I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓约) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here’s what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion (提升), the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure (休闲), it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.

I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion (激情) as it ought to be lived.

61.The best title of this passage probably is . A.Love your friends B.Live a real life C.Don’t waste time D.Be a good mother and wife 62.How did the author form her view of life ? A.Through social experience. B.By learning from her friends. C.Through an unfortunate experience. D.From her children and husband.

63.By the underlined sentence ―It is so easy to exist instead of to live‖ in the fifth paragraph, the

author really means that people tend to . A.make a living rather than live a real life B.work rather than enjoy life C.waste a lot in life D.forget the most important lessons in life 64.What’s the author’s attitude toward work ?

A.Do it well to serve others.

B.Earn enough money to make life better. C.Try your best to get higher position and pay. D.Don’t let it affect your real life.

65.It can be inferred from the passage that . A.the author is a success in personal life B.the author didn’t try her best to work well

C.the author spent all her time caring for her children D.the author likes traveling very much

Scientists smiled as the three young whales swam through the ocean, turning over, jumping, and racing one another in circles around the ship. After spending seven months in a 60,000 gallon (228,000-liter) pool at the New England Aquarium(水族馆)in Boston, Mass, the whales were now free.

The pilot whales, named Notch Small, and Tag, had been staying at the pool ever since they were saved after running aground on a Cape Cod beach in Massachusetts last December. Although about 60 other whales died during that running aground the three young whales were saved and

nursed back to health. Last June, the whales were freed from a ship about 120 miles (152 kilometers) off the coast of Massachusetts. When the three whales finally swam away from the ship. scientists on board cheered. The event, say the biologists, marked the first time that a group of whales has been saved, cared for , and freed back into the wild.

No one knows what causes whales to run aground. Some biologists think that gently sloping beaches may upset the whales’ sonar systems(声纳系统). Whales find schools of fish and other objects by bouncing sonar waves off the objects. When a whale approaches a gently sloping beach, the sonar waves may bounce away(反弹)from the whale instead of toward it. The whale may end up in shallow water and run aground.

Other experts think a leader of a group of whales becomes ill and beaches itself. Because whales often band together, other whales soon follow, running aground as well.

66.After spending seven months in a pool the pilot whales, named Notch. Small and Tag, were

freed in . A.autumn B.spring C.winter D.summer

67.The scientists in saving, caring for and releasing into the wild any grounded

whales before this event. A.had been successful B.had never been successful C.had even been successful D.had once been successful

68.Some scientists believe that once the leading whale in a group falls ill and runs aground, . A.others may band together B.others may fall ill, too. C.others will not care for it and run away D.others will follow and beach themselves, too.

69.When a whale approaches a gently sloping beach, . A.it may be able to send out sonar waves

B.its sonar waves may not bounce back to it C.its sonar waves may disappear D.its sonar waves become stronger

70.The underlined words band together in the last Paragraph means . A.unite in a group B.bite together C.fight together D.dance together

D

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, ―So, how have you been?‖ And the boy-who could not have been more than seven or eight years old, replied, ―Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed(压抑的)lately.‖

This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were ―depressed‖ until we were in high school.

The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.

Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?

Human development is based not only on innate(天生的) biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.

In the last 30 years, however, a secret – revelation (揭示) machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information, and indiscriminately (不加区分地), to all viewers alike, whether children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.

Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practices. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

71.According to the author, feeling depressed is . A.a sure sign of a psychological problem in a child B.an unavoidable case of children’s mental development C.something hardly to be expected in a young child D.a mental sale present in all humans, including children

72.Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world . A.through contact with society

B.naturally and by biological instinct

C.gradually and under guidance

D.through exposure to social information

73.The phenomenon that today’s children seem adult like is considered by the author to . A.the widespread influence of television B.the poor arrangement of teaching content C.the fast pace of human intellectual development D.the constantly rising standard of living

74.Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children? A.It enables children to gain more social information. B.It develops children’s interest in reading and writing. C.It helps children to memorize and practice more. D.It can control what children are to learn.

75.What does the author think of the change in today’s children? A.He feels amused by their premature(过早的)behavior. B.He thinks it is a phenomenon worthy of note. C.He considers it a positive development. D.He seems to be upset about it.

