Step I Greetings and Lead-in

T: Hello, everyone .Glad to be here with in you again. With the development of science and technology, the world is changing day by day. Today we are going to learn Unit 11 scientific achievement Step II Warming up

1. Learn the new words of this part

2. T : Please tell us what scientific achievement you think have changed the

world?

(electricity ,cars, airplanes, telephone, radio, television, the Internet, solar energy, genetic engineering….)

T: Which one do you think is the most significant? Why?

S : I think the electricity is the most significant , because it is a basic part of nature and it is one of our most widely used forms of energy. Step III. Listening

T: The listening material contains two parts. You are going to hear some words said by some famous people at the time when they achieved success.

Look at the chart in exercise 1 at the top of page 2.Listen to the tape to complete the chart.

(Play the tape two times)

.T: Listen to part 2 and complete sentences in exercise2

(Play the tape 2 times and then check the answers) Step IV speaking

1. T: Here are four scientists who want to get money to complete their project. Each scientist will have to introduce his or her project and explain why it is the most important .Now, I will put you in groups of five to have discussion.

T: Look at the exercise in Word Study now. Choose the answer that is closest meaning to the underlined part. Suggested answer: ABCBCABC

Step III Grammar: Word Formation(I)

T: As we all know, learning the rules of Word Formation is one of the ways to enlarge our vocabulary. We can guess the meanings of the words using them without looking up the dictionary. Generally speaking, there are four ways of Word Formation

1.Derivation (在一个单词/词根加上前缀或后缀,构成一个新单词的构

词法)

2.Compounding 合成法(把两个或两个以上的单词合在一起构成一个新

的单词的构 词法 )

3.Conversion 转化法(由一种词类转化为一种或几种词类的构词法) 4.Clipping or Shortening 缩写法

T: Today we will deal with Derivation派生法. If we add an affix (a prefix or a suffix )to a root, we can form a new word. Generally speaking, when a prefix is added to a word , it will change a word in meaning but it will not change its part of speech , some suffixes , when added to words, can change their of parts of speech and a few their meanings and parts of speech.

Derivative 派生词

Private―私人的,私立的,私有的‖,与―公立的,公有的‖相对 Personal―本人的,个人的‖,与―他人代表的‖相对 individual―个体的,个别的‖,与―集体的‖相对

set foot in/on: 进入,踏进

eg. He said he would never set foot in that house again. 他说他永远不再踏进那座房子.

They were excited with joy when they set foot on Chinese soil in late July. 当七月底踏上中国的土地时, 他们兴奋不已

5.He lives Beijing and runs a small company based in Zhong Guancun together with two friends.

1)run: 在本句中表示 ―经营‖

to run sth = to be in charge of sth, manage ―负责某事物; 经营;管理‖

eg.He has no idea of how to run a successful business. 他不知道把企业成功的方法

run 还有‖开办(服务项目,课程等); 举办‖ 的意思

eg. The college runs summer courses for foreign learners of English. 这所学院

为学习英语的外国人开设了暑期课程班 base sth. in/at 把...设在

base sth. on/upon 以...为基础

eg. That bank’s head office is based in London. 那家银行的总部设在伦敦

This story is based on facts. 这个故事是以事实为基础的.

6.Zhongguancun has had a positive effect on business as well as science.

as well as: 前后是两个并列的成分.

1.) 和...一样好

eg. I’m learning French as well as English. 我学英语和法语. 2) 除...之外,还…; 和,

eg. His brother as well as his parents often comes to see him. =Not only his parents but also his brother often comes to see him. 他父母和兄弟经常去看他

7.One of the mottos for the park –― Relying on science, technology, and knowledge to increase economic power‖—make it clear that science and business can and must work together to build the future.

a) make… clear: 表明, 讲清楚

eg. I will make the whole matter clear to you. 我将把整个事情给你讲清楚 . Betty made it clear that she would support Amy. 贝蒂清楚地表明她要支持艾米

b) rely on/upon sb./ sth.: =depend on 指望或依靠某人/某事物

rely on one’s doing/ to do sth. rely on it that… rely on sb. to do sth. rely on one’s doing sth..

e.g. .Nowadays we rely increasingly on computers for help.

现今人们越来越依靠计算机协助工作

I rely on her paying back the money.(=I rely on her to pay back the money.) 我指望她来还钱

You may rely on it that he will come to meet you. 你可以相信他会来看你的

8.As Yufang puts(=say) it: ―We are not making that(=so) much money yet, but we are excited about all the new technology and great ideas that are coming to life in Zhongguancun.‖

as sb. puts it…正如某人所说...

put vt. 表达,表述

eg. I want to know how to put this in French. 我想知道这个用法语怎么说. 9. Not all…… 部分否定

Not 与all, both, every 等连用表部分否定。

eg. All is not lost that is in danger. (谚语)处于危险中并非就是失败。 Step II Exercises
