Praise is like sunlight to the human spirit. Even when taking our leave it seems we English are vicitims of some strange deficiencies in our valedictory vocabulary. The standard term 'Goodbye' is both too formal and too final. It may be just the job for usher\perhaps in an attempt to escape implications of finality, many people now say (Bye bye' instead; others try to make this particularly nauseating bit of baby-talk more acceptable by shortening it to \ 2、段中主题句。 Shortly after the war ended, Lincoln was shot while attending a play in a Washington theater. He died within a few hours. The uncontrolled emotional reaction of the nation to his death was almost unbelievable and demonstrated the deep esteem in which he was held. Newspapers were edged with black; religious leaders gave praise of Lincoln instead of their prepared sermons. His funeral procession in Washington was miles long Lincoin's body was taken by train back to his former home in spring field, Illinois, but in all the major cities 2

through which the train passed , the coffin was paraded through streets lined with sorrowful thousands. In the small towns through which the train passed , bells rang in honor of the dead President. Citizens lit torches a- long the railroad track to show their last respects. When we watch a person walk away from us, his image shrinks in size. But since we know that he is not shrinking, we make an unconscious correcting and see him as retaining his true stature. Past experience tells us what his true stature is with reject to our own. Any sane and dependable expectation of the future re- quires that he has the same stature when we next encounter him. Our perception is thus a prediction; it embrace the past and the future as well as the present. Good manners are important in all countries, but ways of expressing good manners are different from country to country. Americans eat with knives and forks ;Japanese eat with chopsticks. Americans say Hi when they meet; Japanese bow. Many American men open doors for women; Japanese men do not. On the surface , it appears that good manners in America are not good manners in Japan, and in a way this is true. But in any country, the only manners that are important are those involving one person's behavior toward another person. In all countries it is good manners to behave considerately toward others and bad manners not to. It is only way of behaving politely that differs from country to country. In 1999 you will sleep later because your job will start later in the morning. Too, machines will do most of your routine work for you. Also, you will travel to work on a moving sidewalk. Furthermore, you will talk to friends on a picture-phone. Finally, you will take longer vacations in more distant places since transportion will be so much faster and cheaper. Life in 1999 will be different from what it is today.
A. Our baby was not doing well, so Effie financed my wife’s trip to New York for consultation with a specialist. B. Give your help to those in greater need. C. The oddest part of the whole affair is that people whom I help often help others later on. D. Effie worked diligently all her life. E. “Pay me whenever you like,” said Effie, climbing back into her truck. F. “Don’t give it to me all at once,” she said. “Any apples today?” Effie asked cheerfully at my window. I followed her to her truck and bought a kilo. On credit, of course. Cash was the one thing in the world I lacked just then. (1) _____ All pretense (借口) of payment was dropped when our funds, food and fuel decreased to alarming lows. Effie came often, always bringing some gift: a jar of peaches or some firewood. There were other generosities. (2) _____ Effie was not a rich woman. Her income, derived from investments she had made while running an interior decorating shop, had never exceeded $ 200 a month, which she supplemented by selling her apples. But she always managed to help someone poorer. Years passed before I was able to return the money Effie had given me from time to time. She was ill now and had aged rapidly in the last year. “Here, darling,” I said, “is what I owe you.” (3) _____ “Give it back as I gave it to you---a little at a time.” I think she believed there was magic in the slow discharge of a love debt. The simple fact is that I never repaid the whole amount to Effie, for she died a few weeks later. By now, the few dollars Effie gave me have been multiplied many times. But a curious thing began to happen. Whenever I saw a fellow human in financial trouble, I was moved to help him. I can’t afford to do this always, but in the ten years since Effie’s death, I have indirectly repaid my debt to her. (4) _____ At that time, it seemed that my debt would forever go unsettled. So the account can never be marked closed, for Effie’s love will go on in hearts that have never known her. 4

