Discover your student accommodation

I really enjoyed my time in halls of residence. I made lots of friends and settled in to student life very quickly. University accommodation is ideal because it offers you a place to study, eat, sleep and socialise in safe, informal surroundings; a place where you can be at the heart of student life, but find your own space when you need it.

Meal Plan

The Meal Plan is both flexible and convenient, offering a variety of food at outlets at the Vale and across campus that cover opening times from 8.00am until midnight.

It is simple to use: £50 each week is loaded on to your student ID card, and you then use this card over a seven day period as you would a debit card at any University catering outlet. The card is refreshed each week with a new amount of £50.

The Meal Plan fee of £47.06 a week is

included in your accommodation rent, and then we top it up to £50 each week giving you one free meal a week. You must spend all of your £50 each week as the funds will not roll over to the next week.

There are many benefits to meal plan including:p It adds to your social life as students living in flats on Meal Plan all come down to The Hub to eat together in the evening

p With a busy academic and social timetable it’s important to eat well, the University’s catering department provides a range of healthy foods

p Frees up valuable time that would otherwise be spent shopping, cooking and washing upp Helps you budget your finances easily every week

p With over 20 coffee shops and restaurants on campus including the Business school, Medical school and library, there are a wide variety of food options available to youp No need to carry cash and if you lose your ID card no one else can access your moneyp Meal times aren’t set so you can eat whenever suits you best

We cater for most dietary requirements including Halal, Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten free and our chefs are always at hand to discuss individual student needs. The Hub at the Vale provides a number of distinct food offers:

p ‘The Melt’ opens all day for breakfast and lunch, with barista coffee, pastries and cakes served in between. The Melt, with its comfy armchairs, is a great place to relax and hang out with your friends, and with wireless internet available it is often used by students to carry out some group study over a coffee.

p ‘Infusion’ is our largest restaurant on

The Vale and opens at 4.30pm for dinner. It offers a choice of ten main course items along with a salad bar, homemade soups and deserts. Infusion is the ideal place to come home to for dinner. Flatmates often eat together and it is a great way of unwinding after a busy day on Campus. Freshers, particularly in those first few weeks of arriving, gain a real sense of belonging and community from dining with their flat mates here and settle in very

quickly to their new life at The University of Birmingham.

p Our popular Pizza Shack is located in the Melt, serving 14” pizzas freshly made to order up to midnight. Our pizzas can be eaten in the pizza shack or boxed ready for students to take back to their flats.

‘I lived on the Vale and loved Meal Plan. There was so much choice and being able to just swipe your card to pay was simple. Perfect when you don’t want to cook!’

Jamie, third year Human Biology

p

The Hungry Duck, serving street food, is located above the Duck and Scholar and serves Gourmet hot dogs during the night.p At the base of the new Chamberlain Tower will be a dedicated restaurant and bar, opening for the first term of 2015, which offers a great destination restaurant for you to enjoy more of a high street dining experience with friends.

The Hub

All of our students are welcome to use the Hub facilities, and those not on Meal Plan can pay for food and drink at any of the outlets. As well as The Melt, Infusion, The Hungry Duck and the Pizza Shack, the Hub also has a number of other attractions for our students.

p This includes the student bar, ‘The Duck and Scholar’, with pool tables, live bands and cocktails. With its fantastic views across The Vale lake, The Duck and Scholar is a firm favourite with our students.

p A convenience store is located next to Reception in The Hub and provides a range of fresh and frozen groceries alongside a range of drinks and confectionary. Costcutter also sells newspapers, stamps and some pharmaceutical products.

p Students can also get active and enjoy the view whilst exercising on the outdoor gym equipment surrounding the lake.

Sustainable Living

Sustainability is at the heart of student accommodation. We are passionate about championing pro-environmental behaviour supporting projects that promote sustainable living to staff and students.

Whilst living at our residences you will become familiar with GREG, the Green initiative that aims to spark action into students living in our accommodation, so that Recycling and Environmental behaviour becomes the norm – Genius! This student led initiative promotes

sustainability at the residences by engaging with behaviour change through events,

competitions and campaigns. If you would like to get involved with GREG and enhance your student experience, there are opportunities to volunteer with GREGs Green Army, allowing you to create a real and valuable impact on making the university a greener campus.Students have access to comprehensive recycling facilities across our three Villages and inhabitants are educated on saving energy and reducing waste. Students are positively encouraged to take part in our annual end of term charity reuse scheme every summer, which reduces waste and provides vital funds and resources for local charities. Since 2011 we

have raised in excess of £80,000 for charity.

Our environmental impact is also considered when undertaking new builds and refurbishing residences, with a large percentage of our accommodation powered by our own

Combined heat and power stations, which maximise the production of energy and

recuperate heat loss. Other projects include the use of above specification insulation, implementation of LED lighting and the use of light sensors across the residences, all of which has contributed in a reduction in C02 emissions per bed space since 2005/06.We are proud to be a Fairtrade university and have held this status for over 10 years. Students and visitors to the university can enjoy Fairtrade teas, coffees, bananas and other sweet treats at our restaurants and cafes.

14Your guide to accommodation

Living and Guild Lettings

Private sector accommodationSome applicants may not be eligible for University accommodation under our Guarantee Schemes or may not choose to live in University accommodation. Also, after their first year at the University, many students choose to live in shared housing in the private sector.

Living, alongside its partners Guild Lettings, can help with finding accommodation in the private sector, including advice on likely costs, contract matters and suitable locations. They can also advise on local accommodation for students with families.

Living, the University’s accommodation service, and Guild Lettings, the Guild of

Students’ lettings service, work in partnership to help students find the right accommodation for them during their studies at Birmingham. Guild Lettings are the first point of call for students searching for private rented accommodation, they only work with landlords accredited with the Midland Landlord Accreditation Scheme and do not charge any fees to students.

The University of Birmingham private sector accommodation search facility can be found at www.birminghamstudentpad.co.uk and more information on Guild Lettings can be found at www.guildlettingsbirmingham.co.uk
