1. Teaching content

2. Teaching aims

a. To expand vocabulary, phrases and other expressions;

b. To improve speaking skills and creativity among students by way of impromptu speech and storytelling;

c. To enhance culture awareness among students.

3. Key points

a. Expand vocabulary(harvest, strange, comedy, trust, cliff, souvenir, prepare, bump, asleep, subtitle, celebration, firefly, cactus, vase…).

b. Learn phrases and expressions (instead of; make fun of; in fact; for the first time; take a bath; hold on; fit in; pull your socks up; be popular with/ among; be likely to do; tell the truth…).

c. Improve students’ speaking skills by answering impromptu questions and creating stories.

d. Enhance culture awareness by introducing foreign entertainment, festivals and animals.

4. Teaching procedures

1. a. Video share. The teacher shares stories of pirate culture and treasure hunt in support of videos and reading materials.

b. Brainstorm. The teacher gives a picture of a ghost shop floating above the sea. Students brainstorm and answer questions like “what is in the ship?” “What happens to it?” “Why does it float in the air?”

c. Scene simulation. “I am captain Pegleg. I also have a ship. But it is a ghost ship. I am hunting treasure in School Hill where Ernie and Jade studies in. Please allow me to tell my exciting story!”

2. The class tells the story through the eyes of Captain Pegleg.

a. Scene simulation. The teacher narrates “My ghost ship floats to the school, but unluckily was seen by Mrs Wiggins, the caretaker, and a little boy named Ernie. I have never expected anyone could see me! They are obviously more surprised than me. Everything is shown on their face.”

Check words of “saying”. In order to review words of gasp, shout, stutter, sign and warn, the teacher provides a sentence said by Ernie or Mr Wiggins, like “I sp-sp-spoke to a ghost!” Ernie____. The students are then asked to imitate the sentences by reading after the tape.

Scene simulation. The teacher narrates “Ernie is so surprised to find my ship and me. He cannot help telling the truth to his classmates. But how could anyone believe him? ” The students fill in blanks of the summary in Chapter 2. Role play. The students are asked to form a group of three, acting as Ernie, Louie and Jade. Actors’ lines are shown on PPT when each group gives the role play. Scene simulation. The teacher narrates “I (Captain Pegleg) am glad that the two kids want to help me out. But things cannot always go so smoothly. Many obstacles lie in front of them. I do hope they can succeed at last”. Writing skills (suspense) analysis. The teacher gives a curve showing three bathos and apexes of the treasure hunt. They represent difficulty to find metal detector, difficulty to figure out the location of treasure island, and at last difficulty to detect the treasure. Students are given pictures, as hints, to describe each pair of bathos and apex. My favorite sentence. “Somewhere else, somewhere far away, a ghost seagull cried. But nobody heard it, except Ernie and Jade and Mrs Wiggins.” The students are encouraged to share their favourite sentences. Creative thinking. Why could only Ernie, Jade and Mrs Wiggins see the ghost ship? What do they have in common? Character analysis of Ernie, Jade and Captain. The students share their opinions of Ernie and Jade though the eyes of Captain Pegleg. They then have comments on captain Pegleg. Group discussion. Students tell the pre-stories and follow-ups of Captain Pegleg.
