Although Paris is often considered the city of romance, close to a million adults who call it home are single. Many single people say that France’s capital is one of the most difficult places to meet people. The complaints(抱怨) of this lonely group have inspired a new phenomenon known as “supermarket dating.” At Galerie Lafayette Gourmet, singles can shop for more than just the items on their grocery list. They can look for someone who has blue eyes, brown hair, and is 1.8 meters tall, or whatever may be on their romantic shopping list.

At this Paris location single people of all ages can schedule their shopping for Thursday nights between 6: 30 and 9: 00 P.m. When they walk through the door, they pick up a purple basket to advise that they are looking for love. They try to arrive early because the baskets disappear quickly, and then they have to wait in line for their turn to wander the store aisles(过道).

With purple baskets in hand, shoppers can consider their romantic options(选择) while they

pick out their groceries. When they are ready to pay, they can go to the checkout line for singles who want to chat.

Most of the people who look for love in the supermarket are doubtful of Internet dating. They know that it is easy to embellish(美化) one’s appearance or to lie about one’s age over the Internet. The supermarket, on the other hand, is considered a safe and casual environment in which to meet a potential match. In addition, what one finds in another’s grocery basket can say a thing or two about that person’s character or intentions. Buying pet food can be a man’s way of showing a potential match that he has a sensitive side. Women who fill their baskets with low-fat food show their healthy style of living. These days it’s possible to find much more than food at a grocery store.

56. Which of the following can be inferred but is not clearly stated in the second paragraph? A. The dating supermarket is located in Paris.

B. The dating supermarket is open only on Thursday evenings. C. The dating supermarket has very good business.

D. People looking for love must get a basket of a particular color. 57. How do love shoppers meet one another? A. They go through a special checkout. B. They schedule their meeting in advance. C. They pick out their groceries with great care.

D. They dial the phone numbers on their shopping items.

58. According to the writer, a possible way to win a woman’s heart is to ______. A. pick up a purple basket B. buy pet food C. embellish your appearance D. buy low-fat food

59. Why do the people prefer the supermarket dating to Internet dating?

A. The supermarket dating is more casual. B. The supermarket dating is more convenient.

C. The supermarket dating is less expensive. D. The supermarket dating can be trusted more.

Street art can be found on buildings, sidewalks, street signs and even dustbins from Tokyo to Paris to New York City. This special kind of art can take the form of paintings, sculptures, cloth or even stickers. Street art has become part of a global visual culture. Now, even art museums and galleries are collecting the work of street artists.

It is not easy to provide an exact history of the street art movement. This kind of art has developed in many kinds of ways in places all over the world. Also, because it is illegal to paint public and private property without permission, street artists usually work secretly. This secretive nature of street art and its countless forms make it hard to define(下定义) exactly. And people have different opinions about the movement. Some think street art is a crime and destroys property. But others see this art as a rich form of non-traditional cultural expression.

Many experts say the movement began in New York City in the nineteen sixties. Young adults would use paint in special cans to spray their “tag” on walls and train cars around the city. This tag was a name they created to identify themselves and their artwork. This colorful style of writing is also called graffiti. It is visually exciting and energetic.

Graffiti also became a separate movement expressing the street culture of young people living in big cities. Graffiti art represented social and political rebellion(反抗). These artists could travel around areas of the city making creative paintings for everyone to see. Sometimes this street art created a dispute(争端) between artists and city officials. Graffiti artists created their images and city officials quickly painted over them.

During the 1980s, two famous New York painters—Keith Haring and Jean Michel began showing their work in art galleries and museums. This is when street art started to become part of the more general popular culture.

60. What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A. Street art is very special compared with other forms of popular art. B. Street art has become popular and is accepted as a kind of culture. C. Many people are beginning to learn street art.

D. Street art is better developed in big cities than in rural areas. 61. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. “TAG” was a word created by people to distinguish street artists and the other artists. B. There are three reasons to explain why it is hard to define the history of street art. C. All the people don’t think that the street art is a rich form of cultural expression. D. The movement of street art began in the 1980s in New York City. 62. The city officials used to get rid of graffiti probably because ______.

