Topic sentence+2(3) Supporting

1. 版本a-Over the past 50 years, young people gain status and power but old people have lost. What is the cause and is it a good development or bad development?

The knowledge-based society witnessed great changes over the past decades. Many young people have taken the place of the old ones and gained political and financial power in the world. Bill Gates, the director of Microsoft, Tony Blaire, Prime Minister of Britain and Bush, President of the USA give us vivid illustration. From my point of view, the trend is natural and inevitable. (63 words)

Young people are energetic and vigorous. Most of them have received formal education in university, where they acquired abundant knowledge and experience, which are quite essential to their future career. Compared with young people, old peoples knowledge is out-dated, which does not fit in with the development of the current society. Old people react more slowly than young people, who can always make quick judges and prompt decisions. Furthermore, young people are more open-minded than old people who have a tendency of conservation. Therefore, young people can adapt themselves to the changeable world more easily. (95 words)

Obviously, this trend brings about both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, young leaders and powers can inject vigor and new hopes to the world, which not only benefits the development of global economy, but also establishes multi-lateral relation between the countries in the world. On the other hand, young people still lack adequate experience and skills to deal with sophisticated national problems and international relations. As a result, many young leaders in the world are often

criticized for lack of tactics by old people. Some young people are very radical when faced with trouble. They still have a lot of things to learn. (105 words)

Generally, old people should offer young guys opportunities to practice their abilities and talents. At the same time, young people should learn from old ones modestly and make themselves more admirable. (31 words) (294 words totally)

版本b:As for elderly, living in caring house is better than living at home with young children. Present your argument to illustrate whether you agree or disagree.(范文在新增大作文栏目)

2.Some people live in one community in their entire lives, others move at least once. some quite often. Compare and contrast moving to different parts of the country versus living in one community in your entire life. Write about 250 words.

Some people live in one community all their lives, while others move around almost as much as nomads游牧民. Both experiences have their advantages and disadvantages. People who stay in one spot can develop lifelong friendships, and such friends may lend a hand if trouble comes. They know each others life history, and they judge each other for the kind of person each is, not for the image each projects.

Yet spending a lifetime in one location can also lock a person into a limited way of life. Personal change may become very difficult. People with few experiences may develop a narrow outlook and find it hard to understand those who have different ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds. On the other hand, moving to different parts of the country is usually stressful. A person may feel lost and uprooted in a place where streets, stores, schools, and churches all are different. At first there are no friends to help.

However, those who do move learn that people in other places have a variety of outlooks. There is a chance to appreciate different ways of life and even to choose the way one likes best.

For a person who moves to a different place year after year, the disadvantages of moving probably outweigh the advantages. But a few moves are probably worth the effort. By staying in each place for a length of time, people can broaden their outlook but have enough time to make adjustment and form friendships.

People nowadays work hard to buy more things. This has made our lives generally more comfortable but many traditional values and customs have been lost and this is a pity. To what extent do you agree or disagree?(此篇7.11G类预测中,较为不重要了)

With the development of the global economy, it enables a vast majority of people to afford to purchase more commodities, which assures people of a more comfortable life but many traditional cultures are being replaced with materialism. Being rich and living the “good life” with all modern conveniences is becoming more important to many people than maintaining traditional values and customs. In my view, it is a pity if we can’t retain valuable traditional values; on the other hand, it’s natural for some outdated ones to fade or disappear.

When people work harder and have sufficient money for their life, they tend to be more self-conscious and abandon some traditional political values, such as: respect for the rulers and superiors, obedience to their orders, uncritical acceptance of certain sacrifices and discriminations. It’s natural to cast off the above traditions and accept a more equal and democratic value system.

Many traditions are valuable and have been lost through ages. As people are enjoying more comfortable material life, they gradually develop their own set of values in order to enjoy their own style of life. They adopt some practical and adulterated content, even of low standard. They show disrespect for tradition, and looking down on public opinion and law. Along with that, many social evils and crimes which had disappeared for many years or been greatly reduced now rise again. In contrast to the past, economic, material values now carry more weight than spiritual ones; personal benefit is a stronger motivation than collective benefit. People rate highly a comfortable material life, looking down upon altruism and not paying attention to other people.

The typical of the national culture, such as the virtues encouraging peace and harmony, should be maintained and promoted. It’s not bad that people work hard to ensure a basis of solid material resources. However, from traditional values one must retain the positive ones for the begin development of people themselves and the society. Otherwise, human beings will be corrupted by the immoral behaviors and values.

4.Successful sports professionals can earn a great deal more money than people in other important professions. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words. 范文:

As a result of constant media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. Just like movie stars, they live extravagant lifestyles with huge houses and cars.

Many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research

scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibility of governing the country. However, sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes, or the level of responsibility he or she holds. Instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. So the notion of ‘fairness’ is not the issue.

Those who feel that sports stars’ salaries are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent are very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. Competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform in their relatively short career. The pressure from the media is intense and there is little privacy out of the spotlight. So all of thesefactors may justify the huge earnings.

Personally, I think that the amount of money such sports stars make is more justified than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicates that our society places more value on sport than on more essential professions and achievements.

5.Some people say that the increasing business and cultural contact between countries has a positive effect; others say it could contribute to a loss of the countries identities. Do you agree or agree or disagree. Our world is changing but the questions seem to remain the same; is increased contact between cultures leading to cultural destruction? Well maybe it is, and, maybe it isn’t. And maybe that is a good thing, and maybe it isn’t. But whatever is happening we have to understand that we cannot control it, nor change it, but rather we have to get used to it.

In this modern world there are so many possibilities; many people can live how they wish and where they wish. People choose to take up any identity that they want; in China some westerners embrace Chinese culture, whilst their Chinese neighbours are wearing Nike and eating at KFC. So it is hard to say if this is cultural loss or not. (Are American’s committing cultural suicide with their KFC and McDonalds food?) The world is far more complex than we try to make out.

And why are we so protective of our culture? (Chinese foot-binding, amongst other things, are cultural artifacts which we would rather forget.) Why can’t the new things we create also be valuable? Trying to preserve the old ways when they may be unsuitable for our future or our survival seems ridiculous. We need to move forward to survive. Increased contact with other countries and cultures is part of that movement forward.

