Abstract.Thisshortpaperisintendedtogiveourreadersabriefin-sightabouttheEightInternationalWorkshoponComputerGraphicsandGeometricModeling-CGGM’2009,heldinBatonRouge,Louisiana(USA),May25-272009asapartoftheICCS’2009generalconference.1

1.1CGGMWorkshopsAimsandScope

ComputerGraphics(CG)andGeometricModelinghavebecometwoofthemostimportantandchallengingareasofComputerScience.TheCGGMworkshopsseekforhigh-qualitypapersdescribingoriginalresearchresultsinthose elds.Topicsoftheworkshopinclude(butnotlimitedto):geometricmodeling,solidmodeling,CAD/CAM,physically-basedmodeling,surfacereconstruction,geo-metricprocessingandCAGD,volumevisualization,virtualavatars,computeranimation,CGinArt,Education,Engineering,EntertainmentandMedicine,renderingtechniques,multimedia,nonphoto-realisticrendering,virtualandaug-mentedreality,virtualenvironments,illuminationmodels,texturemodels,CGandInternet(VRML,Java,X3D,etc.),arti cialintelligenceforCG,CGsoftwareandhardware,CGapplications,CGeducationandnewdirectionsinCG.

1.2CGGMWorkshopsHistory

ThehistoryoftheCGGMworkshopsdatesbacknineyearsago,whensomere-searchersdecidedtoorganizeaseriesofinternationalconferencesonallaspectsofcomputationalscience.The rsteditionofthisannualconferencewasheldinSanFranciscoin2001underthenameofInternationalConferenceonCom-putationalScience,ICCS.ThisyearICCSconferenceisheldinBatonRouge,Louisiana(USA).

AfterICCS’2001,Irealizedthatnospecialeventdevotedtoeithercomputergraphicsorgeometricmodelinghadbeenorganizedatthatconference.Aimingto llthisgap,IproposedaspecialsessiononthesetopicstoICCS’2002or-ganizers.Theirenthusiasticreplyencouragedmetoorganizethe rsteditionofthisworkshop,CGGM’2002.Atotalof81papersfrom21countriesweresubmit-tedtotheworkshop,with35high-qualitypapers nallyacceptedandpublishedbySpringer-Verlag,initsLecturesNotesinComputerScienceseries,vol.2330.Thisgreatsuccessandthepositivefeedbackofauthorsandparticipantsmo-tivatedthatCGGMbecameanannualeventonitsown.Subsequenteditionswereheldasfollows(see[1]fordetails):CGGM’2003inMontreal(Canada),CGGM’2004inKrakow(Poland),CGGM’2005inAtlanta(USA),CGGM’2006inReading(UK),CGGM’2007inBeijing(China)andCGGM’2008againinKrakow(Poland).AllofthemwerepublishedbySpringer-Verlag,initsLectureNotesinComputerScienceseries,volumes2668,3039,3515,3992,4488and5102withatotalof52,24,22,22,20and16contributions,respectively.Inaddition,oneSpecialissuehasbeenpublishedin2004intheFutureGenerationComputerSystems-FGCSjournal[2].AnotherspecialissueonCGGM’2007isavailableonlineandinthewaytobepublishedinprintedformsoon.

2CGGM’2009

ThisyearCGGMhasreceivedatotalof11papersofwhich6havebeenacceptedasfullpapers.Thereaderisreferredto[3]formoreinformationaboutthework-shop.Theworkshopchairwouldliketothanktheauthors,includingthosewhosepaperswerenotaccepted,fortheircontributions.Ialsothankthereferees(seetheCGGM’2009InternationalProgramCommitteeandCGGM’2009Interna-tionalReviewerBoardin[3])fortheirhardworkinreviewingthepapersandmakingconstructivecommentsandsuggestions,whichhavesubstantiallycon-tributedtoimprovingtheworkshop.
