The 70-year-old Dutch Sinologist recalled his half-century-long romance with Chinese culture during a recent visit to Beijing. As a child, the vivid descriptions of China in Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winner Pearl S.Buck’s books sparked Idema’s interest in the country. He later read classic Chinese literature and spent whole days pouring through works at the National Library of China.

While many other experts on China focused on the country’s economic transformation,Idema continued to study traditional Chinese literature.“There were scholars studying law, religion and society, but not traditional Chinese literature,w hich was my personal interest,” Idema explains.

Finding reference books for his research, especially regional publications, used to be a huge challenge, and Idema used to spend a lot of time collecting books and other materials during visits to China. Now it is much more convenient with the Internet.

Idema usually chooses less-known subjects for his research and tries to get first-hand materials. In recent years,he has devoted himself to translating Chinese folk tales and writing about Chinese folk society and folk culture.

The term “helicopter parents” refers to “a style of parents who are over focused on their children”.

Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age 1,homework at age 8,college application at age 18,employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30,40 or even older. They constantly shadow the child, always directing his

behavior,allowing him zero alone time.

Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons.Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their child’s life in an attempt to protect them.Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate with their own children. When parents see other overinvolved parents,it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they don’t involve themselves in their children’s lives, they are bad parents.

The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen.Mary called the landlord (房东) to install an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations(协商),her mother rushed in and d emanded action.“I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated,” says Mary.

Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are actually damaging their child’s basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. They’re winning the battle, but actually losing the war.

4.What’s the purpose of helicopter parents’ overparenting?

A.To do something good for their children.

B.To make their children not ignored.

C.To help their children find a good job.

D.To get rid of the pressure from other parents.

5.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Children who have helicopter parents live a hard life.

B.Helicopter parenting only happens to very young children.

C.Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems.

D.Helicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run.

6.What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A.The bad effects of helicopter parenting.

B.How we can avoid being helicopter parents.

C.Different opinions about helicopter parenting.

D.The reasons for the development of helicopter parents.

7.What is the author’s attitude towards “helicopter parenting”?

A.Uninterested.

B.Objective.

C.Positive.

D.Disapproving.

Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite.

The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire.

Community (社区) service is important for many reasons.Taking part and volunteering teaches sympathy and understanding. One of my favorite things about it is that there are opportunities and choices right in your very neighborhood.

When I was younger I volunteered for a nearby animal shelter. At first I didn’t know many people there and wasn’t very fa4a6bf683c758f5f61fb7360b4c2e3f572725eater,as I got to know the animals and staff members I learned to enjoy my time there. It was a very rewarding experience and I got to do many things I wouldn’t have had an opportunity to do otherwise.

Sometimes when I was there I would see other kids taking part. Most of them were volunteering because they needed service hours for school. These kids sometimes just sat around waiting for their time to pass. But there were also others, who had apparently enjoyed their experiences, and wanted to do more afterwards.

Not only is community service fun and rewarding, but it also looks great on a resume (简历) or college application.Sometimes community service is even required for high school fa4a6bf683c758f5f61fb7360b4c2e3f572725east year in my life skills class we were asked to write a paper about whether we thought requiring students at a university to complete 75 hours of community service was a good idea.I wrote,“I don’t think that is too much as long as the students are given enough time and a variety or choices.”

As I move through life I will always be involved in community service, not just because it is important but also because it is something I enjoy and look forward to.So maybe it is the right time you should go out, volunteer your time and make a

difference, even if your reward is only a nod or smile.

8.The writer began to enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter when he .

A.realized the importance of community service

B.witnessed some students wasting their time

C.got inspired by the enthusiastic volunteers

D.adjusted himself to the new environment

9.What might be the writer’s attitude to the 75-hour community service required for a university student?

A.Cautious.

B.Approving.

C.Unconcerned.

D.Doubtful.

10.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To introduce a growing trend of volunteering.

B.To reflect on one of his volunteer experiences.

C.To advocate participating in community service.

D.To make the benefits of community service known.

Last year in my life skills class we were asked to write a paper about whether we thought requiring students at a university to complete 75 hours of community service was a good idea.

该句中的主要部分是we were asked to write a paper,而Last year是时间状语,in my life skills class是地点状语,whether we thought requiring students at a university to complete 75 hours of community service was a good idea是about后面的宾语从句。