But we will create new things if we give people freedom and resources to do so. I say let people loose, let our culture free; don’t try to hold it back or control it, for surely you will only kill it. Let’s embrace all forms of change; don’t worry we can reject them later.

6. Should governments spend money on art, when they have so many other important issues and concerns?

Many people’s lives are richer because of art—music, paintings,

calligraphy, pictures, sculpture, poems and dance. However, some people feel that governments should be spending money on housing, medical care, or defense, instead of on art. This essay will discuss whether governments should or not spend money on the arts. There are several reasons why governments should not finance artists.

First of all, artists should have to follow the same rules as the rest of the market. If there is a demand for their music or sculpture, then they will be rich. Secondly, politicians generally do not have good taste. They will waste public money on popular art or on their own preferences. But the main reason why governments should minimize spending on the art world is that there are more important areas like housing, roads, hospitals, and factories which need the money first.

However, it would be wrong to say that governments should not spend any money at all on art. Everybody needs some beauty in their life, but not everyone can afford a Picasso or a piece of music. Governments should provide money for museums or concerts halls for everyone. Another point is that art allows people to express themselves and this is good for society, culture and thought. Thirdly, artists can be good for the economy by producing music, film, and attracting tourists.

All in all, governments should prioritize their spending carefully, but they should also allocate some of their budget for art. It is part of their duty to society and to future generations.

版本2:Currently a growing number of governments are investing some money in museums. Some people believe this will benefit the whole society while others maintain that the government should tighten its budget and spend the money on more important things. To my mind, the former view does make sense.

We can hardly lose sight of the fact that every country prides itself on the glory of its own history. Undoubtedly, the museum, which usually boasts a collection of objects of artistic and historical value, plays a vital role in recording a country’s history. By visiting museums, we

can not only learn about our history and civilization, but gradually cultivate a sense of social responsibility, which normally stems from a clear understanding of mankind’s history. For instance, if young people come to know what their ancestors have contributed to the development of their country, they will be inspired to dedicate themselves to the economic well-being of society. Moreover, in the museum, they will also learn something that can not be acquired from books. In addition,

revelling in nostalgic memories is likely to be a sort of great enjoyment and relaxation. Therefore, it will be beneficial to the whole society if the government takes the lead in funding museums.

However, we have to admit that some countries, especially poor ones, may have difficulty spending a large sum of money in this respect, but they are able to organize fundraising activities so that wealthy members of society can donate money to public facilities such as museums. As far as I know, this is common practice in many countries.

In the final analysis, it is quite clear that museums are treasure troves of mankind. The government, as well as the individuals, should endeavour to provide enough funds for them to be on the right track. We can hardly lose sight of the fact that?, boast a collection of objects of artistic and historical value, reveling in nostalgic memories, is likely to be?

7. Traffic is a very serious problem. The pedestrians and bicycle riders are more and more dangerous. Many gardens become sacrifices to highways. What are the best ways to make the citizens satisfied?

Traffic problem becomes the biggest concern of many countries in the world, not only because of the environmental pollution caused by the exhaust gas and irritating noise, but also the menace it takes to the bicycle riders and pedestrians. Furthermore, many gardens and grasslands give way to the rapid development of traffic facilities like highway, flyovers and avenues, leaving less and less space for the citizens. (66 words) Admittedly, the development of road construction stimulates the

prosperity of economy. For example, the increase of employment rate, the sales of the private cars and the high taxes levied on car owners are what a government expects. But as a responsible government, it should have a long-term development plan instead of the pursuit of a short-term profit. A responsible government should always give priority to people’s appeal. (68 words)

To make the citizens satisfied, firstly, a government should preserve for the citizens more gardens and meadows, where people can spend weekend with their friends and family. Gardens and meadows can also purify the polluted air, creating a good environment to the citizens. Secondly, a government should encourage the use of public transport and limit the ownership of private cars. Due to the economic development, many citizens can afford a private car. Take Shenzhen as an example, the sales of private cars increase by 5,000 every month. It is hard to imagine if the current roads can accommodate so large a number of cars five or ten years later. Finally, a government should consider the relation between economic development and environmental protection, leaving more green lands to our descendants. (129 words)

To sum up, economic development and environmental protection do not contradict each other. If a government is responsible, it should make no efforts to give people a comfortable living environment and dedicate to economic development as well. (30 words) (293 words totally)

8.Some people believe that history is little or nothing to people. Others think that people must study history to understand the present. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

History is more than the old stories, myths, or an academic subject for the scholars to write papers or books. Like many other sciences, history not only tells people what have happened before but also functions as a compass to lead human beings in the right course.

One of the most important roles that the study of history plays in solving the current human affairs is that it functions as a “rearview mirror”. It shows what is behind you so that you can move forward easily. History is, in essence, the people and their activities, both physical and psychological, in the past. If we accept that the past and the present are not entirely separated, then we have to admit the value of history. Our ancestors have suffered the same troubles, such as disease, disaster, or devil, as what we are confronted with, and their experiences, knowledge, and understanding of nature provide us with invaluable wisdom. It is true that a fewer people claim that history helps people little in unlocking the current problems. They might give a long list of assumed “evidence”. For instance, they say that environmental issues are new, globalization unprecedented, political or economical conflicts fresh, and the like. Nevertheless, they have failed to see that in essence these problems are what our forefathers have experienced. Today people are suffering the same old trouble of poverty, wars, and mental crisis. Therefore, reading history, at least we can find some clues to solve these problems.

9.International tourism now is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately, it creates tension rather than understanding between the peoples from different cultures.(此篇09年5月30日预测中在G类大作文,相对不重要了)

To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?