A. Long car journeys are even less pleasant D. You will arrive at your destination fresh and uncrumpled E. You will be utterly exhausted before you are halfway through your journey F. Also, you are invariably faced with numerous options different airlines offer for similar flights. People travelling long distances frequently have to decide whether they would prefer to go by land, sea, or air. Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours. Train compartments soon get cramped and stuffy, with the monotonous rhythm of the wheels clicking on the rails which soon lures you to sleep. _____1_____. At night, when you really wish to go to sleep, you rarely manage to do so, ending up almost exhausted when reaching the destination.\_____2_____, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can, at least, travel fairly safely at high speeds, but with much time spent on roads, few service stations available and too much traffic. By comparison, ferry trips or cruises offer numerous civilized comforts. You can relax on decks, play games, meet interesting people and enjoy good food ——particularly when the sea is calm. If it is not, you are likely to get seasick. Whatever the case, sea journeys take a long time. Relatively few people are prepared to sacrifice holiday time for the pleasure of travelling by sea. Aeroplanes have the reputation of being dangerous and even well-experienced travelers are intimidated by them. They also have the disadvantage of being an expensive form of transport. _____3_____. Travelling at a height of 30,000 feet far above the clouds, and at over 500 miles an hour is an exhilarating experience. You do not have to devise ways of taking your mind off your journey, for an aeroplane gets you to your destination rapidly. The real escapist can watch a film and sip champagne, yet without missing an unusual and breathtaking view of the world .You soar effortlessly over high mountains and deep valleys. You really see the shape of the land. If the landscape is hidden from the view, you can enjoy the extraordinary sight of unbroken cloud plains that stretch out for miles before you, while the sun shines brilliantly in the clear sky. The journey is so smooth that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping. However you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain: “_____4_____.” You will never have to spend the next the few days recovering from a long and arduous journey. 5
B. During the day, sleep comes in snatches C. But nothing can match them for speed and comfort
1:People think so much of them that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general. ____67____ A. Even being good at getting others to fight most efficiently is not being civilized. B. Most people believe those who have conquered the most nations are the greatest. C. However, every year conflicts between countries and nations still claim thousands of lives. D. And not only has it won, but also because it has won, it has been in the right. E. So there has been little time to learn in, but there will be oceans of time in which to learn better. F. The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows. 例3:Nonetheless, doctors and nurses are finding that paying attention to what might be seen as superficial concerns — hair and makeup — has a positive effect on patients, with beauty regimes being bright spots in what can be a dreary journey through radiation and other therapies. ___2___ A. Feeling good about oneself played a very big role in a patient’s recovery. B. Hospitals are forming partnerships with local salons to serve their patients. C. Three more centers are scheduled to open in the United States by the end of this year. D. Because of these perceived benefits, programs focused on cosmetic solutions are spreading. E. The nationwide program has volunteer hairstylists, cosmetologists, wigmakers, etc., who make periodic appearances. In this small, out-of-the-way room, cosmetologists specialize in assisting cancer patients who lose their hair, experience changes to their skin or have breasts surgically removed. 6

表并列:and; also; first, second, third; firstly, secondly, thirdly; first, next, then; in the first place, in the second place; for one thing, for another thing; to begin with, to conclude; either…or…; neither…nor…; not only…but also 表递进:further, furthermore; moreover; what’ s more; in addition 表因果:so; therefore; thus; hence; accordingly; consequently; as a result 表转折与让步:however; nevertheless; though; yet; in spite of; despite; on the contrary; otherwise; while; rather than; even if/though; fortunately 例1:Do not dictate to your author; try to become him. Be his fellow- worker and accomplice. ___2___But if you open your mind as widely as possible, then signs and hints of almost imperceptible (细微的) fineness, from the twist and turn of the first sentences, will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other. C. How can we get the deepest and widest pleasure from what we read? F. If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read. 例2:A generation ago in the US, if you heard a friend talking about having a gig, chances were that your friend was a musician. ___67___ Self-employment, contract or freelance work, temporary jobs- just about anything that isn't full-time- can be described as a gig. B. These temporary workers cannot be categorized into gig workers. C. But the phrase has now evolved to describe different methods of short-term work. D. Most of the gig workers treasure the golden opportunity and regard it as a lifetime job. 3. 1:Self Expression ___5___There are many ways to express thoughts and ideas—music, acting, drawing building, photography. You may find that your child is attracted by one more than another C. We can give kids chances to think about materials in new ways. G. Being able to communicate ideas in a meaningful way is a valuable skill. 例2:Self-esteem is the measurement or the value of how a person knows his worth and its effects are life-changing and dramatic, since it makes up a person’s attitude and outlook towards life. ___67___ But when self-esteem is low, you can either sulk and be sad or be afraid to try out new things or take risks and chances with your love-life, career, relationships and self-improvement. A. Simply put, self-esteem is the fuel that makes you feel important or loved by others. E. When your self-esteem is high, you are less likely to be affected by these situations. 7
例3:Until now, predicting exactly what makes a bestseller was somewhat of a mystery, yet researchers from New York claim to have created an algorithm (算法) to do just that. By analyzing the words used in classic books, the algorithm was able to correctly predict which books were bestsellers, and which were less successful, in 84 percent of cases. ___67___ E. Overall, they found that successful books contained a high number of nouns and adjectives and plenty of quotes. F. The most popular books also featured more verbs relating to “thought-processing” such as “recognized” and “remembered”. 4. (1):It doesn’t matter which productivity bird represents your work style. (70)_______ It depends on your environment and energy levels. Do you have the drive to get up early or stay up late? While others are dreaming, make your dreams real. B. Many believe being night owls is better. E. They both can work. 例子(2)You have the same amount of time each day as everyone else. If you want to reach your goals and dreams you have to be willing to pay the price. (67)______Sometimes it is your time. Sometimes it is money. And sometimes it is sleep. One of the best times to get ahead and be”in the zone”is when everyone else is sleeping. Get up early. Or stay up late. Those are your choices. C. Not watching mindless TV or endlessly surfing the Net. D. That sacrifice often involves giving up something. 例子(3)For a while, the gig trend was seen as a temporary response to the Great Recession. They may enjoy work-hour flexibility that’s perfect for their family or education needs. And they may even find they good at being their own boss. D.They hoped that “permanent” hiring would return as the overall economy recovered. B. These temporary workers cannot be categorized into gig workers. 8

