Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题; 每小题2分,满分30分)

Often people use laptops (笔记本电脑) on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms. Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110?year?old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. Besides, they will be able to use e?mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast?food restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable (可行的). As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. Also, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. Driving to a friend's house on a recent evening, I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above

my friend's rooftops.I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it was that most city people, myself included, usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors.

My friend had also seen it.He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him.It had touched much of his life.

I know the feeling.Last December I took my seven?year?old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. We stayed in a forest rest house with no electricity or running hot water. Our group had campfires outside every night, and indoors when it was too cold outside. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip.Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known, a bottomless well of silence. And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.

Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fibreglass. We have televisions, cell phones, electricity, heaters, ovens, air?conditioners, cars, and computers.

Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors, I thought: before long, I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables, read books, walk in the mountains, and perhaps write, but not in anger.I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a silent night and touch the moon. 5.The best title for the passage would be ________. C.advise modern people to learn to live

D.want to express his longing for modern life C

Youth volunteers from Beijing University visited Songtang Hospital, a care clinic for the aged and dying patients, during the second Global Youth Service Day on April 21.

Thirty student volunteers from the university's School of International Studies sat at the beds of the patients in their specially?decorated “care huts”. They talked with them and gave massages to patients kept in their beds.

“I felt sorry that I could not offer more to these people than talking with them and trying to cheer them up.” said Deng Yetao, 20, a third?year student. “But it occurred to me that they need more care and love than babies. They are afraid of the coming death. Their loneliness is worse than physical pains.”

“Even though they are suffering a lot, the majority of the elderly people want to talk to us. Each of them has a lot of life experiences and philosophies to share. Instead_of_doing_them_a_favor,_I_felt_I_was_gaining_a_valuable_lesson,” said Mao Xiahua, another third?year student.

Mao talked with two elderly patients for a whole afternoon. The fact that most of the patients in the 80?room clinic are aged people with diseases which will lead to death soon made the volunteers' hearts heavy. Ninety?one percent of the patients will spend the last days of their lives in the clinic, according to a survey by the hospital.

Daily visits and services by social workers and youth volunteers are a very important part of their programmer. A total of 330,000 Beijing students from 119 universities and colleges have visited the hospital. Many continue to offer services in their spare time. Some of them volunteer to hold the hands of dying patients during the last minutes of their lives.

A tour of the two cities is the perfect way to experience everything from 17th century's Habsburg dynasty splendor to sci?fi restaurants.

Vienna is famous for Mozart and imperial palaces. You can appreciate the perfect blending of architecture and nature in the grand Schonbrunn Palace, and reward yourself with a cup of Vienna coffee, which has made its way to the world's cultural heritage list.

There is no doubt that we have benefited a lot from the Internet in our everyday life.We can read news, watch films, keep in touch with our relatives, make friends, or play games to get relaxed on the Internet.

But every coin has two sides. The Internet also has bad effects on people, especially on teenagers.Things such as violence and cheating, often appear on the Internet seriously polluting their hearts and soul.Consequently, children will gradually lose interest in their studies.

Now, it's high time the government took effective measures. Some websites that disobey the rules should be made public and closed up.As students, we should protect ourselves by keeping on guard against the bad effect of the Internet.I'm sure we will have a better online environment soon so that the Internet can serve us better.

For many old persons, just walking across a room can consume them of all their energy for the day. In hot weather, they may not even make them out of bed. Learning to conserve energy is not a complicated process, yet it can make a world of difference.

Learning to perform tasks efficiently and to minimize energy expense requires mental organization. Before an elderly person gets up and does something, she needs to stop and think about what else she can do at the same time.

For example, getting dressed in the morning could require several trips to the closet. She should stop and think about all the things she needs to gather from the closet. She should gather them all at once instead of getting clothes out, putting them on, then going and getting a belt and looking for shoes. Going in and out of the closet several times requires a lot of activities and energy: gathering all of the items at one time and dressing in order can take a few simpler steps.

Grooming (梳洗) can be scattered by first brushing her teeth, then getting dressed, then going back to the bathroom and washing her face and combing her hair. They should perform all tasks in one location and then move on to the next area and tasks. Make sure they take a break and rest between tasks. When cooking, they should gather supplies at one time, perform the work, and then put away what is no longer needed. They should cook the food, sit down to eat, and then clear up.

There are many other aspects of energy conservation, including breathing techniques and rest and relaxation tips. Rearranging space such as kitchen?chained contents and household furniture can be helpful in making energy conservation work more efficiently.

9.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Advice on how to conserve energy for the old people. B.Tips on what to do with the elderly.

C.Help to be done for the old people. D.Daily affairs happening to the elderly.

10.What is the function of the third paragraph? A.To show how hard an elderly person works. B.To prove mental organization is effective. C.To imply elderly persons need timely help. D.To prove we are into an aged society now.

11.When an elderly person is doing her grooming, she should ________. A.perform all the tasks in a hurry B.leave out some of the activities C.finish all the tasks in one place D.groom while making a meal

12.The passage is probably taken from ________. A.Journal of Environment and Health B.Family Care and Life Magazine C.Sports and Environment Magazine D.Interview and News Report

I have never been a fan of musicals. However, I love history, and when I saw the ads for South Pacific, a World War Ⅱ?set musical playing at the Ahmanson Theater, I told myself I had to go.It was my first live musical or play, and I didn't know what to expect. The stage sets, costumes and dances were wonderful. The music was equally amazing.I almost forgot that everything was performed by an orchestra, and sung live. But more importantly, it was the story that kept me sitting there watching the three?hour performance.

The play takes place on an island in the Pacific Ocean. The main story is about a romance between Emile (Rod Gilfry), a Frenchman who fled France because of something he had done, and Nellie (Carmen Cusack), a young nurse from Arkansas. There's also the American Marine Lt.Cable (Anderson Davis), who develops a relationship with a native Tonkinese girl named Liat (Sumie Maeda).

I liked a lot of things about the play.My favorite performer was Anderson Davis because he had the best voice and he successfully showed the damaged character of Lt.Cable.I loved the song I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair performed by Nellie and the cast of nurses because the lyrics were funny, “If you laugh at different comics/If you root for different teams/Waste no time, weep no more/Show him what the door is for.” I also liked that the production did a good job in making sure that the historical events were showed correctly. I would surely recommend South Pacific to everyone, especially people who like a mix of humor, controversial (有争议的) issues, love stories and war history.
