As the father of a student, I have experienced first hand what a great teacher is. My son was in the 4th grade last year, and he had a teacher called Miss Green. I believe that when he is an adult he will surely look back on her as the best teacher he has ever had.
My son has attention deficit disorder(注意力缺损症) that makes it a little more difficult for him to learn. She was able to change her teaching methods for him so that he could keep up with the rest of the class. As a result, he got straight As on many subjects. She regarded her class as a family and they even had their own class song. She would often have them sing it to encourage them and develop a team spirit for them. When she saw that they were no longer listening carefully to what she was teaching, she would have them close their textbooks, stand up all around the room and throw around a small football. This helped them clear their minds and then pay attention to the lesson again. Besides, she was quick to reply to any phone calls or emails from us and got rid of our worries about children quickly.
When my son went to the 5th grade this year, we happened to pass her classroom. When she saw my son, she smiled, and she came out and hugged him. She generally loves all of the children in her classroom and that love really shows. I can only pray that my son will continue to get teachers just like her for the rest of his school years.
21. With the teacher’s help, the writer’s son ______.
A. became the best student in his class B. was interested in singing songs C. quickly finished his 4th grade lessons D. improved his grades greatly 22. Which of the following is NOT true about Miss Green? A. She regarded the students as members of a family.
B. She had special ways to help students study. C. She was good at teaching football and music. D. She usually made a quick reply to parents’ emails. 23. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. Miss Green didn’t teach the writer’s son in the 5th grade B. Miss Green was the best teacher at the school C. all the students in the school liked Miss Green D. the writer’s son had many teachers like Miss Green 24. In the passage, the writer mainly tells us ______. A. what his son studied at school B. his son once had a good teacher
C. how to be a good and popular teacher D. a teacher who liked playing with students
B
The average American child spends three to five hours a day watching TV. In 1961, the average child began to watch television at age three; however, today it is nine months. Yet, most parents think that television has bad influence on their children. For example, in the early 1970s, my parents believed that my bad eyesight was the result of sitting too close to the screen, and they therefore made my stay at least six feet from it. Today, most people have no such worry, but many new ridiculous (荒谬的) sayings have appeared:
*TV makes kids stupid. Many children watch more educational programs when they are pre-schoolers. When they grow up, they can read more books and have much better ideas to solve difficult problems than other children.
*TV makes kids violent. The real story is not so simple. Hundreds of studies show that watching violence on TV makes children more aggressive (好斗的). But a study of over 5,000 children also finds that some positive programs make children kinder. The problem is that kids are increasingly watching shows with violence instead of those suitable for their age.
*Sitting around watching TV makes kids overweight. An experiment finds that when children watch less television, they do lose extra weight; however, reducing their television time does not make them more active. The real problem lies in snacking (吃零食). A widespread habit for kids, and junk-food advertisements(广告).
*TV helps kids get to sleep. The opposite is true. The more television children watch, the more likely they are to have irregular(不规律的)sleep and nap(小睡) patterns. Allowing kids to watch television is part of the problem, not the solution.
25. Which one is the advantage of educational TV programs?
A. They will make children solve difficult problems better than others. B. They will improve children’s ability to get along with others. C. They are likely to make children more aggressive. D. They will make sure of children’s success in the future.
26. Why are children spending much time watching TV likely to be fat?
A. Watching TV makes children lazy and inactive. B. Children are attracted by the food advertisement on TV. C. Watching TV doesn’t burn up as much fat as doing sports. D. Children like to snack while watching TV.
27. What influence does watching TV have on a child’s sleep?
A. Children are likely to sleep deeper after watching TV. B. Children’s sleep time will be greatly reduced. C. It will make children form a bad habit of sleeping.
D. It will make children sleep easier.
28. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To increase people’s knowledge of watching TV. B. To warn parents of the disadvantages of watching TV.
C. To explain the bad influences that watching TV has on children. D. To correct parents’ wrong ideas of television’s effect on children.
C
Most children are exposed to literature from an early age ,that is , being read books and told stories and, later, kids will go on to read on their own. These stories help children to understand the world, and the characters help teach them how we behave as people. There are several different types of children's literature.
Picture books are for young children or beginning readers. They can either have just pictures, without words, such as “The Snowman” or have pictures with a small amount of text, like in “Where the Wild Things Are”. Picture books often feature repetitive phrases to help children who are learning to read.
