The Positive and Negative Influence of Social Media in Modern Society With highly developed telecommunication technology and wide spread of the Internet, social media is gaining great popularity and making tremendous changes to human society. Everything has both good and bad sides, so is the prevalence of social media. The development of social media gets every society member much more involved and active in social events and, at the same time, we are getting addicted to it.

Social media have brought great convenience to human society. In the past, we have to wait for the morning paper to know what’s happening on the other end of the world. But now, we can know anything we want by swiping our screen. Before, news was mostly provided by news agencies. It’s a one way transmission. But now, anyone on the network can be an information provider, the transmission of news has become a mutual way. For example, Facebook, one of the most popular social media, have integrated all countries in the world into one whole society. Any news that catches attention can be transmitted into the other end of the world in seconds.Social media provide a platform that enable people interact with each other and reducedistance between them. Peoplecan share pictures and interact with their family or friends, and exchange ideas on certain subject with people who is have the same interest.

Although, social media did improved people’s life, but it also exerted some bad effect on human society. Since everyone could become an information provider, it will be more and more difficult for people to tell a new is true or not. Rumors can spread much faster and make greater harm to the society than that in a traditional way.As people spend large proportion of their time on social media and tend to put all their information on it, information privacy has become a big problem. Nowadays we can get one person’s detail information easily from social media, and it’s dangerous if those information was got by people with bad intentions.

As we can see, social media have brought both benefit and harm to human society. Guidance and management will be needed if we want to maximize its benefits and minimize its harm. The good use of social media requires everyone’s effort.
