W: Mike, did your mom ever sing you to sleep when you were a little boy?

M: I can’t remember, but I’m sure she must have. Did your parents sing you to sleep? W: Oh yeah. They both did. M: What songs did they sing?

W: I think actually my favorite was … Oh, what’s that one by James Taylor? “Rock-a-bye Sweet Baby James …” That was my favorite. M: Oh. Did your dad sing that?

W: No, no. My dad liked to sing another song “The bird is the word and the word is the bird …” He sang that song all the time when I was little. M: That made you fall asleep?

W: No. He made me laugh. But that’s how my dad sang it.

M: Oh, I see. The only songs that I can remember were by Linda Rondstat and the Rolling Stones. I used to fall asleep with my head on the speaker listening to the Rolling Stones. W: Oh, that must be good for your early development.

M: Oh, we aren’t looking for one to buy. We don’t have enough money yet. We just want to find a flat to rent.

M: Really? Perhaps I’ll talk to my parents before we decide on a flat.

W: That’s not a bad idea. My family gave us quite a lot of helpful advice. Now, what about a coffee? There’s a good place just round the corner.

听第四段独白,回答第10~12题。

10. What does the speaker think of the town? A. It’s too crowded.

B. It is developing too quickly. C. It changes little these years.

11. What happened to the speaker’s car one night? A. The back window was smashed. B. The lights were damaged. C. It ran out of petrol.

12. What’s the speaker’s attitude towards the situation in the town? A. Worried. B. Satisfied. C. Hopeful. Text 4

It seems as if the town I call my home has turned into a frightening city. I am all for the activities for entertainment, but if our town cannot control what has happened after these activities, do away with them all. Three years ago I used to watch movies in the park and it was wonderful. But now all these teenagers have taken it over. Now it’s full of fights, drug abuse and many other types of unacceptable behavior.

Last night I got up to go to work but I found the back window of my car was smashed. I suddenly thought of two of my good friends, whose car lights were damaged on a Thursday night. Please give back our small town. Development is great and I am all for it. But if you can’t control it, slow it down. Our Main Street Council or whatever you want to call them needs to look at the bigger picture. People who have lived here for decades are disgusted with the lack of care from people in charge. I love my town. Please allow it to develop at its own pace. Don’t turn it into another Bakersfield. Eventually that will happen if this continues. Bakersfield:美国六大空气质量最糟糕城市之一。 听第五段对话,回答第13~15题。

15. What does the woman think of the man’s part-time job? A. It is inconvenient. B. It is boring.

C. It is difficult. Text 5

W: Jack, I know you are working part-time at the moment. Can you tell me about it? I need a part-time job, too.

M: I work for the City Bank, but I work at home using my computer. I have to answer customers’ questions. The bank has customers from all over the United States, Europe and China. W: Wow! That sounds great. Do your customers speak to you on their computers, too?

M: Sometimes. Some have computers and we can speak from computer to computer, but others use regular telephones or cellphones. I can still speak to them using my computer only, though. W: They call you at your computer using their cellphones? Don’t they need a computer as well? M: No, they don’t if they have a telephone, a high-end cellphone or a black berry. The black berry has all the features of a computer. It supports e-mails, cellphones, text-messaging, Internet faxing, web-browsing and other wireless information services. It is like a wireless computer. As it is very small, you can even hold it in your hand. W: A hand-held computer can do all that?

M: Yes. Computers have become smaller and smaller, yet more powerful these days.

W: I’ve learned something new today, but I can’t take on a job like yours. I am afraid it is beyond me.

M: Perhaps you can. It’s all up to you. Why not give it a try? The good news is that computer technology is becoming increasingly user-friendly nowadays. If you put your mind to it, it won’t take you long to master it.

Here are some suggestions for taking care of yourself. 1. Learn to air your feelings.

Share your sorrows and disappointments with someone you trust. Form a small group of people you can call on for emotional support. Agree to “be there” for each other. Offer advice only when it is asked for. Listen without interrupting. Practice being a positive and encouraging person. Each time you give others a word of encouragement, not only will they feel better, but you will become more confident. 2. Learn to relax.

Remind yourself that you deserve time on your own to play. You can find books, tapes, programs, classes, instructors and other materials to teach you how to relax. For example, you should go for a walk or ride a bike to add exercise to your daily life. Relaxation improves your mind and can help you feel much better without stress or tension. 3. Change jobs if you are miserable at work.

First, try to figure out if the job is right for you or if certain people are causing you to feel miserable at work. Try paying more attention to the things you enjoy about your job and less attention to the things that annoy you. Remember that all jobs have unpleasant aspects. 4. Pay attention to your spiritual life.

Slow down. Practice sitting quietly. Listen to your inner voice. Spend time thinking about the things that bring peace and beauty to your life. Find the courage to follow your own spiritual path if an organized religion has not been helpful for you.
