"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever things weren't going my way.
"Don't worry, one day your luck will change." Mother was right, as I discovered after I had finished my college education. I had decided to try for a job in radio. One day, I wanted to host(主持)a sports program. I went to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station. But I got turned down every time.
In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn't got enough experience. "Get some work with a small station and work your way up," she said.
I went back home. I couldn't get a job there, either. Then my dad told me a businessman had opened a store and needed someone to help him. But again, I didn't get the job.
I felt really down. "Your luck will change," mom said to me. Dad lent me the car to help me to look for my job.
I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner, a nice man, told me he had already had someone.
As I left his office, I asked, "How can someone be a sports announcer(播音员)if he can't get a job in a radio station?"
I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man call. "What did you mean? Do you know anything about football?" He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game, I succeeded.
On my way home, mom's words came back to me, "One day your luck will change, son.
And when it happens, it'll feel doubly(加倍的)good because of all the hard work you've had." At that moment I knew what just she meant.

It was July 17th of 2017. The little helpless girl, who had trouble walking, was going out into the wide world. In June 2016, I got the idea that I was going to America as an exchange student. With tears in my eyes, I said goodbye to my family.
After I finally arrived at the airport in Burlington, Vermont. I was welcomed by my host family. They didn't know much about my disability. “I hobble a little, but I don't see it as a problem.” I think it's th e will that decides what you can and cannot do, and the disability doesn't matter!
Before I went to the US, I knew I was going to miss home. But I went! Why? I've been a fighter ever since I decided not to give up my breath when I was born! My mother wrote my host mom an e-mail and told her about my hard birth so they would understand. I remember clearly after she finished reading it, she came into the room, gave me a big hug and said, “You are a fighter.” My host family supported me so much during the year.
In school, small notes were sent out to all my teachers, by e-mail, to tell them about my disability. Everything worked greatly.
By the end of my year, exchange students were asked to talk about our years. I spoke in front of about 100 people! I was extremely proud of my “speech”. The following day some teachers stopped me and said, “Your speech was the best one.”

“Okay, I'll treat you.” the owner said. A few minutes later, the owner brought her a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some bites, Sue cried.

I was in the fifth grade and about to take a Maths test. In the first grade I had always been good at school, and simple Maths was easy for me and I always did well on tests. When it came to the fifth grade Maths, I couldn't understand it no matter how hard I tried. Mom and Dad had always been so proud of my good grades and I didn’t want to let them down. Just before the test, I had written several of the answers on my desk. I sat
nervously as the teacher started to hand out the test papers. I didn’t want to get caught, but I didn't want to fail the exam either. .
As the teacher was walking around me, suddenly the fire alarm went off. It was an unscheduled fire drill We all rushed to the playground and stood together. As I stood in the warm sunshine, I realized what a fool I had been. I knew my mom and dad would be proud of me and love me no matter what my grades were. As soon as we were allowed to go back to the classroom, I walked to my desk and wiped (擦) the answers away. I had been given a second chance and I wasn’t going to waste it. I took the test, did my best, and felt at peace. I don’t remember what my grade was but that day has stayed in my heart and mind ever since.
I am not sure why God gave me a second chance that day. Life is foil of second chances, but you have to be willing to take them. You have to be willing to correct your mistakes. You have to be willing to follow your heart. Every day when you wake up, you are given a second chance in life.

(2)Why did the writer write the answers on the desk?
A. Because his teacher asked him to do so.
B. Because his parents asked him to do so.
C. Because he wanted others to copy him.
D. Because he didn’t want to fail the test.
(3)When the writer was standing outside, he thought of the following things EXCEPT
A. his teacher must catch him cheating
B. it was wrong for him to cheat in the exam
C. his parents would still love him even when he got bad grades
D. he shouldn’t write anything on the desk
(4)What's the best title for the passage?
A. A strict Maths teacher
B. An interesting test
C. Being caught in a test
D. A second chance
【答案】(1)B
(2)D
(3)A
(4)D
In the first grade I had always been good at school, and simple Maths was easy for me and I always did well on tests. When it came to the fifth grade Maths, I couldn't understand it no matter how hard I tried.
Mom and Dad had always been so pro ud of my good grades and I didn’t want to let them down.
As I stood in the warm sunshine, I realized what a fool I had been. I knew my mom and dad would be proud of me and love me no matter what my grades were. 故选A。
Every day when you wake up, you are given a second chance in life. 可知。故选D。
Dear Dr. Manners,
My close friend seldom says "please". She will say "Can you get me that bag?" or" Move it over there!" I have told her a lot of times that it is polite to use "please" and "thank you", but she hardly remembers. I feel that she is ordering me around without "please", and I always get angry.
We have been close friends for over 10 years. It seems that I can't stand it any more. What should I do? Can you help me?
Sincerely,
Hawkins Dear Ms Hawkins,
When your friend docs not use polite words, it seems that she is ordering you to do something. So you have right(权利) to hate her behavior.
Ask her why she doesn't use "please" or "thank you". Explain to her that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Also, you don't need to do anything for her because she doesn't seem kind or pleasant when she asks you to.
Maybe your friend was not taught how to use "please" or "thank you" in the normal conversation. So you can try to teach her that. Remember it is difficult to find another close friend if you lose one.
Best regards,
Dr. Manners (1)Ms Hawkins doesn't know how to use "please" or "thank you".
(2)Ms Hawkins got to know her friend more than ten years ago.
