I have tried to write a ghost story that won't make you unhappy with yourselves,

with each other, with the seasons, or with me. I hope it haunts your houses pleasantly

Charles Dickens

One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day. The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o'clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.

“Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!”cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge's nephew.

“Bah!”said Scrooge“Humbug(骗人的话)!”

“Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don't mean that, Uncle.” said his nephew. “I do,”said Scrooge.“Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You're poor.”

“OK, then,” replied the nephew cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don't be angry, Uncle!”said his nephew.

“What else can I be?” answered the uncle, “I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What's Christmas time to you? It's a time for paying bills without money. It's a time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying‘Merry Christmas' should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!”

“Uncle! Please don't say that!”said the nephew, “I've always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, and a charitable, happy time. And so, Uncle, Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”

Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded(鼓掌). He realized his mistake very soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.

“One more sound from you, Bob Cratchit,”said Scrooge,“and you'll celebrate

Christmas by losing your job!”

“Don't be angry with him, Uncle. Come and have dinner with us tomorrow.” “No.” said Scrooge.

“I'm sorry you don't want to celebrate Christmas. But I do. So a Merry Christmas, Uncle!”

“Good afternoon!”said Scrooge.

“And a Happy New Year!”said his nephew. “Good afternoon!”said Scrooge again.

His nephew left the room. He stopped to wish Bob a Merry Christmas. And Bob replied, “A Merry Christmas to you, too.” 1. In which season did the story take place?

Reading makes one wise, but many adults seldom read. They say they are too busy to have time to read. Sure. They have work to do. They have families to support. But these are only excuses. The fact is that they haven't got a reading habit. A reading habit isn't something natural. It needs to be trained. And it's never too late to develop a reading habit.

Scientists believe proper books are very important for children to develop a good reading habit. A book in rich colours and with simple patterns(图案)such as lines and circles is a good choice for babies of three months old. When they reach six months, they will become interested in simple story books in rich colours.

When children get old enough to read by themselves, it's necessary to buy books that are both interesting and right for them to understand. Books which are either too easy or too difficult are not good for kids to keep their reading habits.

Only buying books for children isn't enough. For kids, parents are their first teachers. So parents should read books to set an example. Children will follow them. Scientists say imitating the adults is a born skill. And it is the most valuable way for children to learn. This will certainly help them develop a reading habit in the end. 1. According to the writer, many adults seldom read because they________.

A. don't have enough time

B. have to work all the time C. haven't got a reading habit D. have to support the family

2. The underlined word“imitating”means________.

A. copying

B. reading

C. testing

D. missing

3. We can learn from the passage that________.

A. story books are better than books in colours B. a reading habit comes from certain training C. a three-month-old kid likes simple stories D. too easy books help keep a reading habit 三、任务型阅读 (5分)(2017原创)

下面为某校老师所做的一个关于学生课外时间如何学习英语的调查报告,请你根据报告内容完成下列柱状图。

A teacher has done a survey about how students learn English out of class recently. Almost all students read and recite English words. They think vocabulary is the most important for English learning. More than 40 students do a lot of written exercises. Nearly 20 students go over their notes they have taken in class. However, only a few students spend time practicing listening and speaking. In my opinion, listening and speaking are the secrets of becoming a good language learner. We need to do lots of listening and speaking practice, such as watching English movies and listening to English songs. Also, chatting with foreigners can be helpful.
