Queen Victoria was monarch(统治者)of Great Britain from 1837 until her death in 1901. This period is often called the Victorian Age.

Queen Victoria was a stern and serious woman. One reason she was so serious was that she had suffered a great loss. When she was twenty years old, she married a German prince named Albert. Victoria and Albert were deeply in love, and their marriage was extremely happy. In 1861, after they had been married for twenty-one years, Albert died, leaving Queen Victoria heartbroken. For the rest of her life, the lonely Victoria mourned his loss. It was customary in those days for a widow to dress in black for a short time after the death of her husband. But Queen Victoria dressed in black for forty years. And for forty years, as another sign of her grief, she wrote her letters on white paper edged in black.

Even before Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria was known as a very serious woman. She had a strong sense of duty and worked very hard at all her tasks. In her diary she wrote, “I love to be employed; I hate to be idle.” She never forgot that she was Britain’s queen and always acted with great dignity. Victoria had high ideals and moral standards that sometimes made her seem stuffy(保守的). She was also very sure of herself. She always thought that she was right, and she expected everyone to agree with her.

Several interesting American museums tell about health subjects. One is the Doctor Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry. It is at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. That is where the first college in the world to train dentists began. The museum tells about the history of the medical treatment of teeth. Visitors can see some frightening devices that once were used to remove infected(受感染的) teeth. They also can see sets of teeth made of animal bone. They were made for a famous American -- the first President, George Washington.

Most people do not consider a visit to the dentist their idea of a good time. However, the director of the museum says he wanted to make the museum a fun place to visit. He says he also wants to teach visitors about the importance of taking care of their teeth.

Another museum collects devices that help people hear. The Kenneth W. Berger Hearing Aid Museum is at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The museum has more than three-thousand hearing aids from around the world. They include old and strange devices. Some hearing aids were made to look like other objects. That is because in the past many people did not want anyone to know they were wearing a hearing aid. 59. It is common for people to think it uneasy to pay a visit to ____. Listening, really listening, can improve communication and build respect with others. Communication begins by listening and then suggesting that you hear what the person is saying.

This can be recognized by focus or eye contact, body language, and reflective listening. Focus (Eye Contact)—Focus means that you are looking directly at the person speaking and not looking off to one side or continuing to do something else. You are focused on what is being said; the speaker is the center of attention. Listening attentively is essential for positive communication.

Listening Without Interrupting—Does your body acknowledge(承认) that you are listening? Use smiles, nods, and expressions of understanding to communicate to the speaker that you are listening. It is not necessary that you agree or disagree at this time. It is more important for the person speaking to know that his or her words are respected. This strengthens communication.

Reflective Listening—Reflective listening involves hearing the feelings and meanings of the speaker. It is a re-statement (in different words) of what the speaker said. You, in essence, mirror the words of the speaker and rephrase them back to the speaker, checking for accuracy(准确)of understanding. This process affirms the speaker, indicates a respect of the person, and shows that you understand the speaker’s message. Through careful reflection of the speaker’s words, you can make clear the message and build mutual(相互的) understanding. Through reflective listening and the careful exchange of words, we learn that other people have important feelings and opinions which we need to consider. Learning to understand the importance of all ideas, not just our own, can lead to successful resolution of problems and mutual respect.

63. The best way to build respect with others is _____. A. to look directly at the person speaking B. to listen to the speaker attentively C. to interrupt the speaker when necessary

高一英语试题 第( 8 )页 共 11页

D. to use expressions of understanding

64. What strengthens communication with the person speaking? A. Making him or her know that his or her words are respected. B. Expressing agreement or disagreement in time when listening. C. Repeating his or her words from time to time. D. Listening instead of saying anything. 65. Reflective Listening is aimed to _____. A. show you are not absent in mind B. make sure the speaker’s words are correct C. checking for accuracy of understanding D. express your own ideas without delay

In Britain, people have different attitudes to the police. Most people generally appreciate them and the job they do--- although there are certain people who do not believe that the police should have the power that they do.

What does a policeman actually do? It is not an easy job to describe. After all, a policeman has a number of jobs in one. A policeman often has to control traffic, either on foot in the center of a town, or in a police car on the roads. Indeed, in Britain, he might be in the Traffic Police and spend all, or a lot of, his time driving up and down main roads and motorways. A traffic policeman is to help keep the traffic moving, stop speeding motorists and help when there is an accident.

A policeman has to keep peace, too. If there is a fight or some other disturbance, we expect the police to come and restore order. And they often have to deal with situation at great risk to their own safety.

We expect the police to solve crime, of course, so an ordinary policeman, even if he is not a detective, will often have to help look for the arrest crimes.

And who do we call when there is an emergency---an crash, a fire, a road accident, or a robbery? We call the police. So a policeman has to be prepared to face any unpleasant emergency that may happen in the modern world.

The police do an absolutely necessary job, they do it extremely well and I support them, but I do not think that I could ever do the job of a policeman.

A policeman has a number of jobs in one On traffic On order On (1) A policeman spends most time__(3)___on the road to _(4) the traffic. The police are_(5) to restore order, although their own_(6)_ may be challenged. Sometimes, a policeman will act like a _(7)__ to _(8)_ for the criminal. On (2) In _(9)_ of fire/crash/robbery--, police will be called in to_(10)_ with them. 第四节: 书面表达(共1小题,满分20分)

I can improve my lessons with software. Besides, I can collect necessary information from internet, which helps increase my knowledge. Then, it also brings me a lot of fun. I’m fond of computer games and enjoy chatting with friends on line. In fact, I often send e-mails to my friends, telling then about what I think of or feel in my life. I think I can make good use of it and I won’t spend too much time on games.

Deep Springs is an American college. It’s an unusual college. It is high in the White Mountains in California not in a college town. The campus is a collection of old buidings with no beautiful classrooms. The only college-like thing about Deep Springs is its library.

高一英语试题 第( 13 )页 共 11页

Students can study from the 17,000 books 24 hours a day. The library is never crowed as there are only 24 excellent boy students at the college. And there are only 5 professors. These teachers believe in the idea of the college. They are not well paid. In fact their salaries are only about 9,000 dollars a year. The college gives the teachers and students something more important than money. There is no place like Deep Springs. Students are there to learn and they cann’t run away from problems because there is no place to escape to. At most colleges, students can close their books and go to a film, but the students in Deep Springs have completely different activities. They can talk to each other or their teachers. They might go out for a walk in the desert. Deep Springs is far from the world of restaurants and cinemas. There is not even a television set on the campus.
