will often notice someone paying more attention to his mobile phone. We have programmed ourselves to think that every new message brings life-changing news, so taking calls and checking our texts are more important than talking to the people we are with. What is worse, some people even tend to send anonymous(匿名的)rude messages by email.

However, rudeness is never acceptable. Don‘t assume it is OK to be rude if the person you‘re in touch with won‘t recognize you. If you have something awful to say, have the courage to face the person and say it, write a letter or email and sign it, or

forget it. Upsetting people with unsigned messages is cruel and disgusting.

We shouldn‘t blame technology for our shortcomings. Technology is here to help us, but we should not allow it to take over our lives. An important step is acknowledging our shortcomings. People spend a lot of time pointing out bad manners but it would be even more helpful if we‘d publi cly acknowledge good manners when we see them.

28. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

A. People can tell good from bad behavior.

B. People care little about their behavior.

C. Radar is able to observe human behavior.

D. Radar can be used to predict human behavior.

29. Some people are less willing to deal with humans because______.

A. they are becoming less patient

B. they are growing too independent

C. they have to handle many important messages

D. they have to follow an evolutionary step backward.

30. The author thinks sending unsigned awful messages is ______.

A. Ridiculous

B. acceptable

C. disgusting

D. reasonable

31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Technology can never be blamed

B. We should applaud good behavior.

C. We should keep pointing out mistakes.

D. Technology will take over lives one day.

D

A recent study, while showing a generally positive attitude toward science, also suggests a widespread worry that it may be ―running out of control‖. This idea is dangerous.

Science can be a force for evil as well as for good. Its applications can be channeled either way, depending on our decisions. The decisions we make, personally or collectively, will determine the outcomes of science. But here is a real danger. Science is advancing so fast and is so strongly influenced by businesses that we are likely to believe whatever decisions we come to will make little difference. And, rather than fighting for the best possible policies, we may step back and do nothing.

Some people go even further. They say that despite the moral and legal objections(反对), whatever is scientifically possible will be done-somewhere, sometime. They believe that science will get out of control in the end. This belief is dangerous too, because it fuels a sense of hopelessness and discourages them from

making efforts to build a safer world.

In our interconnected world, the lack of agreement in and out of the world of science can lead to the failure to control the use of science. Without a common understanding, the challenges of ―controlling‖ science in this century will be really tough. Take human cloning for example. Despite the general agreement among scientists on its possible huge impact(影响) on traditional moral values, some countries still go ahead with the research and development of its related techniques. The outcomes are hard to predict.

Therefore, discussions on how science is applied should be extended far beyond scientific societies. Only through the united efforts of people with hope, can we be fully safe against the misuse of science and can science best serve mankind in the future.

32. What can we conclude from the recent study?

A. People think highly of science.

B. Science is getting dangerously out of control.

C. People hold mixed opinions about science.

D. Science is used for both good and bad purposes.

33. According to the passage, what will happen if we hold that science is getting beyond

control?

A. The development of science will hopelessly slow down.

B. The public will lose faith in bringing about a bright future.

C. Businesses will have even greater influence on science.

D. People will work more actively to put science under control.

34. The discussion should reach beyond scientific societies because_______

A. scientists have failed to predict the outcomes

B. the ties between different areas need strengthening

C. united efforts are necessary for the development of science

D. people need to work together to prevent the bad use of science

35. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Science and its applications bring us many dangers.

B. Mankind can largely take control of science with their efforts.

C. The future of science will be influenced by the dangerous ideas.

D. The development of science mostly lies in people's attitudes.

Home on the Way

People need homes. Children assume their parents‘ place as home. Boarders call

school ―home‖ on weekdays. Married coupl es work together to build new homes and travelers have no place to call ―home‖, at least for a few nights.36? Don‘t they have the right to a home? Of course they do.

Some regular travelers take their own belongings like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them feel like home no matter where they are. Some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very familiar with service and attendants.

37.Furthermore, driving a camping car during one‘s travels and sleeping in the vehicle at night is just like home—only mobile!

And how about keeping relationships while in transit(运输中)?38. Some send letters and postcards, or even photos. Others may just call and say Hi just to let their friends know that they‘re still alive a nd well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home.39.

Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging? Whenever we step out of our lo cal boundaries, there is always another ―home‖ waiting to be found.40, we can make the place we stay ―home‖.

A. Hostels provide a clean safe place to stay while you are travelling the world

B. Others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more homely

C. Backpackers in youth hostels may become very good friends, even closer than siblings (兄

弟姐妹)

D. So how about people who have to travel for extended periods of time

E. No matter where you go in the world, hotels are there, too

F. Some keep contact with their friends via Internet

G. Wherever we are, with just a little bit of effort and imagination

书面表达:

One possible version:

Recently our city, Xi‘an, is often blanketed in heavy smog, which has brought much inconvenience to our transportation and badly affected our daily life. The heavy haze weather has caused traffic jams and even serious traffic accidents. What‘s worse, some people are suffering from symptoms related to smog, such as bad coughs, throat hurts and even lung cancers.

As citizens of our city, we students have responsibility to protect our environment. If possible, we should advise our parents and friends to take advantage of public transport instead of driving private cars. Meanwhile, planting more trees is a good way to purify the polluted air. Of course, prevention measures are vital when we are exposed to the smog weather, for example, wearing anti-smog masks to school and reducing outdoor activities. Only by raising everyone‘s environmental awareness can we have a clear blue sky!

I sincerely hope that all the students can work hand in hand to help create clean and beautiful living surroundings.
