The artist and architect Maya Lin became famous at a young age because she won a national competition to design a memorial honoring those serving the country. The memorial based on Lin's design was one of the most popular and influential monuments in Washington D.C. and was visited by three million people each year.
She was also famous for many other works, including the Civil Rights Memorial and the Riggio-Lynch Chapel. In 2016, the president presented Lin with the nation’s highest honor for her architecture, sculpture, and landscape art.
Lin recently spoke at William Paterson University as part of the university's well-known lecture series. She thought of herself more as an artist- making
2
sculptures- who also happened to build buildings. She supposed good works must be full of art and it was the soul of architecture. At Yale, she decided that architecture would be a perfect combination of art and math. Her formal training was in architecture. Lin, earned a Master’s Degree in Architecture in1986.
She felt close to nature and the environment as young person. When she was growing up, she was almost outdoors playing in the woods behind the house. The environmental movement also had a strong influence on her childhood. She’s always been focused on nature, science and the environment in her work.
Her concern for the environment and the sad fact that one species is causing the extinction of so many other species, as well as the urgency of trying to solve climate change inspired her to start the “What Is Missing?" project. By protecting and restoring habitats, we could reduce fossil fuel emissions (排放量) and protect bio-persity (生物多样性) at the same time.
She showed us a new way of looking at the world. She believes that all of us whether we choose to help other people or the planet - are all helping ourselves.
16. What can we know about Maya Lin from the first two paragraphs?
A. She had special feelings for Washington.
B. She won many design competitions in the world.
C. She first made a name for herself by designing a park.
D. She was recognized by the nation for her achievements.
17. What did Lin mainly share with students in universities?
A. She attached much importance to th? sense of art in works.
B. She encouraged students to pursue further education.
C. She advised students to learn both art and math well.
D. She thought highly of being an artist rather than an architect.
18. Why did Lin start the project “What Is Missing"?
A. Her students inspired her to do so.
B. She wanted to bring back her childhood memory.
C. She was eager to save the environment and species.
D. She was deeply influenced by the environmental movement.

Every day, Americans throw away 500 million plastic straws(吸管), enough to circle the Earth twice, or fill 125 school buses. They are almost never recycled because they’re too small and could be made from several different types of plastic. They simply contribute to the massive problem of plastic pollution; eight million tons of plastic is dumped into the oceans every year.
Plastic straws are now the target of a growing movement to reduce their use. Possibly the first of such campaigns, Be Straw Free was started in 2011 by Milo Cress, who was only nine years old at the time. “I noticed that whenever I ordered a drink at a restaurant, it would usuall y come with a straw in it, and I don’t usually need a straw,” he said. “This seemed like a huge waste. Straws are made of oil, a precious and finite resource. Is making single-use plastic straws, which will be used for a matter of minutes before being tossed away, really what we want to do with this
3
resource?”
Cress started asking restaurants in Burlington, Vermont, where he lived at the time, to stop providing straws automatically for customers and make them optional instead. Many agreed and his request made ripples(涟漪) nationwide. The restaurants that make the switch report a reduction in the number of straws they use between 50% and 80%.
The anti-straw sentiment has crossed borders into the UK, where straws have been included in a government plan to ban all plastic waste by 2042. Last year, large pub chain Wetherspoons announced that it would replace plastic straws with paper alternatives across 900 outlets. After the announcement, many smaller chains and pubs across the country followed suit. According to Wetherspoons CEO John Hutson, the move will save 70 million plastic straws a year and the reaction from sponsors has been “very positive”.
Offering alternatives or making plastic straws optional, rather than banning them outright, is a common trait(特点) among these campaigns. “There are many other viable alternatives to single-use plastic drinking straws that are less harmful to the environment, wildlife and humans,” said Jackie Nunez, founder of The Last Plastic Straw.
19. Why aren’t the plastic st raws recycled?
A. It will cause serious pollution.
B. They are too costly to be recycled.
C. They can be dumped into the ocean easily.
D. It is not difficult to find the raw materials to produce them.
20. What efforts does the Wetherspoons make to reduce the use of plastic straws?
A. To ban the use of plastic straws.
B. To close some of its outlets.
C. To offer customers alternatives.
D. To seek the government’s support.
21. What is the reaction of other smaller chains and pubs after the announcement of Wetherspoons?
A. Uncaring.
B. Favorable.
C. Cautious.
D. Disapproving.
C
Digital Etiquette(礼节), or netiquette, is a set of rules for how to behave online. It’s a lot like life etiquette, which is basically having good manner s and treating others with respect. It’s just as important in our digital lives, including how we act in online games or how we communicate in emails, texts, instant messages and on social networking websites. All of these platforms let us talk and share instantly wherever we are.
