The book ?Jane Eyre? ranks as one of the world greatest and most perennially popular works of English fiction. I have read it when I was a middle school student. The whole story was fascinating and when I read it, I was totally absorbed in it. Last year, when I was a freshman in the college, I read its English original edition. Though it is still a little difficult to me, I could get its general meaning at some means. Jane impressed me deeply. Though she didn?t have pretty appearance, the character of her was as precious as gold. She was totally different from the woman at that time.
The Victorian Age was men-centered and men-controlled times. Women were discriminated against by men at that time. However, the ahead-of-age female consciousness of Jane Eyre, the main character of Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte, challenged men?s authority. In this novel of the Victorian Age, Charlotte exposed and denounced men?s oppression of and discrimination against women. On the other hand, Charlotte is remarkable in portraying Jane Eyre as a self-respecting and rebellious girl, desiring equality. These remarkable qualities make Jane as the most famous heroine in the novels. There are many beautiful sentences and phrases in the book. I will write some impressed me most.
?Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are!?
There are some similar phrases in the movie ?Jane Eyre?
.
Jane: Why do you confide in me like this? What are you and she to me? You think that because I'm poor and plain, I have no feelings? I promise you, if God had gifted me with wealth and beauty, I would make it as hard for you to leave me now as it is for me to leave you. But He did not. But my spirit can address yours, as if both have passed through the grave and stood before heaven equal.
Perhaps this is the most famous paragraph in the book. When I was in the high school, my English teacher who liked this paragraph very much always used it as an example when he taught us the subjunctive mood. In my opinion, Jane Eyre is very much the story of a quest to be loved. Jane searches, not just for romantic love, but also for a sense of being valued, of belonging. Jane possesses a sense of her self-worth and dignity, a commitment to justice and principle, a trust in god, and a passionate disposition.
Her fear of losing her autonomy motivates her refusal of Rochester?s marriage proposal. Jane believes that ?marrying? Rochester while he remains legally tied to Bertha would mean rendering herself a mistress and sacrificing her own integrity for the sake of emotional gratification.
Though Jane is very independent, she still loves Rochester deeply in her heart. From these paragraphs below we can find that how deeply she loves him.
I had not intended to love him; the reader knows I had wrought hard to extirpate from my soul the germs of love there detected; and now, at the first renewed view of him, they spontaneously arrived, green and strong! He made me love him without looking at me.
What if something had happened to you? What if I couldn?t get to you? What would I have done without you?
You?re my family. You?re all I?ve got.
I miss him, love him, hazing, indelible, is not the sun, dispel the sand storms blow can build a statue. This is the name on the inscription engraved like marble, axel, wherever I go, my heart is toward him, longing to him and bless him. At every step, Moore, suddenly the hut, I'm sure he decides to, now in the marsh, every night when walks into the bedroom, often be missing the tides, tears will also went down silently.
Feeling …clamored wildly. ?Oh, comply!? it said. ?…soothe him; save him; love him; tell him you love him and will be this. Who in the world cares for you? Or who will be injured by what you do??
No woman was ever nearer to her mate than I am: ever more absolutely bone of his bone, fresh of his fresh. I know no weariness of my Edward?s society: he knows none of mine, any more than we each do of the pulsation of the heart that beats in our separate bosoms; consequently, we are ever together.
At the end of the story, Jane writes that she has been married for 10 blissful years and that she and Rochester enjoy perfect equality in their life together. She says that after 2 years of blindness, Rochester regained sight in one eye and was able to behold their first son at his birth.
In my opinion, in providing a happy ending for Jane, Bronte seems to suggest that one can enter wholly into a well-rounded and loving relationship with another.
There are still some other phrases impressed me deeply and touched my heart.
Don?t cry because it is over, smile because it happened.
It is in vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility: they must have action; and they will make it if they can not find it. Millions are condemned to a stiller doom than mine, and millions are silent revolt against their lot.
After read the whole story, I think Jane Eyre is really a wonderful book. It is worth reading a lot of times. We can learn many things from Jane who is really a excellent woman.
Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am an automaton?--a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!--I have as much soul as you,--and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom,
conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh;--it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal,--as we are!"
Why do you confide in me like this? What are you and she to me? You think that because I’m poor and plain, Ihave no feelings? I promise you, if God had gifted me with wealth and beauty, I would make it as hard for you to leave me now as it is for me to leave you. But He did not. But my spirit can address yours, as if both have passed through the grave and stood before heaven equal. 简:Let me go, sir.
I love you. I love you!
简:No, don’t make me foolish. Foolish? I need you. What’s Blanch to me? I know what I am to her. Money to manure her father’s land with. Marry me, Jane. Say you marry me.
简:You mean it? You torture me with your doubts.Say yes,say yes。God forgive me.And let no men meddle with me.She is mine.Mine.
So come out at last. You shut yourself in your room and grieve alone. Not one word of reproach.Nothing.Is that to be my punishment? I didn’t mean to wound you like this. Do you believe that?I wouldn’t hurt you not for the world. What was I to do? Confess everything I might as well have lost my life. You have lost me, Edward. And I’ve lost you.
Why did you say that to me? To punish me a little longer? Jane, I’ve been though! For the first time I have found what I can truly love. Don’t take if away from me.
简:I must leave you我必须离开您。
