Passage One

Have you ever heard the story about Miss Evens? It is a true story. Maybe many people have read about it.

One afternoon in April 1912, a new ship set off from England to America on its first trip. It was one of the largest and finest ships at that time and there were over 2,200 people. It was cold, but the trip was pleasant and people were enjoying themselves. The next day was even colder. People could see icebergs here and there.

It was night. Suddenly the man on watch shouted. ―Look out! Iceberg! Iceberg ahead!‖ It was too late. The ship hit the iceberg and came to a stop. There was a very big hole in

23werrty546

the ship and water began to come inside. Slowly the ship started to go down.

People had to leave the ship. Women and children were the first to get into the lifeboats. Suddenly a woman shouted, ―Please make room for me. My children are in that boat. I must go with them! Please!‖

―There’s no more room here,‖ someone shouted back. The children heard their mother and began to cry.

A young woman was sitting near the poor children. She stood up. ―Here,‖ she shouted. ―Take my place! I’m not married and I have no children.‖

She got out and the thankful mother joined her children in the lifeboat.

Passage Two

Crime is a very serious problem in Britain. One sort of crime which particularly worries people is juvenile delinquency – that is, crimes committed by young people. For some years juvenile delinquency has been increasing. There are two main sorts of juvenile crimes: stealing and violence. Most people do not understand why young people commit these crimes. They tend to put all the blame on the children. There are, I think, a large number of different reasons.

These crimes are not usually committed by people who are poor or in need. Young people often dislike and hate the adult world. Also in Britain today it is easier for young people to commit crimes because they have more freedom to go where they like and more money to do what they like.

There are two possible causes which are worth mentioning. More and more people in Britain live in large towns. In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. They may have been next-door neighbors for years, but have never spoken to one another. When a stranger appears in the neighborhood, nobody takes any notice. But in the village people who come from crimes are area because everybody knows everyone else. Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something wrong with our society which encourages violence and crime. It is a fact that all the time children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences the young people, but I think that young people e

23werrty546

very much influenced by the society they grow up in. I fell that the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.

61. From the passage we know that many British people at present time are confused about _____ .

A. the cause of young people’s crimes B. the increase of the crime rate

C. the problems of crimes in the country

D. the various kinds of juvenile delinquency

62. According to the passage, which group of the following young people from Britain is least likely to commit crimes?

A. Those in big cities. B. Those in the countryside.

C. Those who are very poor. D. Those who are in urgent need of help.

63. The author holds different opinion from other people in that young people _____ .

A. nowadays do not like the adult world

B. in Britain today are free than before

C. who commit crimes are greatly influenced by the films of violence and crime

D. living in small villages in Britain commit fewer crimes than those in big cities

64. One reason why young people living in large cities are likely to commit crimes is that _____ .

A. they need more money B. they live a better life

C. they can easily get organized for crimes

D. generally neighbors do not know each other

65. According to the author, who is to blame for juvenile crimes, apart from the young people themselves?

A. The society. B. Their parents.

C. The adult world. D. The development of the cities.

Passage Three

The use of motor car is becoming more and more widespread in the twentieth century; as an increasing number of countries develop both technically and economically, so a large proportion of the world population is able to buy and use a car. Possessing a car gives a much greater degree of mobility, enabling the driver to move around freely. The owner of a car is no longer forced to rely on public transport and is, therefore, nor compelled to work locally. He can choose from a greater variety of jobs and probably changes his work more frequently as he is not restricted to a choice within a small radius. Traveling to work by car is also more comfortable than having to use public transport; the driver can adjust the heating in winter and the air conditioning in summer to suit his own needs and preference. There is no irritation caused by waiting for trains, buses or underground trains, standing in long patient queues, or sitting on draughty platforms, for as long as half an hour sometimes. With the building of good, fast motorways long distances can be covered rapidly and pleasantly. For the first time in this century also, many people are now able to enjoy their leisure time to the full by making trips to the country or seaside at the weekends, instead of being confined to their immediate neighborhood. This feeling of independence, and the freedom to go where you please, is perhaps the greatest advantage of the car. But surely, everything has its drawbacks, perhaps pollution is of prime importance.

23werrty546

68. Which of the following is NOT the comfort brought by the motor car?

A. Trips to the countryside or seashore.

B. Heating in winter and air conditioning in summer.

C. Greater degree of mobility.

D. Irritation caused by traffic jam.

69. It can be inferred from the passage that _____ .

A. more and more people are able to buy and use a car

B. driving a car to work will save you more time

C. because there are not so many motorways nowadays, many people are still confined

to their neighborhood

D. public transport will be greatly improved since more people will drive a car

70. What does the paragraph preceding this passage probably discuss?

A. The pollution of motor cars. B. The problems of public transport.

C. Serious traffic accident. D. The use of motor car.

Passage Four

Between now and the end of the century, there will be many exciting developments and also many difficult problems to deal with. Perhaps the most urgent problem is to provide enough food. The world’s population is expected to reach 7,000 million to the year 2000, but already scientists have produced new and better varieties of wheat and rice and animal. They have also been experimenting with techniques of cultivating plants by using mixtures of chemical compounds and water only, and then there will be no need for ordinary soil. Another problem which the world will face is to get rid of refuse. One solution is to burn refuse at very high temperature in incinerators. A development of this, which may prove very useful in the future, is to use these incinerators to generate steam power. In fact, any new source of energy will be very welcome, as there is already a shortage of petroleum. To solve the energy problem, scientists will probably also try to make more use of solar energy.

The possible effects of some scientific field, such as lasers and cryogenics, are difficult to imagine and both already have a number of uses. The super-cooling effects of the cryogenics which change liquid helium and other gases into ―superfluids‖ and metals into ―superconductors‖, making them non-resistant to electricity, could change the world in a number of ways. The laser, with its beam of strong light, can drill a hole in a diamond, and yet can be so well controlled that it can be used in delicate eye operations. The question is whether it will be most used for peaceful purposes or as a deadly weapon.

But perhaps the most remarkable developments will occur in space flight. One of the

23werrty546

difficulties in the past has been the high cost, but now the space shuttle is being developed, and can be used a large number of times instead of only once. Already man has been to the moon. Perhaps by the end of the century he will have had close-up view of Venus or Mars.

71. How many developments are mentioned in this passage?

A. Five. B. Four. C. Six. D. Three.

72. Why is the provision of enough food becoming the most urgent problem?

A. Because people eat more than before.

B. Because the quality of soil is getting worse.

C. Because the techniques of planting are poor.

D. Because the population is increasing very fast.

73. The burning of refuse may prove very useful to help _____ .

A. save energy consumption B. solve energy problem

C. clear the air D. with the utilization of solar energy

74. It is no doubt that the laser can be used _____ .

A. for all kinds of medical operations

B. for peaceful purposes only

C. for drilling a hole in a diamond

D. for making metals non-resistant to electricity

75. The problem in space flight in the past is _____ .

A. not having enough money

B. not having techniques sophisticated enough

C. the limited use of flying vehicles

D. the limited distance that a space shuttle can fly
