第一卷

第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分60分)

第一节:(共15小题;每小题3分,满分45分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项

A

At a certain time in our lives we consider every place as the possible sites(地点) for a house. I have thus searched the country within a dozen miles of where I live. In imagination I have bought all the farms, one after another, and I knew their prices.

The nearest thing that I came to actual ownership was when I bought the Hollowell place. But before the owner completed the sale with me, his wife changed her mind and wished to keep it, and he offered me additional dollars to return the farm to him. However, I let him keep the additional dollars and sold him the farm for just what I gave for it.

The real attractions of the Hollowell farm to me were its position, being about two miles from the village, half a mile from the nearest neighbor, bounded(相邻) on one side by the river, and separated from the highway by a wide field. The poor condition of the house and fences showed that it hadn’t been used for some time. I remembered from my earliest trip up the river that the house used to be hidden behind a forest area, and I was in a hurry to buy it before the owner finished getting out some rocks, cutting down the apples trees, and clearing away some young trees which had grown up in the fields. I wanted to buy it before he made any more of his improvements. But it turned out as I have said.

I was not really troubled by the loss. I had always had a garden, but I don’t think I was ready for a large farm. I believe that as long as possible it is better to live free and uncommitted(无牵挂的). It makes but little difference whether you own a farm or not. 1. What do we know about the author?

A. He wanted to buy the oldest farm near where he lived. B. He made a study of many farms before buying. C. He made money by buying and selling farms. D. He had the money to buy the best farm in the country. 2. Why did the author decide to buy the Hollowell place? A. It was of good market value. B. It was next to the highway. C. It was in a good position. D. It was behind a nice garden.

3. Why did the author want to buy the farm in a hurry? A. He was afraid the owner might change his mind. B. He hoped to enlarge the forest on the farm. C. He wanted to keep the farm as it was. D. He was eager to become a farm owner.

B

Tom was one of the brightest boys in the year, with supportive parents. But when he was 15 he suddenly stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One of the reasons that made it cool for him not to care about studies was the power of his peer group.

The lack of right male role models in many of their lives---at home and especially in the school environment---means that their peers are the only people they have to judge themselves against.

They don’t see men succeeding in society so it doesn’t happen to them that they could make something of themselves. Without male teachers as a role model, the effect of peer actions and street culture is all-powerful. Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and provide the right role models for them. Teachers need to be trained to stop that but not in front of a child’s peers. You have to do it one to one, because that is when you see the real child.

It’s useless sending a child home if he or she has done wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to watch television or play computer games. Instead, schools should have a special unit where a child who has done wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problems somewhere he can work away from his peers and go home after the other children. 4. Why did Tom give up studying? A. He disliked his teachers.

B. His parents no longer supported him.

C. He thought it was cool for boys of his age not to care about studies. D. There were too many subjects in his secondary school. 5. What seems to have a bad effect on students like Tom? A. Peer groups. B. A special unit.

C. The student judges. D. The home environment. 6. What should schools do to help the problem schoolboys? A. Wait for their change patiently. B. Train leaders of their peer groups. C. Stop the development of street culture. D. Give them lessons in a separate area.

7. A teacher’s work is most effective with a schoolboy when he______. A. is with the boy alone B. teaches the boy a lesson

C. sends the boy home as punishment D. works together with another teacher

C

At Harton College---an English boarding school for boys, there are many rules. Fifteen-year-old Bob Sanders often breaks them.

The boys can go into the town in the afternoon after class. But they must return to the school at six o’clock. One afternoon Bob walked to the town. He looked at the shops and then went to the cinema. After the film, he looked at his watch. It was after eight o’clock. He was a little worried. He walked back to Harton College as fast as possible.

When he arrived, he ran quickly to the main entrance. It was locked. He went round the school building to another door. That one was locked too. He looked up at the window of his dormitory. It was on the third floor. The window was open. But it was quite dark and he could not climb up the wall easily. Then he saw another open window on the ground floor. It was the window of the headmaster’s study.

He looked into the room---no one was there. Bob quickly climbed on to the window and jumped into the room. Just then he heard a noise. Then someone turned on a light in the corridor(走廊). Bob looked around and then hid under the sofa. One minute later, Mr Mannering, the headmaster, came in. He turned on the light on his desk, and sat down on the sofa. Then he opened a book and began to read.

Bob lay under the sofa as quietly as possible. He couldn’t move. The floor was cold and uncomfortable. He looked at the headmaster’s shoes and socks for an hour.

“Why doesn’t he get up and go to bed?” Bob thought.

Mr. Mannering read his book for another hour. Finally, the headmaster closed his book and stood up. He put the book on a shelf and walked towards the door.

“Thank God he didn’t find me under the sofa.” thought Bob. Then Mr Mannering stopped and spoke towards the sofa. “Would you turn off the light when you leave?” He said and left the study.

8. Bob returned to the school more than two hours late because__________. A. he enjoyed himself too much B. he did not catch the bus C. he hated the rules D. he ran into an old friend 9. Bob didn’t go to his dormitory because____________. A. the door was locked B. the window was shut

C. it was quite dark D. the wall was too high for him to climb up 10. It’s obvious that_________. A. the headmaster didn’t notice Bob B. the headmaster found Bob under the sofa

C. the headmaster thought a thief had broken into his study D. there was a third man in the study

11. From this passage we know that the headmaster is________. A. kind B. strict C. wise D. humorous

D

IS IT TIME TO GET MP3?

Your computer has been playing music for years, one CD at a time. Now hundreds of songs can be stored in your PC(personal computer)if they’re in the MP3 format.

What is it?

MP3 compresses music into small computer friendly files. You access MP3 music several ways: Music can be downloaded from websites that have converted vast music libraries into MP3. Or you can prerecord CDs into your PC and convert songs in minutes into MP3. Once MP3 music is on your PC’s hard drive, you can play it through your computer’s speakers, “burn” it onto blank CDs or exchange MP3 files with friends using E-mail.

How much?

Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free. It comes preinstalled on most new computers or can be downloaded from many websites, including MP3.com. Some MP3 sites are free. Just type “MP3 sites ” into any search engine. The popular MP3 players start at around $50 and can hold hundreds of songs.A blank CD on which you can record music costs about a dollar.

Advantages

Mp3 turns your home PC into a tape recorder. Tiny MP3 players are the size of a card, making it easy to take hundreds of songs with you.

Disadvantages

You may find that music at many sites is limited. And some only allow you to listen rather than download offerings. Others let you download music that can’t be copied to MP3 players. And a growing number of new CDs make it impossible to copy songs to a computer. 12. How can you get MP3 music?

A. By turning your home PC into a tape recorder. B. By taking your own music or songs with you. C. By copying songs to a PC through the speakers.

D. By downloading from websites which have converted music libraries into MP3. 13. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

The Chinese Dumpling

The Chinese dumpling, a traditional Chinese food, is a necessity of families in northern China during holidays. Especially in the Spring Festival, every family will make dumplings.

Making dumpling is not a difficult job for most Chinese, but it is really teamwork. Usually all family members will join the work. One or two members make the kneaded dough into small, round and thin pieces, while others put filling into them. Filling and ingredients in dumplings may be different in different families. That is all based on their own taste. Boiled dumplings are common while sometimes people eat steamed ones.

Since the shape of dumpling is similar to ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots Chinese people think of dumpling as a symbol of wealth. Anyhow, the Chinese dumping is a delicious food.