----------argumentation-----totally 353 words-------------------

Tourism can create jobs and other opportunities for almost all communities. Therefore, Governments worldwide have worked out many incentives aimed at developing overseas market. Personally I believe, tension is always accompanied with influxes of foreign visitors, which has already overshadowed understanding achieved via travel. (44words)

Let me start by talking about the tension brought by international

tourism. Last Independence Day Festival, I, followed by a couple of friends, traveled to a small county located in Bolivia. Surprisingly we happened to see thousands of people singing and dancing on the street. Three guys dressing in local costume swayed badly towards us, bringing drinking beer for us. Owing to our arrival in a totally new place, we declined to take any alcohol in case of being entrapped. Unexpectedly quarrels occurred as a consequence of language barrier. What's worse, one of them spitted on us, whose behavior turned our journey to be a trip of humiliation and resentment. As a matter of fact, the local residents were celebrating yearly Beer Festival. Our refusal was regarded as a bad manner to look down upon them. For this reason, I would infer that international tourists usually spend only one or two days staying in the same place. It is impossible for them to thoroughly have a good knowledge of the local culture. Consequently misconception and disputes happen frequently between peoples embodied with varied culture backgrounds. (185 words)

Now let me turn to the discussion of understanding gained on the tour. Generally a western tourist is fond of visiting different places with exploring different customs, particularly those primitive cultures in remote mountainous areas. Such an exploration can expose himself with more opportunities of communicating with local people, which might be considered as a good way to better understand the local culture. However, different interpretation and religion eventually would probably lead him to conclude that those odd traditions handed down generation by generation in the destined region are no more than a superstitious belief. Such understanding does little good to maintain sound relationship between nations. (106 words)

All in all, global travel should be discouraged until understanding amid peoples overwhelmingly outweighs negative effects like tension. (18 words)

Is It Necessary to Develop Tourism? 论据 Arguments

1. It is necessary to develop the tourist trade, for it contributes a lot to increasing understanding between nations. 2. As the saying goes, “Seeing is believing.” Only a trip to an unfamiliar land can help us understand the people and culture there.

3. Since tourism helps increase understanding between people, it will finally wipe out prejudice against other nations, and make the world a more peaceful one.

4. Tourism contributes significantly to many countries' GNP (Gross National Product). The economy of some nations is based on the tourist industry.

5. Tourism helps develop a nation’s commerce because tourists are most likely to buy souvenirs wherever they go. 6. Tourism provides jobs for many people and helps solve or ease the social problem of unemployment.

7. Tourism helps accelerate a city's construction and its embellishment. 8. Contact with tourists from afar widens the horizon of the local people. 9. The tourist trade gives people a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the world and the wonders of manki12

10. Tourism will help people learn about different cultures of the world.

Counter-arguments 1. Tourism cannot increase understanding between nations because tourists are often trapped in big hotels and only gaze at the natives from a distance. 2. Tourism does not wipe out prejudice, but leads to the persistence of national stereotypes because when traveling, you notice only characteristics which confirm your preconceptions.

3. It is true that foreign friends can make people understand stereotypes are absurd and harmful, but the tourist trade prevents people from making foreign friends. 4. Since tourists do not have time to mix with the local people, they cannot have a full view of the local culture.

5. Tourism makes some parts of the world too crowded a place to live in. 6. Tourism creates pollution and has destroyed many beautiful scenic spots. 7. Tourists cannot have a full enjoyment of the beautiful scenery because the places they visit are restricted by organizers. 8. As the saying goes, “Travel makes a wise man better, but a fool worse.” 9. Contact with and assimilation of other cultures will reduce the uniqueness of one’s own culture and make the world less colourful than before.

Many developing countries are currently expanding their tourist industries. Why is the case? Is it a positive development?

Currently, there is a hot discussion about the reasons why there are developing countries in growing number expanding tourist industries and whether it is a positive development or not. As far as I am concerned, I am convinced that it is a positive development. In this essay, I will make an analysis of the reasons in the following paragraphs.(考试大) 首要的原因是,旅游业是很多发展中国家财政收入的主要来源,财政上对这些国家的经济发展很有利。

The first and foremost reason is that, tourism, which becomes the principal source of financial revenue in many developing countries, is financially beneficial to the economic development. For instance, China needs an increasing amount of foreign currencies for its modernization drive. Tourism is one of the most crucial channels to obtain such currencies. Furthermore, tourism facilitates the development of the catering business and transportation service as well. Additionally, tourist industries make primary contribution to the national income and tax revenue.

In the second place, tourism provides local habitants in tourist attractions with more opportunities of employment, which has eliminated some social problems to some extent. In the scenic spots, it is common that even the uneducated people can make a living simply by selling souvenirs, local specialties and so on, which relieves the pressure of local government.

Last but not least, it is true that tourism contributes a great deal to the friendship and mutual understanding between people from different countries, which will unquestionably enhance the future cooperation in international affairs. Tourism provides people with a good opportunity to have a better understanding of the culture, history and customs in foreign countries.

All in all, it is of great benefit for developing countries to promote the tourist industry, for it will play a positive role in both the economic and political development of a country.

10. Government should protect culture. Therefore, some people believe that new building should be built in traditional style. Do you agree or disagree?

范文1:The culture of a country changes in the course of social development. This is what is happening in developing nations such as China. Government has the obligation to preserve the culture of a country in a proper way.

In the real-estate business, for example, developers build houses, apartments, and offices to meet the demands of consumers differing in

taste and spending power. Some buildings are built in traditional style as a selling point to differentiate from competing products. In some cases, a municipal government tries to give its city a unique aroma by constructing buildings in old style. However, such newly built “old” buildings appear strikingly different from the originals centuries old. On the campus of Peking University, we can easily tell the differences between the old and the new. Even we admire the university’s efforts, this is not a work beautifully done. More examples would be found in many architects that are ridiculed by both consumers and critics. The real issue is: could culture be replicated? If yes, then to what extent do buildings represent a culture? In China, the more commonly known architect styles are found in temples or palaces. Though the government tries to recreate such places, people often label them as fake.

In spite of the disadvantages in government’s efforts in cultural preservation, we have to recognize that such endeavor reminds people of their unique identity and legacy. And it balances the trend that tries to make everything western just to keep up with the trend.

To sum up, it is very hard or sometimes impossible for the government to create truly good work in traditional style to preserve a culture. Nonetheless, such efforts are worthy because of the positive influences they have on people in a country with rich history and culture like China.

范文2:In modern cities, erections have become one of city’s identities, representing architect’s concept and people’s esthetic preference. Some people insist buildings should be built in more traditional styles, in order to highline the cultural identity, while some people believe it is unnecessary.

Admittedly, traditional styled buildings are cultural legacy of our ancestors, which represent a history of thousands years. But they falsely take the assumption that traditional building is the only type of architecture that reflects culture. Actually, a nation’s culture is constituted with a lot of elements, covering architecture, festivals and customs, and can be classified into historic culture and modern culture. Therefore, regarding traditional styled buildings as cultural identity is one-sided and partial.

