Should Museum Entry Be Free

With International Museum Day coming up, today we are asking readers: Should museums be free or should people have to pay for a ticket? Let us know your view.

Comments:

Museums are not only there for enjoyment; they are education. This is why they must be free. While museums need a huge amount of money to operate, let the wealthy pay for it. The idea of a person or child interested in art not being able to view it because of cost is wrong.

Krista Chen (US)—Age 15 Free entry does not attract people or encourage them to appreciate art. Generally people respect things that are difficult or costly to get. Museums should require regular visitors to pay a fee, but provide free tickets as prizes for high-achieving students who can appreciate them more.

Fred Smith (New Zealand)—Age 14 Museums teach people about their past. This is part of our shared culture that should be available to everyone, rich or poor. People should never be asked to pay an entrance fee.

Rob Sanchez (Australia)—Age 17 There are no simple answers. Low ticket prices could help museums stay open. But companies and businessmen should also provide museums with more money and other support. They have a social responsibility too.

Amber White (UK)—Age 16

I think museums and art galleries should all be free to the public. I do, however, think twice a year the museums should organize money-raising events to help pay for the cost of staying open.

Li Mishao (China) —Age 15

59. Who suggests museums should regularly hold special events to collect money?

A. Krista Chen.

B. Fred Smith.

C. Rob Sanchez.

D. Li Mishao.

60. Why does Fred Smith believe that free tickets should be given to high-achieving

students?

A. Students will then study harder.

B. Museums will attract more visitors.

C. Museums can make themselves more famous.

D. These students can better appreciate museums.

61. Which of the following does Amber White agree with?

A. Businesses should offer museums more help.

B. People should only pay what they can afford.

C. Free entry doesn't encourage visitors to go to museums.

D. Everybody should have a chance to visit museums.

World's history in one place

Is it possible to put millions of years of the world's history into one building? The British Museum seems to think so.

“A History of the World in 100 Things”,an exhibition about rare and ancient things from the world, has made it a success.

The British Museum says it owns at least 8 million historical things. But why choose these 100 things to tell stories of our world's history?

It all started with a challenge(挑战).

Neil MacGregor, who was once the director of the British Museum, was asked by BBC to choose 100 things from the museum's huge collection. The things had to

include things from the beginning of human history about 2 million years ago to the present day.

MacGregor accepted, and took four years to choose each thing himself. In 2010, MacGregor appeared on BBC radio, giving a detailed(详细的) explanation of each thing. The show was a big hit and all these 100 things were shown in the British Museum. A book with photos of each thing soon followed.

“The things had to cover the whole world, from a cooking pot to a golden galleon, from a Stone Age tool to a credit card,”MacGregor wrote. The collection includes many important things from China. There is a banknote from the Ming Dynasty, showing China as the first country to use paper money.

But it's not just ancient things that are shown. Among them are some modern things like a solar-powered lamp and even a throne made of weapons created by an African artist.

“Of course, the collection could only be ‘a' history of the world. But it is still a history that people in the present world need to know. ” MacGregor wrote.

A. TV programme about Africa

B. challenge of scientific research

D. exhibition of the world's history

63. When did MacGregor give a detailed explanation of each thing on BBC radio?

A. In 2010.

B. In 2009.

C. In 2008.

64. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The things shown cover half of the world.

B. Neil MacGregor used to be a director of BB

C.

C. China was the first country to use paper money.

D. The British Museum owns 2 million historical things.

The person replied, “$3. 00 for you and $3. 00 for any kid who is older than six. We will let them in free if they are six or younger. How old are they?”

Bobby replied, “One is three and the other is seven, so I guess I owe(应给) you $6. 00. ”

三、

M:Hi,I'm Tom. I'm going to talk about my family rules.

The main rule I have to follow,I think,is to study hard at school. My parents want me to do my homework carefully and tell them about anything

important that happened at school.

I must go home after school at once. I have to go to bed by 10 p. m. on

school nights. But during the holidays,I can go to bed later at night.

Another rule is that I have to clean my room. My parents will get angry if I leave things around. I should keep my room tidy, although I often break this rule.

I think many children of my age like to have our rooms as “our places”. I try

to keep it the way I like—a bit untidy. I can have posters on the wall. But I don't think my parents would like it if I put photos of girls up.

四、

Good morning, boys and girls. Our summer camp is on July 5th. We'll take a bus to a small mountain village. The air there is fresh. We will stay with the

farmers and have many kinds of activities. In the morning, we'll learn to feed

animals like chickens, pigs and cows from the local people. In the afternoon,

we'll take a walk along the river. If you like, you can help pick fruits or

vegetables. In the evening, we'll sit under big trees and enjoy the bright moon.

What's more, we can have a party. I'm sure we'll have a great time.
