Have you ever seen a redwood? They are tall! They are also called Sequoias, a common name for a group of big, grand evergreen trees of the cypress (柏树) family. They can grow up to 100 feet tall! The Sequoias are so big that they are even bigger than whales! If you saw a picture of a full-grown Sequoia with a person standing next to it, that person would only appear as a large dot! Even if you saw the person well enough to identify him or her, the Sequoia would be such a huge background that you wouldn't know it was a tree! The circumference (周长)of a Sequoia is so large that

it would lake at least ten people to join hands around it to match it!

The Sequoia can be found on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. A Sequoia weighs as much as 2,500 metric tons! If you want to know how old a tree is after it has been cut down, you can look at the stump(残杆),and count the number of rings it has. Once you figure that out, you’ll know how old the tree is. Some Sequoia trees arc 2,300 years of age while others are even older and can live up to 4,000 years! The leaves of a Giant Sequoia are close to the branches and the bark is often very soft. The wood is light, and highly resistant(有抵抗力的)to insects and fire.

At one time, the most popular Sequoia was the dawn redwood. They are about 100 feet high and have a diameter (直径 )of about 6 feet. 21. The first paragraph mainly tells us ________ .

\Reef Adventure\the rea-life expedition (考察)of ocean explorers and underwater filmmakers Howard and Michele Hall. Using large cameras, the Halls guide us to the islands and waters of the South Pacific. They will show us the health and beauty of coral reefs in documents. On the big screen, you’ll feel like you’re diving and exploring right alongside them.

Howard and Michele have been diving down to coral reefs for almost three decades, but in recent years, they have noticed the decline of their favorite reefs. They think they should take some action so they set out for the South Pacific. They hope the pictures they bring back will raise awareness about the danger that coral reefs face, and the health of the global oceans.

The Halls visit many reefs and film many interesting reef inhabitants (栖居动物).You’ll dive down to the deep reefs of the Twilight Zone, a place no one else has ever been to. You'll swim with hundreds of white reef sharks. But sadly, you'll also swim through large death coral areas and learn with the Halls how our actions may cause these devastating results.

Along their journey the Halls meet scientists working to save the reefs. In Fiji, they are guided to the beautifully untouched reefs of the country. In Tahiti, the Halls join a local activity of Reef Check, an international organization of divers who help study local coral resources. Finally, in Rangiroa Howard alone searches for the huge schools of sharks which are well known to live there. If these sharks still swim in the waters of Rangiroa, that's a good sign for the health of the whole ecosystem (生态系统).