I do agree that buildings should be designed as a symbol of a nation’s culture, but I don’t agree that the more traditional styled buildings, the more cultural distinctive our nation is. So, In my opinion, I suggest the government should develop multiple building styles, incorporating both the traditional style and the modern style. To begin with, our culture is developing with the time, which makes itself different from periods.

That’s why there are traditional style of old pried and modern style of nowadays.

Therefore, the combination of the traditional and the modern can fully unfold cultures of different eras. For example, most England cities I visited are pride for both their historic buildings and modern skyscrapers. Manchester’s imperial war museum, a perfect combination with history and modern design, has an external appearance like a flying machine and many internal exhibitions like a mysterious kingdom. What’s more, using modern architectural technology can help the government conserve old buildings better. Once all the historic architectural heritages are repaired, a clear vision of real traditional culture would be presented.

All things considered, I think a wise government should not neglect the significance of modern style in the cultural identity, and thus focus on the combination of traditional buildings and modern buildings.

11.In order to learn a language well, we should also learn about the country as well as the cultures and lifestyles of the people who speak it.To what extent do you agree or disagree?

I fully support the assertion that to learn a language well, we should also learn about the country as well as the cultures and lifestyles of the people who speak it.

Let’s first see how we normally define “learning a language really well”. By my understanding, learning a language well would mean being able to speak the language in a proper way. Here, with speaking it properly, we need to know that due to cultural differences, many things are just so different from culture to culture. For example, the Chinese often greet each other by asking ‘Have you taken your meal?’ which, to the Western ears, would make an invitation to lunch or dinner. Therefore, the lack of a knowledge of the cultures of different countries will give rise to wrong interpretations of the message issued or received and as a result, lead to misunderstandings. In this way, we can not say that we are speaking the language properly and further, we can not say that we speak it well.

Second, the ultimate purpose for us to learn a language is to use it in our communication with other people who speak it, mainly the native speakers. Suppose we know nothing about the US or Britain, including its government, its people, its tradition, and its other aspects. Do you think you can speak English properly, thus achieving effective communication with the American or British people? I’ll say at least I can’t.

Third, the lifestyle of the people whose language we are learning is also something we need to know in order that we can speak their language properly. For instance, the Chinese eat pork, but this is not the case with Muslims. Also, Muslims are very religious people and perform rituals many times a day. If we don’t know these things, how can we expect to communicate with them without incurring troubles? In this logic, if we cannot make sure that we are speaking their language properly, how can we say that we have learned their language well?

From the above discussion, we can draw the conclusion that to learn a language really well, we also need to learn about the country as well as the cultures and lifestyles of the people who speak it.

版本2 Some people think that a new language should be invented for people from different countries to use for the international communication. To what extent do you think its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages?

1. Some people live in one community in their entire lives, others move at least once; some quite often. Compare and contrast moving to different parts of the country versus living in one community in your entire life. Write about 250 words.

Some people live in one community all their lives, while others move around almost as much as nomads. Both experiences have their advantages and disadvantages.

People who stay in one spot can develop lifelong friendships, and such friends may lend a hand if trouble comes. They know each other's life history, and they judge each other for the kind of person each is, not for the image each projects. Yet spending a lifetime in one location can also lock a person into a limited way of life. Personal change may become very difficult. People with few experiences may develop a narrow outlook

and find it hard to understand those who have different ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds.

By staying in each place for a length of time, people can broaden their outlook but have enough time to make adjustment and form. friendships.

2. Zoos are sometimes seen as necessary but poor alternative to a natural environment. Is it necessary to keep animals in zoos?

In the modern society, zoos are almost indispensable places in large cities for people to visit. In some large zoos, there are various animals from space to sea and from primitive invertebrates to advanced and intelligent mammals. In the zoos, all animals, including those rare animals, such as panda, Africa elephant, and North-East tiger, could enjoy good care and protection away from any hurt. However, along with the stronger natural environmental protection consciousness, many people think that to put animals into small cages will change their living instincts, and therefore break the ecological balance.

Viewed from the basic relations between animals and human beings, animals should have the equal freedom with human beings. They are all forms of life. Animals have their own living instinct, and it is this instinct that forms the biological chain of the Earth. This relation is called “Ecological Balance” academically. For example, insect—bird—snake. If most birds in a region are killed and locked into cages by human beings, the pests will eat out all crops, and snakes will lose a large part of food resources, therefore leading to starvation and death.

This opinion sounds ideal theoretically. However in reality, human beings and other animals cannot stay together peacefully on the Earth. Because of human beings’ lust for fortune, many valuable animals are killed or sold, especially those endangered species. Therefore, zoos appear as an active way for people to protect those poor animals. First, this is an action not only for animals but also for human being itself. Once the biological chain is broken, human beings will be punished inevitably. Next, zoos can serve a purpose of educating and entertaining people, narrowing the distance between human beings and animals. Last, zoos can be a scientific study center to rescue more endangered spices and make animals better serve people’s need.

The key point of this topic is freedom or protection. In my opinion, those two aspects can be unified. It is necessary to keep animals in zoos for the purpose of protection, teaching and study. Let’s think it further, the purpose of all these actions is to make animals live happier, therefore, maintain the ecological balance, hence protect our own living environment.

Wild animals have no place in the 21st century. Some people think that preventing these wild animals from dying out is a waste of resource. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.

Biological diversity has never been so threatened as it is today as a result of the process of human civilization. The various forms of pressure created by human activity have destroyed natural balance, leading to the deterioration of natural habitats, genetic erosion and the rarity, even disappearance, of a number of plant and animal species. As the pace of civilization accelerates, more people, taking up more space, needing to use more natural resources, engaging in ever-growing consumption, impose severe deterioration on the habitat of animals. An increasing number of people come to realize that the disappearance of animals will result in serious threat to the equilibrium of ecosystem. For example, the extinction of hawks, a rat-eating bird seen in many regions, will result in the rapid propagation of rats. And rats, further, will destroy the prairies and threaten the other animals like gazelles, zebras and others, who live on grass and green lands. The coexistence of animals and human beings creates perfect harmony and brings about the vividness to our planet.

It is hard to imagine what our world would be like without animals. Sociologists also point out that the disappearance of animals can cause social and economic problems. Animal trade, as a supporting sector to the world economy, was very active before. However, the situation is beyond control since animal trade is very profitable and alluring. Many species cannot escape the adversity of being killed.

