Oxford Open Days Open day dates in 2017 The next
University-wide open days for undergraduates will be held on 28 June, 29 June and 15 September 2017. Students and parents are invited to spend a whole day in Oxford, attending events, talking to staff and students and getting answers to any questions which remain after examining prospectuses(简章)and websites. To book or not to book Unlike many other university open days, it is not necessary to book to attend an Oxford open day.
Many events are offered on a drop-in basis. What to expect on the day Many departments run their main open day events in the morning so you may choose to start with a visit to your subject department. Here you may attend a talk or sample lecture and chat to tutors and students. Over lunchtime and in the afternoon, colleges offer a range of events, tours and opportunities to meet students and tutors. This is a great time to visit those colleges on your shortlist.
Getting around There is no central campus at Oxford University, so events will happen at colleges, departments, museums and libraries all around the city. Most visitors manage this easily on foot, as all open day venues(会场) are within 15 minutes walking distance from the city center, but it is important that you plan your day in advance taking travel time into account. Many events will be very busy and latecomers will not always be able to join. Please do not try to drive between venues - there is no parking available and traffic on open days is typically extremely heavy. Disabled
visitors Anyone with a mobility impairment(损伤) may borrow a free wheelchair to travel around Oxford city center via Oxford Shop mobility. To book your wheelchair, call +44 (0) 1865 248737 at least one day in advance. 51. Who are the open days intended for ? A. Graduate students B. Undergraduates C.
Tutors D. Staff members52. On Oxford open days, which of the following is NOT mentioned? A. Attending a sample lecture in your subject
department B. Asking tutors and students for information about Oxford University C. Borrowing books from the libraries in Oxford University D. Visiting the colleges you are considering53. Which of the statements is true?A. Most open day events happen on the central campus at Oxford University. B. Disabled visitors can buy a wheelchair to travel around Oxford University. C. Visitors can attend all open day events in time just on foot. D. It's advised that visitors not drive in Oxford University on open days.

After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me. I was told it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed.
During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症).When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles(障碍)and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we had finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before: Dick,
My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can.
I told you someday that I would go to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However, I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.
Your friend,
Matthew

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its owners. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is mainly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
58. People who are unhappy _______.
A. always consider things differently from others
B. usually misunderstand what others think or say
C. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
D. usually are affected by the results of certain things
59. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “_______”.
A. make others unhappy
B. tend to scold others openly
C. have a good taste with social life
D. enjoy the pleasure of life
60. We can conclude from the passage that _______.
A. we should pity all such unhappy people
B. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
C. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons
61. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should _____.
A. prevent any communication wi th them
B. show no respect and politeness to them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
D
Etymology, the study of words and word roots, may sound like the kind of thing done by boring librarians in small, dusty rooms. Yet etymologists actually have a uniquely interesting job. They are in many ways just like archaeologists (考古学家) digging up the physical history of people and events. The special aspect of etymology is that it digs up history,
so to speak, through the words and phrases that are left behind. The English language, in particular, is a great field to explore history through words. As a language, English has
an extraordinary number of words. This is partly due to its ability to adapt foreign words
(from French), and cheetah (from Hindi) have become part of the language with little or
no change from their original sounds and spellings. So English-language etymologists have
a vast world of words to explore.Another enjoyable thing about etymology for most word experts is solving word mysteries (谜). No, etymologists do not go around solving murders,
like the great detective Sherlock Holmes. What these word experts solve are mysterious origins of some of our most common words. One of the biggest questions English language
most commonly used expressions, its exact beginning is a puzzle even to this day. Even its spelling is not completely consistent (一致)-- unless you spell it Okay, it is hard even
to call it a word.Etymologists have been able to narrow OK’s origin down to a likely, although not certain, source (来源). It became widely used around the time of Martin Van Buren’s run for president in 1840. His nickname was Old Kinderhook. What t roubles word experts about this explanation is that the phrase appeared in some newspapers before Van Buren became well known. It is likely that Van Buren could be called its primary source. Etymologists will doubtlessly keep searching for the original source. However, it is clear that OK’s popularity and reputation have topped those of the American president to whom it has been most clearly linked.62. The author mentions the words like “croissant”
in Paragraph 2 to show _______. A. words have changed a lot in the two languages B.
what English-language etymologists are exploring now C. English has brought in many words
from other foreign languages D. the English vocabulary is difficult to the
non-English-speaking people63. The underlined word “pursued” in Paragraph 4 means
_______.A. looked upon B. dug up C. put in D. set down64. We can learn from the passage that etymologists _______.A. discover the possible origin of words B. help detectives to solve mysterious murdersC. write interesting stories for some newspapersD. explore the English language as well as the recent events65. What most probably is the major purpose of the passage?A. To present the history of English words.B. To explain what an etymologist does for his job.C. To introduce the pleasure of the study of words and word roots.D. To teach readers how to tell English words from non-English words. 七选五

参考范文:
Dear Jack,
Glad to receive your e-mail where you asked about Guangpan Campaign.Actually, Guangpan Campaign,as the name sug gests, means “cle ar your plate”, which has nothing to do with music CDs. Our government launched the campaign aiming to promote the spirit of saving and stopping wasting at dinner table.
Nowadays, with people’s living standard getting better, they tend to order big meals but cannot eat up all the food eventually, only to show off their wealt h and generosity. This affects a lot of school students. They often buy some food, find it not so delicious and leave the food untouched in the plate when they finish their meals! What a terrible
waste! What a shame! As far as I am concerned, many people in some other parts of the developing countries are still going hungry for lack of food.
From my perspective, by no means can we waste a grain! So I would like to participate in the campaign and appeal to us students to order what we can finish every meal and make the plates clear!
Yours,
Li Hua
