It could have been any of us, but it happened to be me. I received a brief 18-months of unpided attention and love as the only child, before three more appeared. The second was a severe blow. No doubt, learning the need to share was important, but I had tasted the life of an only child.

Then came years of requests to look after the siblings(兄弟姐妹), being urged that, You should be setting a better example, “Again and again the others got away with doing w rong but I didn't. We each played our roles; the second one who later skipped school to meet boys; the ever so attractive third, the boy who could do no wrong; and finally the surprise appearance of the fourth, seemed certain to be spoiled even now. So that left me: the reasonable, quiet one who got the grades, did the housework and became a chameleon(变色龙)—skilled at reading a situation and being what was needed.

Then eventually came the chance to be the first to leave and experience life on the outside, not defined(定义)as the eldest. The moment I had waited for. But now, many years later, being the eldest matters again. It's down to me; it seems, to take the lead in caring for our parents, AH the time I was made to learn about sharing; however, when it comes to responsibility, it no longer seems to apply. The others are too busy, too far away, or too unconcerned. So dutifully I travel many times across the country for hours to provide care and support. Requests to my siblings to help out more fall on deaf ears. To me, the dutiful first born, it feels like the right and only thing to do; to be there for our parents as they were for us. Sadly, that feeling isn't shared by the second, third or fourth.

(1)How does the author comment on the four children in the second paragraph?

A. Angrily and Bitterly.

B. Angrily and proudly.

C. Bitterly and humorously.

D. Humorously and proudly.

(2)How did the author develop his social skills?

A. Through hard work.

B. With the parents' help.

C. At the parents' request.

D. In practice for effectiveness.

(3)What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to?

A. To care for the old.

B. To help the young.

C. To live outside alone.

D. To travel nationwide.

(4)What can we learn from the text?

A. The writer hates to be the eldest.

B. The writer feels proud of his role.

C. The writer is satisfied with his attempt.

D. The writer is regretful about the siblings.

【答案】(1)C

(2)C

(3)A

(4)D

根据第二段第一句“Then came years of requests to look after the siblings (兄弟姐妹), being urged that, You should be setting a better example,” 接下来是多年来被要求照顾兄弟姐妹,被敦促树立一个好的榜样。

To me, the dutiful first born, it feels like the right and only thing to do; to be there for our parents as they were for us.

Two of the saddest words in the English language are "if only". I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying "Take the extra minute to do it right." I always try to live by the "extra minute" rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an "if only" moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.

I don't only avoid those "if only" moments when it comes to safety. It's equally important to avoid "if only" in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say "I love you" or "I forgive you." When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn't be here. But then I thought about the fact that he was 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.

I know there will still be occasions when I have to say "if only" about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I'm doing the right thing. I'm buying myself peace of mind and that's the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.(1)Which of the following is an example of the "extra minute" rule?

A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.

B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

C. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

D. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.

(2)The underlined word "foregone" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to______..

A. abandoned

B. avoided

C. lacked

D. taken

(3)The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ________.

A. join in the holiday celebration of the company

B. keep her appointment with the eye doctor

C. finish her work before the deadline approached

D. meet her father who was already an old man

(4)What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Two Saddest Words

B. The Most Useful Rule

C. The Peace of Mind

D. The Emotional Well-being

【答案】(1)C

(2)A

(3)D

(4)A

But then I thought about the fact that he's 84 years old

and I realized that I shouldn't give up an opportunity to see him.”

if only"作为线索贯穿了整篇文章,且第一段也提到了the saddest words,The Two Saddest Words适合作为标题,其他选项比较笼统,不能涵盖本文内容。故选A。

"Tomorrow is another day" — this line has impressed various people at various times. It's now 70 years after it appeared in the film, but it still seems to hold its power especially during an economic downturn.

The phrase comes from a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's successful 1936 novel Gone With the Wind. It's set in the American South and tells the story of a strong heroine, Scarlett O' Hara, who struggles to find love during the Civil War and, afterwards, of her strength in surviving the war and its hardships.

Love story

In a moment of despair, Scarlett finally realizes that her love belongs to Rhett Butler. For many audiences, it is the theme of love and struggle that has kept the movie alive. While the burning of Atlanta might seem irrelevant (不相关的) to today's viewers, the timeless theme of love keeps its ability to touch people.

With a promise to her lover still in her mind, Scarlett chooses to stay in the midst of war and take care of Melanie. But her heart is broken when Rhett just walks away, leaving the woman that he once loved with cruel words, "Frankly, dear, I don't give a damn."

Great epic (史诗)

The film shows the love-hate relationship of these characters, but also American history, the fall of the Confederacy and the following period of Reconstruction in the South. The background made this film a true classic in the epic genre.