Certainly, our diet cannot be without meat. There are living stocks, which can provide us with sufficient and nutritious products. Therefore, we need not to resort to wild animals, especially the endangered ones. To protect animals is to protect our living environment. Every individual should join efforts to keep the diversity of animals.

4.The only way to reduce the amount of traffic in cities today is by reducing the need for people to travel from home for work, education or shopping. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

It is certainly true that today traffic in cities throughout the world has become a major problem. This is obvious from the number of vehicles on our roads and the amount of pollution they cause. Probably the traffic

problem is due to individuals travelling for work, study or shopping purposes, and this is evident in the rush hours we experience every morning and evening.

It is also true that, these days, such daily commuting is not always necessary because people can do these things from home. We can see this in the options Information Technology gives us today. For instance, on-line work, distance learning and shopping facilities are all available via the Internet.

However, even if everyone had access to the technology and the opportunity to work from home, it is unrealistic to think that everyone would want to. Even though the technology for working, studying or shopping on-line makes this option a possibility, nevertheless it would mean people had less freedom of choice and less social contact in their lives. This would have a large impact on society as a whole.

So, in conclusion, I think that while this practice could reduce the traffic problems in our cities, it is most unlikely to be an acceptable solution. In terms of other solutions, perhaps we need to think more carefully about facilitating public transport and limiting private cars in our city centres. The development of public transport that is not road-based, such as sky trains or subways, would probably be a more acceptable alternative measure to reduce jams on our roads.

3.some people suggest when people move to a new country they should accept the new culture as their own. to what extent do you agree or disagree? Recently, the debate over whether people who have been in a foreign country should accept the new culture or form a separate minority with different values and lifestyle has aroused wide concern. People retain diverse attitudes towards this hot issue. Before presenting my view, I intend to explore both sides of the argument.

Many people claim that people living in a new country should accept the new culture and adapt to their new environment. To begin with, by accepting the new notions and lifestyle, you can easily survive and enjoy a comfortable life and be well adaptable. Moreover, it is a necessity for overseas students to adapt to the new culture and society, because it may impose an adverse influence on their living and study if they cannot be socially adaptable. Furthermore, to form a separate minority may bring out negative outcomes such as hostility and resentment. It will undoubtedly exert a negative impact on relationship between people from different nations.

Some other people, however, strongly hold that it is necessary to form a group with their own values and lifestyle for several sound reasons. Firstly, they are in a foreign country and are actually a minority with little power, many of which even have no equal rights. Therefore, it is wise for them to join together to enhance their strength to cope with social problems. Secondly, by helping each other in the group, people can more easily adapt to the new community and society and lead a better life. Thirdly, students in a new environment may more or less have physical or psychological problems, so it is helpful for students to get together to help each other.

From the above discussion, we can see that there is actually some truth in both statements. Personally, I am in favour of the former view. Adaptability is an important quality for people especially students who are going abroad to further their education. After all, even if you form a separate minority, you still have to accept the new culture and adapt to the new settings.(欧扬)结构方面用了双中,在讨论\入乡随俗\派主张时,明显采用了正反论证,实践了有利生存,不实践滋生敌意怨恨.

2:A much-debated issue these days is whether people should accept the different values and the new lifestyle when they move to a new country. It has become a focus of public interest. Notions about it vary greatly. People can hardly reach an absolute consensus and therefore it is wise to take a closer look at the arguments at both sides before I present my pinion.

Advocates of this hot issue hold the belief that it is imperative for people to accept the different values and the new lifestyle when they settle in a new country. To begin with, it is beneficial for immigrants to adapt social life if they learn more about the local culture and lifestyle, especially for children. It is easily for them to make friends with others in schools. Moreover, it is necessary for settlers change their lifestyle and accept the new values. When in Roma, do as the Romans do. Last of all, immigrants will feel isolated and depressed if they have no idea about the culture and lifestyle of this country.

Some other people, however, are strongly against this hit issue for

several reasons. First and foremost, it is ridiculous for people to abandon their original culture and lifestyle when they move to a new country. Furthermore, it is a breach of one’s basic right if me ask them to change their lifestyle. We should show greater respect for each other’s religions and cultures. Last but not least, it is significant for people to maintain cultural diversity as it is vital for people to pass their culture on to their offsprings. Meanwhile, it would be a pity for the descendants to know nothing about the culture of their ancestors.

In the final analysis, both sides have sound foundations. However, if asked to make a choice, I will not hesitate to assent to the latter. It is sensible for immigrants to keep their culture and lifestyle when they move to a new country.

3:Nowadays, more and more people would like to move to other countries and settle down for better natural environment, and more educational opportunities. Whether these new settlers should accept new countries’ values and lifestyles has become a public focus. Before presenting my own opinion, I think it is essential to analyze both sides of the issue.

People in favor of acceptance to new values claim that once you live in a new environment, you have to adapt yourself to the new community. If not, you would feel psychologically isolated. Moreover, getting yourself in the new environment, you can develop a better career, for your employer will consider you to be an adaptable person. And your family also can get themselves involved in the new community. Last but not least, as you accept the new values and lifestyles, you can learn something new apart from your own culture.

Those who are against, however, argue that if the settlers accept new values and culture, they are considered to betray their own countries, so they no longer belong to their countries. Furthermore, new settlers are supposed to keep their own styles. For instance, their eating habits, religion believes, and so on. Last of all, it is a good way to preserve their tradition and culture, especially the ethnic, who are in minority of people.

Personally speaking, I tend to side with the former view. Though people should have their unique styles, it is crucial to adjust to the new environment and community. An old saying just illustrates my point: When in Rome, do as the Roman.

4. As for elderly, living in caring house is better than living at home with young children. Present your argument to illustrate whether you agree or disagree.

Nowadays more and more elderly choose living in caring house. Some people are of the opinion that caring houses provide old people with a better environment than homes. Personally I agree with this opinion for the following reasons.

In the first instance, caring house provides the elderly with

comparatively first-rate facilities and services, which the family is lacking in. Nowadays working couple need to face intense competition, they need to make more money to support their family. As a result, working couple have less time to care for old people especially when the elderly suffer from serious disease. On the contrary, when old people live in caring houses, nurses can attend their need and advanced facilities also provide a good treatment.

