High school could be a scary time for everyone. The school seems bigger; there are more kids and it’s a totally new environment. In fact, it isn’t that bad.

High school is a lot like middle school after a while. The first day of course is always scary, and the first day of middle school must have been the same. Of course, the first few days you might get lost while looking for your classes but after a while, what seemed to be a large school really isn’t.

One thing that’s really cool about high school is that there are so many more classes you can take. If you happen to like art, there are many art classes. In addition, there are other classes that weren’t available in middle school like photography or psychology.

In high school, there are a lot of things that are similar to how middle school was but at the same time, there are other opportunities available as well. There are more clubs, sports, and other activities you can join in.

You’re able to join in these activities and make new friends with kids with the same interest as you. These activities also give you a chance to learn something you never had the opportunity to learn before.

High school has something for everyone. You just have to decide what to take part in. but there’s one thing that’s certain that you’re going to have just as much fun in high school as you

did in middle school. And if middle school wasn’t that great for you, high school is a chance to make up for it.

High school isn’t just about having fun though. You have to be responsible while you’re growing up. Teachers aren’t going to chase (催促) you up to do your homework. 56. The passage is mainly about __________.

A. high school life

B. how to take art classes

D. how to make new friends in high school

C. the fun side of high school life

57. In the author’s opinion, high school life __________.

A. is a scary time for everyone C. is the same as middle school life

B. is full of fun without any worries D. is as much fun as middle school life

58. It can be inferred that you can do the following things in high school EXCEPT __________.

A. making more friends B. taking photography classes C. getting lost while looking for classes

D. ignoring your homework until your teacher reminds you

59. The article is probably taken from __________.

A. a travel magazine

B. a book review D. a film poster B

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant

B. Grandparents Day. D. Auction.

relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How you like it?” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.” But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College, “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-old, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

63. The underlined word gulf in Para. 3 most probably means _______. A. interest

B. distance

C. difference

D. separation

64. Which of the following show that the generation gap is disappearing? A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities. B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities. C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs. D. Parents share more interests with their children. 65. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _____. A. more confusion among parents

B. new equality between parents and children C. less respect for parents from children

D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents 66. The purpose of the passage is to _____.

A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with B. discuss the development of the parent-child relationship C. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship D. compare today’s parent-child relationship with that in the past

D

As prices and building costs keep rising, the “do-it-yourself” (DIY) trend (趋势) in the U.S. continues to grow. “We needed furniture for our living room, ” says John Ross, “and we just didn’t have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $ 280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.

Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $ 420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I’ve finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.”

John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it-yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don’t have time to take a course, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself.

67. We can learn from the text that many newly married people _____.

A. find it hard to pay for what they need B. have to learn to make their own furniture C. take DIY courses run by the government D. seldom go to a department store to buy things

68. John and his wife went evening classes to learn how to _____.

A. run a DIY shop C. save time and money

B. make or repair things D. improve the quality of life

69. Jim Hatfield decided to become a do-it-yourselfer when ____.

A. his car repairs cost too much B. the car repair class was not helpful C. he could no possible do two jobs D. he had to raise the children all by himself

70. What would be the best title for the text?

A. The Joy of DIY B. You Can Do It Too!

C. Welcome to Our DIY Course! D. Ross and Hatfield: Believers in DIY.

Are you tired of the same old schedule on Mother’s Day? Well, here are some new ideas to help

you enjoy that special day with your mother.

While it seems almost a tradition to take your mother out for dinner on Mother’s Day, perhaps this year you could try something else. You could invite her to a restaurant before or after the actual day. This way you don’t have to fight the crowds, and the prices will be lower.

Take your mother out for a picnic lunch if the weather is nice. You and she can enjoy the cool breeze under the shade of a tree while having a nice meal that you have made for her. Be sure to pack some of her favorite foods.

Another idea would be to invite your mother to go bowling(打保龄球). Even if she has never bowled in her life, trying something new is always interesting.

You could treat her to a movie she is dying to see, and make sure you buy her all the popcorn and candies she can eat. If you are a male, the chances are you won’t like the movie she wants to see, so instead you could go to the mall and get your picture taken with your mother, which she can proudly display in her house.

Take her to a spa on Mother’s Day. She has been working so hard and needs a way to release her stress.

If she doesn’t want to go to a spa, buy her special soaps and oils so she can relax herself in her own tub. There are various types of soaps and oils with delicious flavors available. You could also buy her some scented (芬芳的) candles that she could light by her tub to make the atmosphere peaceful.

No matter what you choose, make sure you do something special for the woman who took care of you for so long.

Should students make friends on line? People have different opinions on this. Some students say yes. They express their reasons as follows. Firstly, the Internet can help them make various friends. Secondly, they can express their feelings and thoughts freely. Besides, chatting on line is also helpful for our language study.

However, other students have the opposite view. They have their own reasons. They say making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. In addition, some students get cheated on line.

In my opinion, students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us. / From my point of view, making online friends is not a bad thing if we’re careful enough. Anyway, Internet widens our eyes and enriches our knowledge. However, we shouldn’t spend too much time on it and sometimes be careful with the people we chat with. Only in this way can making online friends be valuable to us.

W: I went to Korea. My grandmother missed me very much. She wanted me to spend my whole winter vacation with her.

M: So did you have a good time there? W: Well, not as good as I expected. M: Why?

W: People there don’t speak English. M: It must be boring to have no one to talk to.