When the film opened after World War II, French viewers loved it, and it reminded them of their fight against the Nazis. In 1940 Shanghai, during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (侵略), people stood in line for hours to watch this film, and saw the same suffering they were having as well as the hope and possibility of building a new homeland from the ruins. Each nationality could identify with the story and see it as a victory. In fact, Gone With the Wind never lost its charm and ability to inspire and amaze.

Biggest of all time

The film had five directors, 15-plus screenwriters, and an unexpected $3.9 million budget. The film brought in $200 million, which makes it the biggest selling film of all times in North America.

It also won 10 Academy awards in 1940.

Several years ago, I began asking my friends and family to tell me something about their passwords. Yes, I understand why passwords are universally hated: the pressure they put on our memory and the endless demand to update them. I hate them too. But there is more to passwords than their annoyance. In the fact that we construct them so that we can remember them, they take on secret lives.

There was a former prisoner whose password includes what used to be his prison ID number to

constantly tell him not to go back. And there was a childless 45-year-old woman whose password is the name of the baby she lost in her 25 (her way of trying to keep him alive, I guess).

Sometimes the passwords were playful. Several people said they used "incorrect" for theirs so that when they forgot it, the software automatically promoted them with the right one ("your password is incorrect").

Some passwords were striking for their uniqueness. After reading Sheryl Sandberg's book Lean in: Women, Work and the Will to Lead, Cortni Kerr, a running partner of mine, found her role model and began using "Wwssdol9", which stood for "What would Sheryl Sandberg do" plus "19" for the year (2019) of the password's creation. "TnsitTpsif" was the password of another friend, a computer scientist who loves wordplay. It stood for "The next sentence is true. The previous sentence is false". For my friend, it was a playful reference to the knots that language can tie.

The 4622 that my wife used in her passwords was not just the address of her father's childhood home but also a reminder of his strength. Apparently, when the former 120 kg football standout was a small boy, he had to sing his home address (4622 South 28th West Avenue) in one full breath rather than try to say it normally. Otherwise, his stutter (口吃) would embarrass him.(1)Why did the prisoner use his prison ID number in his password?

A.To rebuild his reputation.

B.To remind him to act legally.

C.To fight against his poor memory.

D.To hide the unpleasant experience.

(2)What did Cortni Kerr think of Sheryl Sandberg's book?

A.Doubtful.

B.Interesting.

C.Creative.

D.Inspiring.

(3)What might be the best title for the text?

A.The reasons why people hate passwords.

B.The unusual passwords.

C.The secret lives of passwords.

D.The best ways to make your passwords unique.

【答案】(1)B

(2)D

(3)C

Research finds out why some people are constantly under attack from the bloodsucking insects while others walk free.

For those unfortunate enough to feature highly on the mosquito hit list, summer nights can be synonymous with mosquito bites. Yet others hardly ever get bitten. So how do the bloodthirsty insects select their victims?

The insects' tastes may seem arbitrary. However, research shows that when mosquitoes make their choices between potential victims, it all comes down to scent (气味).

“Mosquitoes are attracted by carbon dioxide and heat, which everyone gives off. But mosquitoes are also attracted by certain scent s,” says Karl-Martin Vagn Jensen, the head of research at the Department of Agricultural Science at Arhus University.

According to Jensen, it has not yet been confirmed exactly what the scents in question are. But research does indicate that some scents are more attractive to mosquitoes than others.

“All the lab employees rubbed petri dishes (培养皿) against their stomachs. In that way, their scents were put on the dishes, which were then put in a container full of mosquitoes,” he says. “The mosquitoes repeatedly landed on some of the petri dishes, b ut didn't go anywhere near the others.”

Perhaps taking inspiration from popular fiction, there are also those who consider garlic as an excellent repellent (驱虫剂) against the winged bloodsuckers. According to the researcher, this strategy may not be ent irely fruitless. “As far as I know, there is no scientific proof that eating garlic works. But there may be something to the theory that it's possible to mask scent with garlic,” he says. The only reliable method of protection against mosquitoes is to use repellents that are sold over the counter. It contains some smells that can confuse the mosquitoes. When the mosquito comes closer, it uses smell, heat and carbon dioxide to decide whether to bite. But if it is confused by a repellent, it will never get that far.

(1)Which of the following can best replace the phrase underlined in Paragraph 2?

A. Be equal to.

B. Be accessible to.

C. Be harmful to.

D. Be beneficial to.

(2)What can we infer about the scents attracting mosquitoes?

A. Mosquitoes can be attracted by various scents.

B. Some kinds of scents appeal to mosquitoes in particular.

C. The lab employees use petri dishes to deposit their scents.

D. Mosquitoes are arbitrary when it comes to different scents.

(3)What is the main idea of the last Paragraph?

A. A new strategy is used in researching repellents.

B. Garlic is considered to be an excellent repellent.

C. Using repellents is an effective way against mosquitoes.

D. The inspiration against mosquitoes is from popular fiction.

(4)Where is the text most probably taken from?