第Ⅱ卷(共45分)

注意事项:

1.用钢笔或圆珠笔直接答在试卷上;

Speaking of what sort of smartness is most desirable in human conduct, a friend of mine has this to say: Real smartness must be something that can be practised repeatedly and infinitely. Then, he goes on to relate this event: In one European country there resided some Lebanese. Upon learning that ambulance rides there are provided free to patients in emergency cases, they rented an apartment near a hospital. Each time they wanted to go home, they just pretended to be sick, calling for an ambulance. On arrival at the hospital, they said now that they felt much better and had no need of any treatment. The next moment saw them leaving, safe and sound, to their apartment.

Their ―being - clever‖ affords them only short – lived pleasure and joy; it could not be practised repeatedly, still less infinitely. Such smartness is based on ―too clever to be wise‖. Once seen through, they will lose the benefits they profited by playing dirty tricks. They will suffer the impairment of their own image and reputation as well as that of those who are tied with them by blood or by common interests.

When a person has done something to the discredit of one’s own image and reputation, it will

surely involve others related to him in one way or another. Among those inflicted most by what folly (愚蠢) he may have done are those who, to him, have been close in relations and dear in sentiment.

Additionally, whether one’s act is wise or unwise, rather the summit of wisdom, depends on the result of the act; if , then the more often he does it, the better will he be believed. While repeating that act, he is not only earning himself an admirable image but also contributing to the fine impression and reputation of his relatives, his friends, his hometown and his motherland. 76.What does the passage mainly discuss? (within 10 words)

77.Please fill in the blank in the last paragraph with proper words or phrase to complete the

sentence. (within 10 words)

78.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

People that have ruined their own images not only hurt themselves but will involve their

relatives or friends.

79.How would the telephone operators react to a Lebanese voice calling for an ambulance from

then on? (within 10 words)

80.Translate the underlined sentence in the last paragraph into Chinese.

And a piece of bread, if I get hungry, with butter and jam on it. Sometimes I'll have eggs, and sometimes I'll just have bread with cream cheese and jam. And that's my basic breakfast. My typical lunch is a sandwich either chicken or hot dogs with cheese and tomatoes. Sometimes I have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, followed by a piece of fruit again, and I love peach very much. As for dinner times, that's where I have my big meal and I love steak or hamburgers, anything that has meat in it. I love chicken, and then usually for a side I'll have such things as potatoes with a vegetable or the vegetables like cabbage I love. (Text 9)

M: Ah, Maria, I wanted to see you, um…did I tell you that we’re starting up English classes again? W: Oh, are you? Great, good. Where?

M: Er…in the training center, hopefully. We’re getting Mr. Robert in again. So could you tell your

people and let me have a list of names by…um…let’s say Wednesday?

W: Yes, yes…um…Last time there was a bit of misunderstanding about the books they

needed…um…who was going to pay for them?

M: Oh, really? Well, no problem this time, we’ll provide the books. But they will have to do some

homework outside work, make sure they realize that. Um…or else there’ll probably be some problems. Er…there’ll be two classes. But there will be a limit in each of the classes of …probably about twelve.

W: Oh, really? A limit of twelve? Ah, well, What shall we do if there are more people wanting to

come? I mean, I can think of at least eight just in my department alone. Um…how will you decide who can attend?

M: Er…mm, good point. We’ll think about that. W: OK, well, how about running another class? (Text 10)

Mary Kingsley, traveler and writer, born in London on 13th October 1862, was the only daughter and eldest child of Dr George Henry Kingsley and his wife, Mary Bailey.

Her parents removed to Highgate in 1863, soon after her birth, and there she passed her first sixteen years. She was not sent to school or college, but read widely, and in fact had a world of her own among the old books of travel, natural history, works on science, country sport and novels, which she found on her father’s shelves. The family led a retired life, and Mary grew up a shy, rather silent girl, disliking social gatherings.

Her father was an eager traveler with strong scientific interests. These his daughter fully shared. She was fond of natural history, especially of her father’s favorite study of fish and their ways. She learned German, but not French, which she later regretted.
