阅读下列短文,然后根据短文的内容从每小题的四个选择项中选出最佳的一项。

Passage One

How can English teachers accelerate the language learning of their students? One way is to teach students how to learn more effectively and efficiently. Learning strategies are ―procedures or techniques that learners can use to facilitate a learning task.‖ Instructing students of English in learning strategies can help them become better learners. In addition, skill in using learning strategies assists students in becoming independent, confident learners. Finally, students become more motivated as they begin to understand the relationship between their use of strategies and success in learning English.

Students need to develop an awareness of the learning process and strategies that lead to success. Students who reflect on their own thinking are more likely to engage in planning how to proceed with a learning task, monitoring their own performance on an ongoing basis, finding solutions to problems encountered, and evaluating themselves upon task completion. These activities may be difficult for students accustomed to having a teacher who solves all their learning problems and is the sole judge of their progress.

Teachers need to encourage students to rely more on themselves. Because learning strategies are mental processes with few observable manifestations, teachers need to find ways to make the strategies as concrete as possible. When students are able to use the strategies their teachers have taught them, and to do so without prompting, then they need to explore new strategies, new applications, and new opportunities for self-regulated learning.

51. Better learning strategies can make language learning more .

Passage Two

During sleep, the fatigue (疲劳) of the body disappears and recuperation (恢复) begins. The tired mind gathers new energy. Once awake, the memory improves, and annoyance and problems are seen in a better perspective.

Some adults require little sleep; others need eight to ten hours in every twenty-four. Infants sleep sixteen to eighteen hours daily and, as they grow older, the amount gradually diminishes. Young students may need twelve hours; university students may need ten. A worker with a physically demanding job may also need ten, whereas an executive worker under great pressure may manage on six to eight. Many famous people are reputed to have required little sleep. Napoleon, Thomas Edison and Charles Darwin apparently averaged only four to six hours a night.

Whatever your individual need, you can be sure that by the age of thirty you will have slept for a total of more than twelve years. By that age you will also have developed a sleep routine: a favorite hour, a favorite bed, a favorite position, and a formula you need to follow in order to rest comfortably.

Investigators have tried to find out how long a person can go without sleep. Several people have reached more than 115 hours-nearly five days, whereas animals kept awake for from five to eight days have died of exhaustion. The limit for human beings is probably about a week.

56. According to the passage, the sleeping routine will be built at the age of .

A) 10 B) 20 C) 30 D) 40

A) sleep is important for good mental and physical healthB) a light sleep is as restful as a deep sleep

A) they were famous great men B) they were executive workers

C) they were intelligent people D) they were involved in mentally demanding work

60. From animal experiments, we can conclude that the final result of the lack of sleep is probably .

A) mental illness B) mental breakdown C) susceptibility to illness D) death

Passage Three

You have been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give you a blood transfusion because you

大学英语

lost a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special care must be taken in selecting new blood for you. If the blood is too different from your own, the transfusion could kill you.

There are four basic types of blood: A, B, AB, and O. A simple test can indicate a person’s blood type, which, like hair color and height, is inherited from parents.

Because of substances contained in each type, the four groups must be transfused carefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B can’t receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can give to any other group; hence, it is often called the universal donor. For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient. However, because so many reactions can occur in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt or plasma (liquid) until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank of a hospital. In this way, it is possible to avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion.

There is a relationship between your blood type and your nationality. Among Europeans and people of European ancestry, about 42 percent have type A while 45 percent have type O. The rarest is type AB. Other races have different percentages. For example, some American Indian groups have nearly 100 percent type O.

61. A good title for this passage is .

A) Getting Blood and Plasma B) Special Blood Types

C) Human Blood Types D) The Blood Bank of a Hospital

62. The word ―hence‖ in line 9 means .

64. The purpose of using salt and plasma before a blood transfusion is to allow time .

A) to test the reactions to the transfusion

B) for matching the blood to be transfused with the patient’s blood

C) for the blood to be delivered from the blood bank

D) to select a new type of blood for the patient

65. Most Europeans have blood type .

A) A B) B C) O D) A or O

In England, Christmas is the most important of all the ―Bank Holidays‖ in the year. Two important things help to set this holiday apart from all others: the custom of giving gifts and the habit of spending it with the family.

We are reminded of Christmas many weeks before the event. In the shops the special Christmas displays appear. In the shopping centers of very large towns decorations put up in the streets. Thousands of people flock into the center of the town to see the decorations. Everywhere one turns, one knows that Christmas is coming again.

The custom of giving presents to one’s family and friends is a very pleasant one so long as one remembers that it is the spirit behind the gift which matters most and not the gift itself. And how good it is at Christmas to return to the family home and meet parents, grandparents and as many aunts, uncles and cousins as can be accommodated.

On Christmas Eve, the traditional ritual of hanging up a stocking at the foot of the bed is performed by millions of excited children. During the day the Christmas tree will have been dressed. All is now ready for the great morning, which comes round soon enough, in spite of the efforts of many of the young children to stay awake until Santa Claus (or Father Christmas, as some call him ) steals in to deliver the presents they have asked him for.

A new book by a French journalist called Barley, has the title Man and Animals. It tells the long history of the relationship that human begins have with animals. It shows that men can often be very cruel, but that sometimes men treat animals better than they treat other people.

In ancient Egypt, people believed that the cat was a god. When a cat died, its owners showed their sadness by the strange habit of shaving their eyebrows off! More recently, in the last century in fact, the famous English writer Charles Dickens had a cat who was very fond of him. The cat didn’t like to see Dickens working too hard. At night, when the cat wanted to say ―Stop writing!‖ to his master, he often put out Dickens’s candle with his paw! Today, the dog is one of our favorite animals. But even 9,000 years ago, the Greeks and Persians had dogs as pets (that is, dogs who lived with them in their homes). However, when animals become pets, it is a smaller animal with a small brain. Rabbits, for example, which live as pets in a garden, in wooden box (called a hutch) are much less intelligent than their wild cousins. Of course, man doesn’t always keep animals for pleasure. Many animals have to work for their masters, like the teams of husky dogs which still work in Antarctica.

After a year of great hardship, the colonists wanted to give thanks to God for their first harvest. They invited their Indian friends to join them in a big feast. Today the holiday is still celebrated as a day for giving thanks. But it wasn’t a regular national holiday until President Lincoln declared that the last Thursday in November would thereafter be Thanksgiving Day in 1863. It is a day of family reunion and it is customary to invite friends to share the

But the question is why they are so popular? Lots of other countries have royal families too. What’s so special about Britain’s? The following are some important factors.

remembered taking it out to pay for the taxi, so I knew I had it with me just before I walked into the restaurant. I wondered if it was possible that it could have slipped out of my pocket while I was eating dinner. Thinking about that possibility, I turned and walked back to the table where I had been sitting. Unfortunately, there were several people sitting at the table at the time, so I called a waiter and explained to him that my wallet had fallen out of my pocket while I was sitting at the table a few minutes earlier. I had the waiter go over to the table to see if my wallet was on the floor. While the waiter was looking for it, the manager of the restaurant came up to me and asked me if anything was wrong. I didn’t want to get a lot of people involved in the problem, but I knew I had to get the wallet back. I told the manager what had happened. He had me describe the wallet to him, and then he insisted that I report the missing wallet to the police. I told him that I didn’t particularly want to get the police involved in it; besides, I was in a hurry because I had an appointment with my doctor in just a few minutes. I explained to him that my biggest worry at the moment was how I was going to pay the check. He told me not to worry about that. He had me write down my name and address, and he said he would send me a bill.