(1)(68)_______ Ask yourself what problem the audience wants to solve, and talk about that problem first. “Then and only then, talk about what you are good at as the solution to that problem,” says Morgan. “Audiences start off by asking why. Why am I here? Why should I care? If you answer those questions early, then they’ll ask how. Your job is to answer the why question first and then address the how.” A. Be relevant to your audience C. Focus on one theme, and eliminate everything else. 例子(2)It is possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight, so do savages; so to be good at fighting is to be good in the way an animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized. ____68_______. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some ways of settling their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off greater number of the other side, and then saying that the side which has killed most has won. A. Even being good at getting others to fight most efficiently is not being civilized. C. However, every year conflicts between countries and nations still claim thousands of lives. 例子(3)For those with green forgers, the pleasure of gardening comes from getting out in the fresh air, in all weathers and communing with nature--even if there are a few too many worms! It can also be seen as a sort of digital-detox--time away from technology. __68___ F. Some experts actually believe that getting outside to dig and plant things acts as a \D. A. He found the bacterium had a similar effect on the mice as an anti-depressive drug might B. Soil bacteria not only benefit people but also benefit animals C. Gardening can also be used as a way of treating addiction D. It's no wonder some of us turn to gardening as a form of therapy E. Alcohol can make people behave peculiarly and dangerously in gardening F. Some experts actually believe that getting outside to dig and plant things acts as a \ The Good of Gardening Do you have a hobby that helps you relax and unwind? For some people, there is no better way to relieve pressure than spending time in the garden. This small private area of green space can be their place of calm. ___67____. A survey conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society, found that 82% of people in the UK said that gardening makes them happier. It also found that 70% of them, given the choice, would prefer to spend their working day in the garden with just 9% opting for an office. For those with green forgers, the pleasure of gardening comes from getting out in the fresh air, in all weathers and communing with nature--even if there are a few too many worms! It can also be seen as a sort of digital-detox--time away from technology. __68___ Dr Christopher Lowry, a neuroscientist at the University of Colorado, injected a bacterium commonly found in soil into mice to see what affection this would have on them.____69___. When we dig in soil we absorb this bacterium through our lungs or cuts in our skin, so Dr Lowry concluded that since the mice seemed happier when treated with soil bacteria, it's likely we would be, too. ___70_____. There’s evidence that recovering alcoholics who have been given the opportunity to plant, grow, and even sell their produce, have managed to stop their addictive habits. Scot Stephenson, for example, got dismissed from school and started a vocational qualification in gardening. He says, “I got my NVQ level 2 which is my first qualification and enjoyed it ever since.” Whatever the reason, there are many therapeutic benefits to getting your hands dirty, doing some physical 10

hard work and then watching your garden grow. Does this sound like your idea of fun? 二. A. Many of us just drive on as we have right of way. B. It is this social aspect that makes many people suspicious about driverless cars. C. The latest robot cars are able to make the necessary eye contact with a human driver. D. Humans are always suspicious about new technologies of which they have little experience. E. Even many people with suspicion accept that emotionless AVs could cause fewer accidents than we humans. F. These safety-first robot cars could become victims of their own politeness and end up being bullied, ignored by aggressive, impatient humans. Would You Bully (欺负) a Driverless Car or Show It Respect? Say you’re driving down a two-way street and there’s a truck unloading a delivery in the opposite lane. The oncoming traffic needs to pull out into your lane to overtake. What do you do? ____67____ Eventually one of us feels charitable and slows down to allow the oncoming car to overtake and giver permission with a quick flash of headlights or a wave of the hand. But what if the car waiting patiently behind the parked truck is a driverless or autonomous vehicle (AV)? Will this robot car be able to understand what you mean when you flash your lights or wave your hands? Its sensors could decide that it’s only safe to overtake when there’s no oncoming traffic at all. On a busy road at school home time, this may be never, leading to increasingly angry drivers queuing behind. ____68____ This is one of the conclusions to be drawn from research carried out by Dr. Chris Tennant of the psychological 11
and behavioural science department at the London School of Economics. His Europe-wide survey finds that nearly two-thirds of drivers think machines won’t have enough common sense to interact with human drivers, and more than two-fifths think a robot car would remain stuck behind our assumed parked truck for a long time. Driving isn’t just about technology and engineering, it’s about human interactions and psychology. The road is a social space. ____69____ “If you view the road as a social space, you will consciously negotiate your journey with other drivers. People who like that negotiation process appear to feel less comfortable engaging with AVs than human drivers,” say Mr. Tennant in his report. ____70____ A statistic often trotted out (动不动就搬出) is that human error is responsible for more than 90% of accidents, with our tendency to road anger, tiredness and lack of concentration. A Section C Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. A. They can be endlessly improved as we better understand how to treat animals. B. Experts have broken fresh ground in breeding captive animals 12