Secondly, in caring houses the older people can meet people of similar age group, taste and hobby who know more about the elderly. The young generation often has a different life style from old generation. Young people may feel others' presence unpleasant. Besides, the older people need more serenity and rest while the young need more activities when the

elderly choose living in caring house they need not worry about this problem.

Last but not least, elder people living in caring house can maintain harmony of family atmosphere. It is quite obvious that there is a generation gap between the older people and adult children. For example, old people fear change. They adhere to the traditional principle and customs while young people welcome new idea. They are always trying new things. It is inevitable that older people and adult children might have different opinions on something. These differences might result in the disagreement even discord.

From what has been discussed above, we may draw the conclusion that elderly people living in caring house is a good practice not only for adult children but also for older people. However, it does not mean children will give up the responsibility to care older people.

1.take care by children 和in nursing homes 各有优缺点

4. As neither the two solutions is effective enough to solve the problem of ?, I favor the combination of the two.

5. Young adults should undertake unpaid work to help people in the community. Do you think it brings more drawbacks to the community and the young adults than benefits?

Some people believe that some unpaid community service should be a

compulsory part of high school programmes (e.g. working in a charity, improving the relationship of neighborhood or teaching sports to children) To what extent do you agree or disagree? 范文1:Presently, there has sprung up a public discussion on whether unpaid community service should be an absolutely necessary course of high school programs. Being a student, I assume, the community service with no pay could be a compulsory part of high school programs if the time students spend on it will affect their natural life too much.

At present, there is an increasing number of single child families, where children lack many essential social abilities such as practical working competence, interpersonal skills and social adaptation ability because their parents are too busy with their own career to help their children acquire these. Therefore, parents urgently need some other ways to help in this aspect as they know how crucial these abilities are to their children. If students take part in some unpaid community service such as working in a charity or teaching sports to children or other activities then they will develop their knowledge and skills immediately. Markedly, it is considerable that some unpaid community services should be a compulsory part of high school programs.

However, joining in an unpaid community service is far from simple, because the service system is not stable and restricted enough. If Students are unable to finish their own unpaid community service work owing to insufficient support and assistance, then their emotion and ordinary life will be affected. Ultimately, the disadvantages of joining in an unpaid community service will outweigh its advantages. Nevertheless, this problem can be solved if schools assign students these unpaid community services in a rational and appropriate way.

Taking into account all of these factors, we may reach the conclusion that some unpaid community services should be a necessary part of high school programs unless students will be negatively influenced by doing so.

范文2:In modern societies, it is increasingly popular that young people volunteer on weekends in the local community service center to help the

people in need. If all the youngsters do it in a regular way, the benefits are obvious to both the community and these young adults although there are some minor drawbacks as well.

It can be argued that the advantages of doing unpaid community service are enormous. Indeed, when an old person feels sick, the volunteers could offer first aid before the doctor or the ambulance arrives. Likewise, if a disabled person has difficulty doing some daily activities such as shopping, the assistance from young volunteers is indispensable. Moreover, as far as the young people are concerned, they could develop the sense of responsibility, independence as well as interpersonal skills in the process of helping others in the neighborhood. In this way, people may live in harmony in the community.

Nevertheless, the downsides of volunteer community service are worth mentioning. In fact, in the city like Shanghai, an increasing number of graduates find it harder to make a living on their own. Thus, if all of the young adults are required to do full-time unpaid job in a fixed period, some of them would have no income source, which is unrealistic to these youngsters. In addition, it is believed that community service could possibly take up their time of acquiring knowledge.

Therefore, compared with the merits of volunteer community service offered by the young adults, the demerits of that are just a few but cannot be overlooked.

8.When designing a building, the most important factor is inside use of the building rather than its outside appearance. Do you agree or disagree?)

Which is more important, function or appearance? This has always been a hot topic for so many years. As people are becoming more and more practical, they pay great emphasis on functions of things. But when people are satisfied with material life, they have spiritual requirement. And aesthetics is one of their pursuits.

The basic requirement of a building is its inside use. No one buys a house that he cannot live in only to appreciate its appearance. As I have said, modern people are practical, so we never do things that cannot benefit us. But with the new techniques and advanced tools, up until now, human beings have no problem to construct a building to satisfy our practical use, thus in this sense, on the basis of usefulness, we have a higher requirement of beautifulness. That’s why our world has become more and more beautiful.

But it also depends on different cases. Buildings used for exhibition should not be the same with those used for residence. Great buildings for exhibitions or used as museums are art works themselves and worthy of our appreciating. The most famous is Sydney Theatre. Many people visit it for its great beauty rather than enjoying concerts. If the building is only for us to live in, then there is no necessity to invite a famous architect do design such an elegant house. Such buildings are also out of our purchasing power.

To sum up, the inside use and the appearance are both very important. But it doesn’t mean that we should always give the same weight to the two. It should depend on concrete occasions. III.

Sample Essay

The private motor vehicle has given us a freedom our ancestors could not dream about. We can travel swiftly, and usually safely, over the roads which have been built to accommodate our cars. People can display their wealth by driving a car which may cost as much as another person’s home. - Introduction: advantages of cars (brief)

Sadly the car has become a disadvantage as well as a boom. The car pollutes the atmosphere, may be involved in serious accidents, and by its very numbers blocks roads and chokes cities. How can we reduce its use? - Brief statement of problem: disadvantages of cars

The car is only desirable if we can use it easily, so we might begin by reducing access to parking spaces in the cities and simultaneously increasing the quality and availability of public transport. Cars could be banned form certain parts of the city, thus forcing people to walk or to use public transport. - Ideas for cutting the number of cars

The expense of buying and running a car can be raised. If the motorist is faced with a high purchase price, high road tax, high insurance premiums and substantial fines he or she may reconsider the purchase. A corresponding reduction in the price of public transport would help this financial argument against car ownership.

Neither of these arguments will sway the super rich who can afford the status cars, but it would perhaps encourage them to look at other ways of demonstrating their wealth. However we do it, reducing the number of cars on the road will reduce the problems of pollution and the congestion which can bring cities to a standstill. - Conclusions: states the benefits of reducing the number of cars

2:Advantages and disadvantages of private cars.

