1855年初演于巴黎。法国剧作家斯克里布(1791—1861)撰脚本：十三世纪，西西里在法国统治下。志士阿里戈和普罗奇达共谋推翻法国统治。贵妇埃莱娜之兄为法国总督蒙福特所杀。埃莱姗愿下嫁阿里戈，但求阿里戈为其兄报仇。阿里戈谋刺蒙福特，事败被捕。阿里戈实为蒙福特之子，后父子相认。埃莱娜与普罗奇达继续合谋行刺，亦遭逮捕。阿里戈为两人向其父求情。蒙福特同意其子与埃莱娜结婚。西西里民众准备于婚礼之日起事。埃莱娜知事危急，要求推迟婚期。蒙福特不允。婚礼的钟声响起，民众爆发起义，蒙福特一伙统治者皆死于西西里志士之手。