A. they were ugly in someone’s eyes B. they caused arguments between people

C. they were not painted under proper guidance D. they didn’t express good traditional culture

63. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. What does graffiti art stand for? B. The way to become a street artist. C. The work of street artists. D. The history of an art movement.

C

No girls allowed.

It’s not a sign posted outside a play room, but a possible new approach to education.

“Boys generally become physically and mentally mature later than girls. Boys are often outperformed by girls in schools and colleges. About 80 percent of the high school students who were rated as ‘poor students’ are male.” said Lu Qisheng, President of Shanghai No 8 High School, which is trying to change its senior high school division into a boys-only campus.

Wang Ronghua, Director of the Shanghai Education Development Foundation, has often expressed his concern over the poor performance of boys in schools and colleges, which he has stated will have a negative influence on the country’s improvement in science and technology.

But not all experts approve of the idea.

“It’s very necessary for educators to make some changes and adjustments in terms of education and methods toward boys, but there is no need for students to enter a boys-only school,” said Wen Jun, head of the Institute of Sociology of Shanghai-based East China Normal University.

“Children have to learn how to deal with different people and things during their growth, in which school plays an important role. Separation from the opposite sex will not be a good choice for children’s growth,” Wen said.

A teacher who also spoke against the boys-only school said: If I had a boy, I wouldn’t send him to an all-boys school. The poor performance of boys in their studies can’t be contributed to the co-ed(男女同校的) system. It’s due to the academic evaluation system. In schools, a lot of the courses require students to memorize and recite, such as English vocabulary and grammar, which are not an advantage for boys.”

64. The underlined word “outperformed” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______. A. overcome B. disturbed C. attracted D. controlled 65. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. All female students are good at study. B. All poor students at high school are males. C. Girls’ physical and mental development grows earlier than boys.

D. The country’s science and technology reforms totally depend on males. 66. What can be concluded from Wen Jun’s words?

A. It’s necessary for students to enter a boys-only school.

B. Normal school education is necessary for children’s growth. C. Girls do better in memorizing and reciting English vocabulary. D. School division into boys only is good for children’s development. 67. The author develops the passage by _______.

A. giving typical examples B. listing practical solutions

C. analyzing possible reasons D. presenting different opinions

Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled—to $1.01 per pack, smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines” across the country seeking to kick the habit.

This is not a surprise to public health advocates(提倡者). They’ve studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase.

The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely.

In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday. In Charleston, S.C., where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is

the lowest in the nation, the price was $4.78.

The influence is obvious.

In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys—13.8%, far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky. Other low-tax

states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records.

Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans “who choose to smoke”.

That’s true. But there is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers

from getting addicted in the first place. As for today’s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.

72. The text is mainly about ______.

A. the price of cigarettes B. the differences in tobacco tax rate C. the rate of teen smoking D. the effect of tobacco tax increase 73. The underlined word “deter” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______. A. remove B. prevent C. benefit D. free

74. Rogers’ attitude towards the low-income smokers might be that of ______. A. tolerance B. unconcern C. sympathy D. doubt 75. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Low-income Americans are more likely to fall ill.

B. Future generations will be addicted to smoking. C. Adults will depend more on their families.

D. The new tax will be beneficial in the long run. 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)

Is Failure a Bad Thing?

Failure is a common thing in life. But there are different attitudes towards failure. Whoever draws a lesson from every failure becomes experienced and succeeds. So failure has a different effect on anyone who has a different attitude. As for me, I like

success. Meanwhile, I don’t mind failure because it isn’t a bad matter, and we can stand up in the failure, which isn’t indeed an easy matter. As is known, the defeat to a victor is actually an important basic skill and the required course.

In my opinion we should take an active attitude towards failure, because most of us experience the failure though few of us are so lucky as to succeed. Failure tells us such things as why we failed and what we should do to correct the mistakes. Failure also tells us how to approach our goals and ensures us failure is the mother of success.