With the fantastic spur both in industry and in economy in China, the number of people who own private cars is on the rise. Some people have bought cars of their own, and others are planning to buy cars. But there have been two quite different views on this phenomenon.

Some claim that there are many advantages brought about by cars. First, the automobile industry provides jobs for countless workers and strong support for other industries. Second, if conditions permit, owning a car can make us work more efficiently. Finally, life will become more

convenient. A car allows one to move freely and with a car there is no

need to wait for the bus in the cold or under the burning sun.

However, others strongly object to the increase in developing private cars. They hold that automobiles will give rise to a series of problems. In the first place, as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. Next, private cars contribute to traffic congestion so greatly that the advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled out by the frustration caused by traffic jams. The last problem is the increasing number of car accidents that have killed and will kill a lot of people in a friction of a second.

In my opinion, although automobiles have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of our society, they also bring us numerous troubles such as more serious environmental pollution, more traffic accidents and more energy consumption. They drink up huge amounts of fuel and throw out huge amounts of pollutants. Traffic accidents kill thousands and

thousands of people each year and cripple more. Jams waste our precious time. Therefore I am against developing private cars.

版本2:Recently we are facing increasing number of cars, which poses great threat to the pedestrians and cyclists. What’s more, a lot of parks need to be sacrificed as a result of the construction of railways and

superhighways. Do you agree or disagree? What do you think is the best solution to satisfy residents to their heart’s content?

From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous age. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. The expectation of life has increased enormously. But though the possibility of a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible slaughter of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor-car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing if the number of vehicles increases dramatically with years.

Besides, we city-dwellers are obliged by our environment to adopt a wholly unnatural way of life. We lose touch with the land and rhythm of nature. Only electronic calendar in the computer may remind us that it is spring or autumn because many gardens have to make way to highway or expressways.

All the simple, good things of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium. Traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere and the flow of traffic goes on unceasingly and the noise never stops and thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly mutilated each year and our governments

are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.

When transportation corporations and motor companies have already made great effort to make travel more comfortable and efficient, governments should have concerned about how we can make every dweller satisfied in terms of urban environment. With regard to selling vehicles and transportation infrastructure plan, the laws of some countries are notoriously lax, which contributes to the extremely disorder in transportation.

From my point of view, here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The majority of roadways in cities should be built underground to make room for public gardens and lakes. Great effort should be made to develop public transportation. The tax on petrol should be increased. In addition, governments should lay down a rule for manufactures of lowest price of vehicles. These measures may sound inordinately harsh, but surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in a happier life. After all, the world is for human being rather than motor-cars. 2.

People have different expectation for jobs. Some people prefer to do the same job for the same company, and some people rather than change the job frequently. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantage?

Some people prefer to stay in the same job for the same company, but others prefer to change jobs frequently. You should use specific reasons to compare the advantages and disadvantages of both sides. People rarely have an absolute consensus on the controversial issue whether a man should intend to go in for a life-time career. These days, very few people prefer always taking a position.

in some senses, a life-time career has its merits. First, if you stick to taking a post, all angles of the job will have appeared; after some time, you will definitely have a good command of it. Consequently you may become a veteran of the field and earn respect or prestige from others. Second, you can establish an extensive social connections related to the field, helping you tear down most of the barriers standing in the way of your working endeavor. Finally, mistakes of the routine tasks would be minimized because you have learned the lessons.

However, as the modern society develops, experiencing different jobs has its advantages. Initially, we look at the issue of bribery. Many high-level staff are inclined to accept bribes via power in hand. However, if he knows that someone else will soon take his place, such acts can be avoided. We then look at work motivation. If one works for the same company for a long time without promotion, he may get sick and tired of doing the same daily routine. Nonetheless, a manager should have qualities of a sense of teamwork and the capability of coordination. Therefore, to try various positions can help you gain ground to be promoted.

Conclusion ( 67 words)

In summary, staying in the same post can cultivate one to cut out for the job but involve one in a boring career while changing jobs frequently can be both advantageous by keeping bribery away and providing one with more opportunities of promotion and disadvantageous by making mistakes occasionally. In my opinion, people should seek a decent and good-paid job and pay little attention to changing it.

范文2

Nowadays, whether or not staying in one position for a long time is a problem that worry about a lot of people. To understand the solution, let’s take a closer look at the two sides of it first.

The merit of going in for a life-time career is obvious. Firstly, long time working in the same position can help one become an expert in this area, for it is natural to get familiar with your work from every angle and accumulate abundant experience. In addition, mistakes of the routine tasks would be minimized because you have learned the lessons. However, the defect is also caused by the long time unchanging job. As everyone’

s patience is different, some may feel that the longer they do the same job, the less interest and power they may have.

In comparison, if one person changes job frequently, he or she will never be

annoyed about this problem, which is the best advantage of doing like this.

Once the worker feels bored with job, change it directly. But this would make one person not good at any subjects that he or she does. What is worst, while the competition of job is getting sharper and sharper, who can be sure of finding a job whenever he or she wants?

Therefore, since each of the

two ways shows a unique quality, the better way, in my opinion, is to try some jobs at first in order to make an aim. Once seeking the job you like, don’t avert it easily and devote yourself to it

范文3

In the last few years, with the development of society, working in a place all along has already become history. People can choose their job freely, so, people have different expectation for jobs. Some people prefer to do the same job for the same company, and some people rather than change the job frequently. This dispute has brought our attention.

First of all, the free choice of the job is the inevitable outcome of the social development. People can give play to their different ability in different work positions. To a person gifted in many ways, it is very challenging to often change the job. For example, a person has very outstanding ability, in the specific field. He can change his job after working some time in one place, in order to seek kind development. Moreover, a person has very good ability in many aspects, then, He can often change and work, in order to seek the feeling of freshness or raise the quality of life.

However, to some people or some specific posts, it is impossible to often change the job. For instance, an accountant, he only grasps the knowledge and experience of accounting, he can work perfectly within the specific limits, and then changing job is unnecessary to him. Furthermore, in order to make the scientific payoffs, some scientists dedicate themselves to the scientific undertaking.

So, I think whether people should change the job frequently, should depend on their personal situation or their working positions. As a saying goes, it is one-sided to treat the question in isolation. 3.The gap of living in cities and the countryside is larger and larger. What are the reasons in your country and how to reduce the differences? As the step of economic development accelerates, the gap between the city and the countryside becomes more and more overt, which arouses wide concerns. Take a further look at the phenomenon, there are three major causes.