A. Science fiction.

Mrs. Jones was my first patient when I started medical school—and I owe her a lot.

She was under my care for the first two years of my medical training, yet I knew very little about her, except that she was thin, perhaps in her mid 70s. It might seem rather negligent not to know the basic facts of my patient ,but I had a valid reason—Mrs. Jones was dead, and had been dead for about three years before I made a patient of her. Mrs. Jones was the dead body that I dissected(解剖)over the first two years of my medical training.

Of course, her name wasn't really Mrs. Jones, but it seemed a little impolite to be conducting research into someone's body without even knowing its name, so out of courtesy, I thought she should have one. “Me and Mrs. Jones, we've got a thing going on,” went the song coming out of the radio as I unzipped the bag of her on my first day — and so she was christened.

As the months passed, I soon forgot that Mrs. Jones had, in fact, once been alive. One day, though, she suddenly became very human again. I'd been dissecting Mrs. Jones a good 18 months before I got around to the uterus(子宫). After I'd removed it, the professor came up to me, “If you lo ok at the opening carefully, you'll see that the angle indicates that this woman has had several children, probably three.” I stared at it, and I suddenly felt very strange. This woman, who had given me something incredibly precious that I'd begun to take for granted, wasn't a dead body. She was a person, a mother, in fact.

At my graduation, the same professor came over to congratulate me. I explained the story about Mrs. Jones to him, and recalled what he'd told me about her having children and how that had affected me all those years ago.

“Well,” he said, “at the beginning of your training you had a dead body and managed to turn it into a person. Now you're a doctor, the trick is to have a person and not turn them into a dead body,” and he laughed, shook my hand and walked away.

(1)Why didn't the author know much about Mrs. Jones?

A. Because he was irresponsible for his patients.

B. Because he wasn't allowed to ask for her privacy.

C. Because he didn't know her until she passed away.

D. Because he was too careless while dissecting her.

(2)How did Mrs. Jones get her name?

A. It was passed down from the seniors of my school.

B. It came from a song being played when we first met.

C. She was named after a well-known singer I liked best

D. It just occurred to me when I opened the bag of her.

(3)What could be the author's feeling for Mrs. Jones now?

A. Grateful.

B. Pitiless.

C. Hateful.

D. Guilty.

(4)What did the professor imply by his words in the last paragraph?

A. Medical students are able to bring the dead back to life.

B. Being a doctor has nothing to do with the medical training.

C. Good doctors never fail to save their patients from dying.

D. Medical staff ought to have respect for life and humanity.

【答案】(1)C

(2)B

(3)A

(4)D

Taking on the task of producing a short movie might seem like an impossible feat, but if you can assemble a good team and if you break down each stage of production into small blocks of

tasks, you'll come to realize that producing a small-scale movie isn't too bad. Just follow these steps and you'll be on your way to Kevin Smith-like fame in no time.

Assemble a production crew. If you run out of friends or people you can get to work for screen credit, offer people “points”, which is a percentage of the movie profits.

Get a director of photography. You need someone who knows a lot about films cameras to make the movie come out right. Local film schools are the best place to find them.

If you're a book lover, you have a pile of books on your bedside,or a bookshelf in your library with a“to read”sign on it.Yet you can't stop yourself from adding to the pile. This can lead to feelings of guilt over your new purchases. But I'm here to tell you to stop worrying.

What you have is an antilibrary , and it's a very good thing. The term comes from writer Umberto Eco.He is the owner of a large personal library. He separates visitors into two groups:those who react with“Wow! What a library you have! How many of these books have you read?”and the others who get the point that a private library is not something to show off but a research too1.Read books are far less valuable than unread ones.Indeed, the more you know, the larger the rows of unread books.Let us call this collection an antilibrary.

If you think you already know everything about a subject, you're cutting yourself off from a stream of information at an artificial point. So a growing library of books you haven't read means you're consistently curious about the unknown. And that attitude is a great foundation for a lifelong love of 1earning.

So don't feel guilt over your unread books. Those books will be there for you when you do want them, and as you build your library of read and unread books, you can start using it as you would use a bigger library.Certain books may become references more than read-throughs.Or you may find that a book you bought five years ago has special relevance today.Letting the role of books evolve in your life is a healthy sign of curiosity. That's good for you and good for the world around you.

(1)What does the underlined word“antilibrary”in Paragraph 2 refer to?

D. your strong desire about new information (3)What's the author's attitude towards having an antilibrary?

A. Favorable.

B. Doubtful.

C. Ambiguous.

D. Contradictory.(4)What can we know from the last paragraph?

D. We should read through every book.

Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.

Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life.

But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.

He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.

In February 1934, in New York City's Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run-this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.

A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one's self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one, to the degree that death seemed the preferable option.