Fantasy books are any novel that is based on unrealistic(不现实的) events. Fantasy is widespread in children's literature. Perhaps the most famous children's fantasy books of the late 20th and early 21st centuries are the “Harry Potter” novels.
Realistic children's literature can either be set in contemporary(当代的)times or in the past. As the name suggests, the characters are realistic and the plot line follows something that could actually happen. Realistic historical fiction(小说)uses real events from the past as a basis for the story.
Traditional literature is the name given to any stories which orally stemmed from and were later written down. These include some fairy tales, folk tales, myths, legends. Traditional literature stories can be found
in books, and some are the ones that a parent may tell a child from memory. Some of the best known traditional literature stories include “The Tortoise and the Hare,” “Cinderella,” and “Little Red Riding Hood.”
29. What do we know from Paragraph 1?
A. It is forbidden to read to kids when they are small. B. It is not a choice to read to kids when they are small. C. It is not a good action to develop a reading habit. D. It is of great benefit for parents to read to kids.
30. Which of the following types do “Harry Potter” novels belong to?
A. Picture books B. Fantasy books C. Realistic children’s literature D. Traditional literature 31. According to paragraph 4,realistic historical fiction _______.
A. tells stories that happened in the past. B. tells stories that happened at the moment. C. tells stories that happened in the future. D. is based on unrealistic events.
32. The underlined word “stemmed from” in the last paragraph is closed in meaning to “________”.
A. started from
B. came over
C. put on D. resulted in
D
When Joan gave birth to the first boy in her family in three generations, she and her husband were overjoyed. So were her parents. Joan expected her elder sister, Sally, to be just as delighted as them. Joan had always admired Sally, the beauty and the star of the family, and felt happy about her achievements.
But since the baby's arrival, the sisters have become distant. Joan feels hurt for Sally seems completely
uninterested in her baby. Sally, who has no children, claims that her younger sister \had a baby before.\
Neither Sally nor Joan understands that the real cause of the current coldness is that their family roles have suddenly changed to the opposite. Finally Joan seems to be better than her elder sister--and Sally doesn't like it! Their distance may be temporary, but it shows that childhood competition don't fade(消退) easily as ages grow. It can remain powerful in relationships throughout life.
In a study of the University of Cincinnati, 65 men and women between ages 25 and 93 were asked how they felt about their brothers and sisters. Nearly 75 percent admitted having hidden competitive feelings. In a few cases, these emotions were so strong as to have affected their entire lives.
Many adult brothers and sisters are close, supportive, but still tend to compete. Two brothers I know turn into killers when on opposite sides of a tennis net. Off the court(球场), they are the best of friends. My own younger sister can't wait to tell me when I've put on weight. However, she's a terrible cook and that pleases me; I tease her when she comes to dinner. Happily, despite these small failings, we have been an important resource for each other.
Some brothers and sisters stay at arm's length, but never give up competition completely. Why do these puzzling, unproductive, often painful relationships continue to exist? 33. When Joan's son was born, Sally______ .
A. felt very happy B. didn’t feel delighted C. moved away D. admired her a lot 34. What happens to children's desire to compete with their brothers and sisters? A. It sometimes will disappear when they grow up.
B. It will never disappear throughout life.
C. It will improve their relationships when they grow up. D. It will never harm their relationships when they grow up. 35. Why does the author's sister often tell her when she's put on weight? A. Because she wants the author to go on a diet.
B. Because she wants the author to stop calling her a bad cook. C. Because she wants to make fun of the author's weight. D. Because she wants to be honest with the author.

Dear Mandy,
I'm not doing well in my lessons at school, especial in maths. My dad says I must try hard because he wants me go to university. He thinks I'm lazy, but it's not true. I work really hard, often studied late into the night!I've tried to talk to my mother, but she always said I have to work as hard like my brother does. My brother doesn't study very hard, and he always gets excellent grades. It's not fair!
The only thing I like it is art. My teacher says I'm the best student she's had for year. When I tell his dad this, all he says is“You mustn't waste your time on art. You must focus your mind on your lessons!”
I'm feeling quite puzzling what to do now. Would you please help me out? Thanks a lot!
Yours sincerely, Lisa
