一、产品说明书的定义与功能

(一)产品说明书的定义

所谓产品说明书就是生产企业向广大公众和用户介绍宣传其产品的说明性材料或文书。

(二)产品说明书的功能

产品说明书具有信息功能、指示功能。

具体说来，产品说明书的功能表现在以下三个方面： 1．介绍产品 2．指导消费 3．扩大销售

总之，产品说明书的主要功用在于让用户了解产品的成分或构成、功能(功效)、用法、注意事项、维修保养等，从而激发用户购买产品的欲望。

二、产品说明书的内容

产品说明书的结构比较简单，一般由标题、正文、署名三部分构成。

其中标题可以直接写“产品简介”或“说明书”、“说明”、“产品介绍”等，也可以只写产品的具体名称如“虎标万金油”、“白猫牌洗衣用漂白剂”、“紫星远红外热敷带”等，英文如Displaying pictures and videos on a television、Kodak EasyShare等。

正文一般分项列出产品成分或构成、性能、用途、用法、注意事项等。

署名中的主要信息一般包括产品的生产商和／或经销商的名称、地址、电话、邮编等。

下面先看一份完整的中文产品说明书及其英译文：

Qingyin Wan

Ingredients: Fructus Chebulae；Fructus Mume；Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae; Radix Puerariae；Radix Trichosanthis；Poria；Massala；Radix Glycyrrhizae.

Description: Brown big honeyed pills；tastes sweet，slightly sour and astringent． Action：To remove heat and relieve sore-throat and promote production of body fluid and moisten for dryness．

Indications：Loss of body fluid due to lung—heat，discomfort in pharynx，dryness of the throat and mouth，celostomia and aphonia．

Usage and dosage：1 pill each time，twice a day，to be swallowed with warm boiled water or kept in mouth to dissolve gradually．

Precaution：Contraindicated with pungent and spicy foods.

Notice：Remove the waxen shell and the plastic shell before taking it；do not swallow in the whole pill．

一般情况下，说明书的重点在于强调产品的使用以及注意事项。请看下面的例子： 例2：

Adults: usually 2 tablets daily, morning and noon. In severe cases the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.

Elderly patients: 1 tablet in the morning. In cases of insomnia or severe restlessness, additional treatment with a sedative in the acute phase is recommended.

成人：通常每天两片，早晨及中午各1片。严重病例早晨的剂量可加至2片。

老年病人通常每天1片，早晨口服。对失眠或严重不安的病例，建议在急性期加服镇静剂。

三、产品说明书的语言要求

1．准确无误 2．简洁清晰

3．通俗易懂，措辞紧凑

例：保质期: -18°C以下温度保存12个月。

Shelf life: Twelve months (to be kept under the temperature of-18°C.)

例：雨衣淋湿，须挂阴凉通风处阴干，忌在烈日下暴晒，如有皱纹折印，不可熨烫。

The wet raincoat has to be dried in a shady and well-vented place instead of being exposed to the burning sun. Even if there is any folding, it cannot be ironed．

例：In order to run the software, put the support software CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

四、产品说明书的翻译原则

四、产品说明书的翻译原则 (一)客观真实地传达原文信息 例：

Pantene Pro—V Treatment Shampoo now contains even more Pro-Vitamin B5，which deeply penetrates your hair from root to tip，making it healthy and shiny．With a built—in conditioner，Treatment Shampoo cleans and conditions in one easy step． 潘婷Pro—V营养洗发露现含有更多维他命原B5，营养能由发根彻底渗透至发尖，补充养分，令头发健康、亮泽。潘婷PRO—V洗发露兼含护发素，能够做到洗发同时护发。 原文中deeply penetrates your hair from root to tip译成“营养能由发根彻底渗透至发尖，补充养分”详细而忠实地传达了原文的信息。 例41：

SPFl 0 contains Vitamin E and unique protective ingredients which form a breathing protective screen on your skin’S surface，blocking out air pollutants，UV rays and color cosmetics，providing you with comprehensive protection for healthier skin all year round．

SPFl0蕴含维他命E及独特的防护成分，在皮肤表面形成一层透气的保护膜，有效隔离脏空气，避免污染物伤害肌肤，隔离彩妆，为健康肌肤提供一年四季的完美呵护。

该例句中Vitamin E、unique protective ingredients、breathing protective screen等信息在翻译中都忠实地再现出来。 例42：

绿源苔干有清热降压、通经脉、壮筋骨、去口臭、解热毒酒毒的功效。 It has been proved that Lvyuan Taigan is able to produce certain medical

effects，namely，to allay internal heat and fever，to reduce hypertension，to regulate and strengthen bodily functions，to relieve halitosis and to dispel the effects of alcoh01．

