It happened on July 30, 1994, at about 6:30 pm when the nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver handed me my first-born son. My wife lay on the bed next to me, tired after a very long and difficult labor and delivery(分娩). I was amazed at the life we’d created and I was afraid and interested as I considered my new situation. I wondered if I was really ready for the great responsibility I held in my arms, and then realized that I didn’t have a choice.

More than sixteen years later, and now the father of three boys, I find myself thinking about how being a father has shaped my beliefs. Along the way I’ve developed a few basic beliefs.

I believe in giving our kids choices: my wife and I are authorities in the family. However, whenever possible, we’ll give our kids the power to choose how they’ll guide themselves and contribute to our family.

I believe the whole family should come together at the end of every day for a meal; it’s necessary to reconnect family members at the table, where stories and experiences of the day are shared.

I believe that a father is not a babysitter---when I am alone with the boys, I am first their father, and that relationship is paramount. I’m not “watching the kids” whenever my wife is not with us. Being my boys’ father gives me more rights to all of the benefits and responsibilities of the job, all of the time.

I believe in the power of toys. I believe in reading aloud. I believe in running around in the yard and throwing baseballs with my kids. I believe my kids should help with housework and get paid for it. I believe in pancakes made with my children on a Saturday morning and the reading of comics on a Sunday morning. I believe in telling my boys stories, and I believe our

kids have the most fun when the TV is off.

And after these years I believe I still have a lot to learn as a father, but it’s the best education in the world.

21. How does the author’s being a father influence his life? A. He has become authority in his family. B. He becomes more responsible and tired. C. He has developed a few important beliefs.

D. He knows his family is more important than his career.

22. What is most likely to happen when the author’s family have dinner together? A. Talk about the delicious meal. B. Keep silent until the dinner is over.

C. Share stories and experiences of the day. D. Talk about how to contribute to their family.

23. Which of the following statements agrees with the author’s beliefs? A. Family activities can bring fun to family members. B. Father should be an experienced babysitter first of all.

C. Kids should help with housework and don’t get paid for the efforts. D. More fun can be found when the family watch TV together.

24. The underlined word “paramount” in Para. 5 probably means __________. A. exact B. powerful C. necessary D. important 25. Which of the following can best serve as the title of this text? A. The Best Education in the World B. The Basic Beliefs in My Life C. The Best Ways of Being a Father D. The Responsibility of Being a Father

Terror Attack in Paris --- What Scares Me?

The terror attack on November 13, 2015 in Paris is most disturbing. If anything, it strengthens my long-held stand on religion. We can argue all we want that the central characteristic of every faith is spiritual and therefore directed towards peace. But the difference between a Good Muslim(穆斯林) and ISIS(伊斯兰国), is not the difference of religion, but the difference in the way they look at, understand and interpret their faith. Let me make it absolutely clear, religion is full of such ideas as are likely to be used by a dishonest man to commit all kinds of injustice. The only true body of ideas that I can ever claim complete loyalty to is human rights and human rights only. But the question more importantly I suppose is what has religion turned us into? Even as we are debating the best way to fight terrorism, protests are breaking out in Germany seeking a stricter check against immigration. But the ones fleeing their home countries to seek protection in Europe are not always terrorists, are they? Many a time, they are concerned fathers, scared for the safety of his 16-year-old daughter, who may well be married to an ISIS fighter to bear 10 children in 10 years. As fathers, uncles, grandfathers to children ourselves, does our conscience really permit us to refuse any protection to that father? Terrorists don’t scare me---because a bunch of madmen using religion to get personal gain while hurting innocent people is nothing new. But what scares me is that when our character is tested by the attack of such poisonous ideas, we will fail. I am terrified that in our moment of feeling emotionally weak and scared, we will abandon our humanity for a false sense of security, only for our children to pay the price for what we do. Now more than ever, we must remain true to our values of compassion, love and kindness. Because if anything can save the soul of the poor man from falling into the evil designs of extremism, it is society’s helping hand and the feeling of belonging that only we can inspire. To the rich man who funds terror and even volunteers for it, all I can say is that you will pay for your crimes one way or another.

A. ISIS misinterprets religion and is by no means a Good Muslim B. every faith is surely directed towards peace

C. the children of ISIS fighters will become terrorists themselves

D. the best way to fight terrorism is to perform stricter control over immigration 34. According to the passage, what should NOT people do in face of terror attacks?

A. Feel emotionally weak and scared. B. Seek protection in another country. C. Stick to our values of humanity.

D. Stop helping people and gain a sense of security. 35. What really scares the author?

Nowadays parents arrange everything for their children and try to pave the way for their success, which is a common phenomena. For me, therefore, that is a great concern. I’m strongly opposed of this kind of a love. For one thing, children become very dependent on their parents that they failed to have independent thoughts or creative ideas. For another, overprotecting the children or giving out too much care is extremely bad for our development in the future. I think only by encouraging the children to overcome difficulties and developing by themselves they help their children to grow up to be independent and become truly successful.
