Laboratory Safety

Lab safety rules and symbols exist for YOUR protection. Know the rules and symbols to keep yourself and the people around you safe!

Lab Safety Rules

1. Always follow the teacher’s instructions and only work in the lab when the teacher is present. 2. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. No Horseplay!

3. Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until told to do so.

4. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab. Do not use lab glassware as food or

beverage containers

5. Report ALL accidents to your teacher immediately, even if you think it is minor. 6. Keep your work area clean!!!

What to do if…

Accident Teacher…I am on fire! What to do ? ? ? ? MY EYES! ? ? ? ? go to the eye wash station open your eyes wash your eyes for 15 min have a friend tell the teacher cover the person with a fire blanket tell the teacher do not remove clothing stuck to the person see a doctor T_T;;; !!! ? tell the teacher ? clean the cut ? bandage the cut ? one person tell the teacher, one person stay with the glass ? sweep the glass ? wipe the ground with a wet tissue

Waste Disposal

1. First ask your teacher where/how to dispose of waste.

2. Never pour anything down the drain unless you are told to do so.

3. A waste bottle will be supplied for substance that cannot go down the drain

Safety Symbols

Be aware of safety hazards associated with each chemical you use. The chemical is a gas under high pressure, is a dissolved gas, or a liquefied gas. The chemical will cause skin and eye irritation. Sometimes the effects are long-term. The chemical or its vapours will catch fire easily if it is near heat, flames, or sparks. The material contains harmful microorganisms (bacteria and viruses). The chemical provides oxygen and will increase the risk of fire if it is in contact with flammable substances. The chemical can burn or destroy skin and metals. If you swallow, lick, or breathe the chemical, you can become very sick or die. The chemical will undergo a dangerous reaction if subjected to heat, pressure, shock, or mixed with water. Other symbols to take note of: The container can explode if heated or punctured. Explosives Environmental The chemical is harmful to the environment. These cannot go down the drain.