译文基本忠实地传达出原文“清热降压、通经脉、壮筋骨、去口臭、解热毒酒毒”等有关产品功效的信息。

(二)译文简洁通顺紧凑

由于产品说明书一方面向用户传达有关产品的信息，另一方面也具有广告的功能。为了让广大的消费者都能够阅读说明书的译文，获取有关产品的信息，说明书的翻译除要忠实地传达原文信息外，还要力求语言的简洁，从而使说明书的译文能为一般读者所读懂，进而促使产品对读者产生吸引力，更好地提高产品的市场潜力。但是，要注意，英译汉时简洁并不意味着大白话，而应该注意措辞紧凑。例如： 例44：

Should you encounter some problems during the installation or use of this computer，please refer to this trouble—shooting guide prior to calling the helpdesk．Look up the problem in the left column and then check the suggestions in the right column

安装或使用本机如遇问题，请先阅读本疑难解决之说明，如不能解决问题，再致电客服

部。请在左栏中查找问题，在右栏查看所建议的解决方法。

英文多使用介词表示连贯，据G．Curme统计，英语各类介词共约286个。(连淑能，1993：50)因此，可以说“介词是英语里最活跃的词类之一，是连接词、语或从句的重要手段”(同上)。而汉语中介词使用较少，“常常不用或省略介词”(同上)。鉴于英汉这两种语言的差别，英译汉时往往省略表示方位和时间的介词，因此例44原文中的during、of等介词省译，使得汉语表达相对简洁和紧凑。 例45：

If replacement pans are used in making repairs，these pans，may be remanufactured．or may contain remanufactured materials．If it is necessary to replace the entire product，it may be replaced with a remanufactured product．

若维修需用替换零部件，则这些零部件可以是翻新过的，或含有翻新过的材料。如有必要替换整个产品，则可能用翻新产品替换。

和原文相比，译文措辞比较严谨简洁，譬如第一句中的介词in省译，原因如上文所述；第二句中的代词it、冠词a等都省略不译。因为，这一句中，第一个it是形式主语，汉语没有形式主语这种概念，第二个it指前文已提及的entire product，汉语前面已经翻译了这一名词，所以后面不必重复，更不必使用“它”来代称，同时，汉语中没有表示一类的冠词，所以这些词语均省译，这样避免了啰唆与重复，使译文简洁易懂。 例46：

请仔细阅读说明书，以便使本机发挥其最佳性能，经久耐用，不出故障。 To obtain the best performance and enduring failure—free use，please read this instruction carefully．

原文中的“发挥”这一动词省译，“经久耐用，不出故障”译成enduring failure．free use，

显得简单明了。 例47：

一周使用一次，深层长效，美白修护，肌肤水嫩白皙。

Use it once a week and it will nourish your skin deep and remain long effective， making your skin tender and fair．

中文很显然带有广告的语气，所以极尽汉语的描写之能事，而英文偏于简洁，使用祈使句，所以译文和原文相比略显简洁，既起到了说明信息的效果，又起到了宣传的效果。 例48：

吸拔时先用右手食、中指夹持罐腹，用拇指按压罐底，使气罐变成凹底形状，随把气罐平放于应吸部位上，再用左手拇、食两指固定罐口，右手母、食两指移到罐腹进行挤捏，使罐底凸起，一旦罐底变成凹形就可牢固吸着。(针灸医用气罐说明书)

Clamp the belly part between your right-hand fore and middle fingers，and press the thumb against the bottom，SO that the air jar becomes concave；then lay the jar mouth on the cupped area．And again use the left—hand thumb and fore finger to fix the jar mouth，move the right—hand thumb and fore finger to the belly part to

原文看似复杂，但实际上只是因为变换手指的位置。译文“既没有优美的辞藻，又没有用婉转的修辞手段”(碧青，周丽蕊，1998：175)，里面使用了一些祈使句，读者一口气读完之后，会很清楚地把握产品的操作方法。

(三)专业术语到位

前文说过，由于产品说明书所介绍的产品有时候是专业性比较强的产品，那么产品说明书中难免会出现专业技术词汇。在翻译当中，术语的翻译一定要符合目的语的专业术语规范，否则，会让消费者特别是专业技术类读者感到“丈二和尚摸不着头脑”。例如： 例49：

It is used for the treatment of infection before the infecting organism has been identified or when caused by sensitive bacteria．

在感染体尚未确认或因敏感细菌引起感染时，使用本品治疗。

这里的infection、infecting organism、sensitive bacteria都是医学术语，分别译成了“感染”、“感染体”和“敏感细菌”等术语。 例50：

Avoid using any combustible material near the appliance；comply with the operation instructions when cleaning anti—grease filters and when removing grease deposits for the appliance.

不得在抽油烟机附近使用任何易燃物；清洗除油烟过滤网罩和油垢时务必遵照操作说明。

这里的combustible material、anti—grease filters、grease deposits都属于专业 术语，在译文中分别转换成“易燃物”、“除油烟过滤网罩”和“油垢 例51：

The USB Driver allows the system to recognize the USB ports on the main-board．You need to install this driver if you are running Windows 95．

USB驱动程序可以使系统识别主板上的USB端口。如果您正在运行Win-dows 95，则需要安装该驱动程序。
