Long, long ago people made fires from lightening (闪电). But they had to keep the fire burning, for they couldn’t start it again if there was no lightening. Later, they found out hitting two pieces of stone together could make a spark (火花). The spark could fire dry leaves. In this way they could make the fire again if it went out. Then people also learned to make a fire by rubbing (摩擦). They made a hole on a piece of wood and put a smaller stick into the hole. They turned the stick again and again. After a few minutes they got a fire.

Years went by, people learned other ways to make a fire. Sometimes they used the heat from the sun. They held a piece of glass in the right way and made a piece of paper on fire.

About two centuries ago, people began to make matches. Matches brought people a quick and easy way to make fires. Today matches are still being used, but people have more new ways to make fires. New York is a very large city with 8 million people. How do so many people move about the city on their way to work and school? So, we should know something about its transport.

In New York you can travel about the city by subway, bus, taxi and car. The subway runs on the railroad lines under the city. It crosses the city at different points and goes to all parts of the city. Traveling by subway is the fastest way to get around the city.

The second way to travel around the city is by public bus. It’s a slower way to travel. This is because the bus moves in road traffic which is often heavy. You can also travel around the city by taxi. This is the most expensive way, but the taxi will take you to the very place you wish to go to. If traffic is heavy, the taxi will be slow. During the mornings and afternoons, there is the “rush hour”. This is the time when the traffic is very heavy with people going to and from work. The last way to get around New York is using your own car. However, it’s not easy for you to drive, especially when you are driving in the “rush hour”. If there is an accident on the road, you will have to wait for a long time.

The best time to travel around the city is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the time after the morning “rush hour” and before the evening “rush hour”. Traffic will be less crowed because most people are already at school or at work.

66. The text is mainly about ______.

A. the weather of New York

B. the transport in New York

C. the people in New York

D. traffic accidents in New York

67. The fastest way to travel in New York is by ______.

D. car

68. The most expensive way to travel in New York is by ______.

A. subway

C. bus

D. car

69. The phrase “rush hour” in the fourth paragraph means “______” in Chinese.

History is the story of us, human beings. Everyone who has lived and everything that has happened are part of history. But history is not only what happened in the past. The word also means the study of the past, through old written records and other kinds of facts.

(A) Why do we study history? One reason is that we enjoy it. A good story is even better if it is true, and history is full of good stories, though they can be terrible too. A more serious reason is to understand ourselves and the world we live in. To understand events happening now, we need to know their causes. (B) We cannot understand the present if we know nothing about the past. History helps to explain why things are the way they are.

Of course, history books cannot tell us everything about the past, not even everything that is recorded. A history of the world has to pick out the people and events that changed the world.

Since ancient times, great civilizations (文明) have appeared in different countries and regions (地区). Usually, only three or four existed (存在) at the same time. While they lasted, they changed the lives not only of their own people, but of their neighbors too.

1. Is history the story of us, human beings?

2. How do we study history?

3. What is the best title for this passage?

4. 将(A)句改为被动语态。

Why ?

5. 将(B)句改为同义句。

We cannot understand the present if we ____________ about the past.

One possible version:

Save Water

Water is very important in our life. For example, we brush teeth with water, and farmers use it to water plants. If there is no water, we can’t cook food and can’t put out the fire. In a word, we can’t live without water. We must try our best to save water. We should turn off the shower when we put the shampoo in the hair. Also we should save water by turning off the tap after we use it. So it’s necessary for us to save water.