Unfortunately, some people can lose control the moment they jump online. When they disagree with someone, or have strong feelings about a topic, they end up saying stuff they’d never say in person! They may send ruder emails a nd IMs or try to start arguments on message boards. That’s called flaming, and it can lead to full-on flame wars, insulting(辱骂、侮辱) arguments between two or more users. On the Internet, it’s pretty easy to stay anonymous(匿名的), or unidentified. Having a secret identity to hide behind can make people pretty brave. And when all they see of you
4
is screen name or a funny icon, they might forget that they’re dealing with a real human being!
The principle is simple: Just like in real life, you should treat other people the way you want to be treated. You wouldn’t want somebody to be rude to you, so don’t be rude to anyone else.
Of course, netiquette isn’t just about being nice; it’s also about communicating clearly. That means keeping emails and IMs clear, and to the point. It also means making your messages easy to read and understand, which can depend on your audience. For instance, some abbreviations(缩略词)and emoticons may be fine with friends. But they’re generally not appropriate in formal communication. And whatever you do, don’t write in all capital letters! Writing in all caps makes it seem like you’re yelling.
Lastly, never post anything about your friends on a blog or a social networking site unless you are allowed to. People’s personal informatio n is private, and you can really ruin relationships if you post something that a friend or a friend’s parents don’t want on the web. And keep in mind that the Internet is not a private place; if you wouldn’t want a parent, teacher or future employer to see something you post, don’t post it!
22. According to the passage, the users of social media are advised __________.
A. to behave online with common etiquette
B. to cause arguments on message boards
C. to be respectful of others online rather than offline
D. to apply abbreviations and emoticons as many as possible
23. Why might an anonymous Internet user feel brave enough to say horrible things in response to a blog post?
A. Because he can make more friends if he says mean things.
B. Because he knows his friends will recognize him and think better of him.
C. Because he can insult others without worrying about deliberate punishment.
D. Because he can impress older, smarter people with his remarks.
24. Which of the following is the best way to text your uncle to say you’ll be back in an hour?
A. b there in 60, cu 18r!
B. BE THERE IN AN HOUR. SEE YOU LATER!
C. I’ll be home in an hour. See you later!
D. im running late be there in an hour!
25. Which of the following is a clear rule about posting photos online?
A. If you take a photograph, you can do whatever you like about it.
B. Information about your friends, including photographs, is private.
C. It’s illegal to post pictures online if people in the pictures don’t like it.
D. You should always avoid posting images on the internet.

When she was 22 years old, Pat Jones decided to travel around the world and see as many foreign places as she could while she was young. she finished college at home in Britain, Pat chose to visit Latin America first, so she managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia. Pat spoke a little Spanish, so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.
A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind: if you dream in a foreign language, it means that you have really mastered it. Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in Spanish and they would dream in English。
One day, Tim, one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early and had slept badly. Pat was quite angry with him, for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told her that he dreamed all night and his dream was in English.
"In English!" Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also secretly jealous. Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her student and asked him to tell her about his dream.
"All the people in my dream spoke English," Tim said. "And all the signs were in English. All the newspapers and magazines and all the TV programs were in English." "But that's wonderful," said Pat. "What did all the people say to you?" she asked. "I'm sorry, Miss Jones. That's why I slept so badly all through the night. I didn't understand a word they said. It was a nightmare!" Tim answered.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
After hearing the boy’s words, Pat, the English teacher, began to shake her belief in the sentence stuck in her mind. Her jealousy had all gone. Staring into the boy’s eyes, Pat sensed something wrong hidden there. Obviously, the boy was telling a lie. Seeing the negative effect his behavior would have on her students, Pat decided to teach the boy a lesson. Though she knew only a little Spanish, she decided to scold him using the language.
10
In order to inspire her students to speak English, Pat arranged for several people in the secondary school to have weekly talks, their topics ranging from traveling around the world to language learning methods. After several weeks, many of her students came running to her, telling her that they finally dreamed in English. This time, instead of being jealous, Pat felt proud of them, saying she would also try her best to learn Spanish so that one day she would also dream in Spanish.
