二、阅读理解、完形填空题(共5道小题)

41.

Advertising is a form of selling. It makes you want to buy a product or a service. In order to attract your interest it uses various approaches. One is the emotional approach. For example, consider an advertisement for a blanket. It is beautifully printed in full color. It shows a young woman looking dreamily at a pretty blanket. “To you a blanket is more than a source of warmth,” it says. “You need beauty as well as a good night’s sleep.”

Looking at the advertisement, you may feel flattered. You may feel yourself different from those who buy blankets simply for warmth. And so you may want to have one yourself. In the same way, a man may buy a certain make of car just because he wants to impress his friends. This seems ridiculous, of course, since people buy a car as a means of transportation. But there are many people who secretly feel that a certain car will give them prestige. To realize this, you have only to look at TV commercials in which nice-looking cars are shown together with people everyone admires.

On the contrary, when a man buys a delivery truck for his business that is not the case. Here he will not try to seem important as he may when he buys a luxury car. What he has in mind is a truck that will do its job efficiently. Similarly, a woman buying a refrigerator will not be led by her emotions so easily. She wants to know such facts as how much food it can hold and whether the food is easy to reach. In such cases, advertising is generally straightforward. It gives you the facts about a product rather than an idea. Generally, advertisements use either the emotional or the rational approach, or a combination of the two.

Advertising reflects our way of living. This is one reason why an American university has recently set up a place storing historical records for TV commercials that have been used in

the past. They will be useful in learning why people really behaved, thought, and acted as they did in the days when these commercials appeared on TV. [共5题] (1) What does advertising sell? [本题2分] 正确答案:A

(A) A product or a service. (B) Emotion or ration (C) Facts or ideas. (D) Impression or prestige. (2) What will you feel when looking at the advertisement at which a beauty is looking dreamily? [本题2分] 正确答案:C

(A) My parents always make me do my homework before I go out. (B) With blood pouring from his leg, he made it to a nearby house. (C) It’s one of the most popular makes of satellite phone on the market. (D) None of the above.

(4) Which of the following commodities should use the emotional approach in advertising according to the passage? [本题2分] 正确答案:B

(A) delivery truck (B) car (C) refrigerator (D) washing machine

(5) According to the passage, which of the following statement is NOT true? [本题2分] (A) Advertising can help us to know how people live in the past. 正确答案:C (B) The emotional approach focuses on the customers’ feelings while the rational approach concentrates on the products’ functions

5

(C) What you buy should make others think highly of you.

(D) To some degree, TV commercials can help people make decisions.

A few years ago I was shopping with a friend and his 12-year-old daughter in downtown San Francisco. A street musician, whom my friend happened to know from his own musician days, was playing the saxophone (萨克斯管) on a street corner. His name was Clifford, and he had attracted a large crowd with his performance. After he finished, my friend introduced him to me and his daughter. Clifford asked her if she played any instrument. When she replied that she was taking trumpet (小号) lessons and played in her junior high school band, he said, “That is fine, little lady. Learn your instrument well and you can play anything.”

Somehow these simple yet wise words struck me as appropriate not only for a trumpet player but also for a reader. If you learn to read well, you can read anything you want—not just newspapers and magazines, but more difficult material like philosophy, file criticism, military history—whatever interests you as your confidence grows. You would not be limited in any way. If you have the vocabulary—or at least a good dictionary near at hand—you can pick up a book, concentrate on it, and make sense of the author's words.

In the United States, reading instruction often ends at elementary school, so students sometimes have difficulty as they progress through school. They must take their assignments armed only with their elementary school reading skills. The result, too often, is frustration and loss of confidence. And the assigned reading in your college courses will be even greater than they were in high school. Developing Reading Skills is designed to accomplish several tasks to show you the skills that will enable you to read with greater comprehension, to help you co

pe with reading assignments with confidence, and to teach you to become an active reader. [共5题]

Advertisements make us want too much, so we get the idea that the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. But it is not completely right. Advertisement has another equally important function—to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washer, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.

Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall or a newspaper full of bad news.

We must not forget that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast pro grams is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!

Another thing we mustn’t forget is the ‘small ads.’ in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job; buy or sell a house; announce a birth, marriage, or death in these small ads. [共5题]

Many visitors finds the fast pace at which American people move very troubling. One’s first impression is likely to be that everyone is in a rush. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going and are very impatient if they are delayed even for a brief moment.

At first, this may seem unfriendly to you. Drivers will rush you; storekeepers will be in a hurry as they serve you; people will push past you as they walk along the street. You will miss smiles, brief conversations with people as you shop or dine away from home. Do not think that because Americans are in such a hurry they are unfriendly. Often, life is much slower outside the big cities, as is true in other countries as well.

Americans who live in cities such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, often think that everyone is equally in a hurry to get things done; they expect others to “push back”, just as city people do in Tokyo, Singapore or Paris, for example. But when they discover that you are a stranger, most Americans become quite kindly and will take great care to help you. Many of them first came to the city as strangers and they remember how frightening a new city can be .If you need help or want to ask a question, choose a friendly looking person and say, “I am a stranger here. Can you help me?” Most people will stop, smile at you, and help you find you way or answer your questions. But you must let them know that you need help. Otherwise they are likely to pass you by, not noticing that you are new to the city and in need of help. Occasionally, you may find someone too busy or perhaps too rushed to give you aid. If this happens, do not be discouraged; just ask someone else. Most Americans enjoy helping a stranger. [共5题]