C. Yet critics suggest that animals should not be kept in cage D. Studies have clearly shown that captive animals will live longer and be more active kept in an environment close to their native surroundings E. This, therefore, puts sever pressure on the legs and feet of these giants and causes long-lasting injury in some captive animals. F. Evidences indicate that some animals depend greatly on surroundings. Are zoos bad for animals ? Zoos have existed since ancient times and were features of the great courts of Egypt and China. The display of unusual animals form foreign countries was, for a long time, a show of wealth and power. Today, zoos focus on the preservation of animals species and the education of the public. __67___ Some animals are distinctly unsuited for life in a zoo, however noble the aims of the organization. Keeping elephant in captivity (囚禁) has long caused argument among animals rights activists. Elephant in the wild wander constantly, covering a wide territory on a daily basis. In captivity, they have no choice but to stand still for long periods of time. ___68____. Yet elephants are a threatened species in their native environments and are heavily caught for ivory(象牙),leather and meat illegally. To protect the species form the wild due to injury or abandonment. ___69___. The chances are, if a zoo has nothing but cement floors and metal enclosures, the animals will not do as well. Many famous zoos now construct enclosures allowing animals freedom of movement and native vegetation. Some zoos have even begun housing species of animals together that normally interact in the wild, such as certain types of monkeys. Zoos are not a perfect solution for preservation.____70___. They are undeniably helpful in repopulating declining animal species and encouraging a preservationist outlook, but they are unquestionably primary in their treatment of some animals. Hopefully, animal activists and zoo advocates will continue to work together, finding ways to create the best environment for captive animals in breeding and repopulation efforts. B A. You're only as smart as your experience, and if you don’t challenge yourself past your 13
comfort zone-you are setting limits on your potential that not be there. B. Tolerance for various people leads to an enjoyable journey. C. You'll enhance your understanding of all kinds of people, become more open-minded in general and heighten your appreciation for diversity. D. Even if you're timid, learn the basics before your trip to a foreign country. E. You may learn the local language to give them a good impression. F. To take this a step further, inquire about how a dish you like is cooked. Travel Makes You Smarter When we say travel makes you 'smarter', we don't mean you're all of a sudden going to become a genius. But traveling will certainly make you more worldly, force you to think in different ways and help you to embrace unique cultural practices, all of which will ultimately create more neurological connections in your brain, making you quicker to react, think through logic and work through problem solving more efficiently. _____1____ Both new experiences and doing things you already know—the hard way—will keep your cognitive skills sharp. You Meet New People As you go through life, you're going to meet great people, inspiring people, kind people and strange people. You're also going to meet people you don't like. Every person you meet has a story and a reason why they are who they are. Always remember that before you pass judgment. _______2______ Expand Your Palate Traveling will allow you to sample a wide array of new foods and beverages. The best advice I can give you, (unless you're allergic) is to try them. Try the most obscure item on the menu. In any case, you're exposing your brain to new and flavors. _______3_______When you get home, show your friends and teach your children. Spread good culture. Learn New Languages Learning a new language is not easy and it's not something you're going to pick up on a short trip abroad. However, locals generally really appreciate it when a tourist makes an honest attempt to speak their language._______4______When you get there, expand on them. Learning to ask for directions, using 'please' and definitely 'thank you', will give a native a better first impression. Open Your Mind to New Experiences You'll never know until you try, and you never know what positive outcome it may yield. What if that experience leads you to a business idea that changes the world for the better? Go for it. Be Inspired The most crucial thing to keep in mind when you travel is to live in the moment. If you see something that 14

makes your draw drop, take it in for a few minutes—before you pull out your camera. Be here right now. Ultimately, this will allow you to be inspired. Whether it's by the people you meet while you're abroad, or by something you see. That inspiration can only make you a happier, progressively smarter person.