Firstly, the insufficiency of investment in the rural areas accounts mainly for the issue. China, for example, covers a very large area. Due to the emphasis on the development in the coastal areas, the government devotes more investment in the large cities, such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. The investment, undoubtedly, is repaid by the threefold

increase of economy and commerce in these cities. However, this is not the case in the rural areas and the western regions. The lack of investment hinder the productivity and economic development and sharpens the gap between the city and the countryside.

Secondly, the low education level in the rural areas contributes partly to the gap of living. Education is the prime force of productivity. Keeping this in mind, many countries and governments give priority to the development of education. China’s education witnessed a rapid growth in the past decade. However, the education level in the countryside still keeps very low. The enrollment of primary schools and secondary schools is much lower compared with the advanced regions, not to mention the developed countries in the world. Without good education, the development of economy and technology would be a dream difficult to be realized. Finally, the influx of migrant workers to the cities from the

countryside deteriorates the undeveloped condition in the rural areas. The life style in the urban areas is very attractive to the people in the countryside. To seek more working opportunities, many people abandon the fertile lands and leave them uncultivated. If the situation continues, it will lead to serious unbalance of economic and regional development. To sum up, only when the government renders more concerns over the issue can the gap between the cities and the countryside be bridged. 4.Universities

should accept equal numbers of male and female studying in every subject. Do you agree or disagree.

================================================= 范文1

Nowhere in the world has the issue of female rights and interests been so much debated as in our society. Nowadays, plenty of universities limit the number of female students who study in some of subjects; therefore, many people think universities should accept equal numbers of men and female studying in every subject, but others have a negative attitude. As far as I am concerned, I think men and women should gain equal educational opportunities, but accepting equal numbers of male and female, in every subject, is unnecessary and impossible. Ther

efore, I disagree with the view that universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. My argument in support of my view is as follows.

The main reason is that mode of thinking is different between female and male. Everyone, male and female, has equal right to study in universities, nevertheless, due to difference of in thought and views. Men and Women may represent varied study capability. A case in point is that men may possess more talent than women in mathematics, physics and like stuff. In the

study of language, on the other hand, female shows stronger ability than male. In the history of human beings, most scientists, especially those who research abstract theories, are male.

Another reason is that nature decides different directions of development between men and women. Today, although female’s right is being increased, female still plays a different social role. Women are by nature good at house

keeping since the biological function of a woman is first to bring children into

the world and then to bring them up and it has been proved by some scientists that women are not good at business management, political administration, etc. So, in the study of business and management, requiring equal numbers of male and female is not essential.

From what has been discussed above, we may draw the conclusion that accepting equal numbers of male and female students in every subject is impossible and I also disagree with this point of view.

范文2

It is obvious that there are far more men than women in college studying science and technical subjects while when it comes to the arts, the opposite is true. But some people claim it will cause serious problems. However, I believe the phenomenon is very normal.

In the first place, subject selection is decided by students themselves,

without influences from universities and colleges. Studies show that of men and women think differently. Male students like to major in technical subjects, while

female students are more likely to choose the arts. This may be because it is thought that people who major in more technical fields have a better chance to get a higher salary after graduation, since men usually take the burdens of feeding the family. To women, however, what they study is nothing

serious for their future lives.

In the second place, some work is more suitable for an appointed gender. For

instance, nurse schools are open to women only, and infants’ schools like female teachers better. This is all because they are more careful and patient,

and less aggressive in nature. By contrast, men fit the job like steel worker

and police officer because of their braveness, haleness, and decisiveness.

From my comments above,

you can tell that it is unreasonable for universities

and colleges to accept the same number of men and women to study in every subject, due to differences in their natures. It is free for everyone to choose their own way, and no one can force others to get into a certain field.

5.Some people said the government shouldn't put money on building theaters and sports stadiums; they should spend more money on medical care and education. Agree or not disagree? 范文

1Recently, a criticism often heard is that the government tends to put too much money on building theaters and sports stadiums. They maintain that medical care and education would benefit the citizens and the country much more. However, I advocate building more theaters and arenas. Numerous circumstances lead to the value of building theaters and areas, but here are two main reasons:

What strikes me most of all is that theaters and sports stadiums provide ideal places for people to build up a world of relaxation. After five days of hardwork, people can refresh themselves by taking physical exercises and enjoining a football game there. Meanwhile, exercises is to health what water is to fish. The physical exercises can benefit people’

s health, which will surely ease the pressure of medical care. Moreover, it provides people a good opportunity to communicate with each other, which will benefit people’s mental health.

Beyond this, it is also of paramount importance to use theaters and museums as the “social classroom” of culture and history education. The Sydney Opera House, which is the mother and father of all modern landmark buildings, has come to define not only a city, but also an entire nation and continent. The opera house shows the concept of modernism and the never properly finished inside provides visitors with a story of its creator Jorn Utzon. In addition, the performances which

contain the soul of human civilization shown in the theaters will also greatly enrich the lives of people from all over the world. Certainly, medical care and education both play dominant roles, but building theaters and sports stadiums will benefit not only the individual both mentally and physically, but a nation and continent permanently

Theatres and sports stadiums are facilities with the purpose of enriching peoples spiritual life. However, some people claim that the government should spend more money on medical care and education rather than on such recreational programs.

As a matter of fact, these people fail to realize the essence of this issue. I disagree with this statement for the following reasons. First, with the development of society, the basic material needs for people has mainly satisfied, a more important task for the government is to improve people’s

spiritual life. Human beings differ from other animal species in that we live not only for prolonging our lives, but also for spiritual pursuit.

Second, entertainment projects contribute to the development of economy, as well as collect money to solve people’

s basic needs. An typical example can be found in the fact that every country is eager to win the right of hold the Olympics mainly because of the economic benefits it brings. Another example is that many sports and cultural activities have donated a considerable amount of fun for benefic projects.

Last but not least, entertainment and cultural services also play an important role in education as well as improvement of people’

s health. As the living standards improve, people tend to not only go to school for education, but also go to theatres to receive another fom of education. Sport facilities such as stadiums provide opportunities for people to exercise their body.

According to the reasons I give above, it can be concluded that entertainment and

cultural constructions are worth building. The statement that government shouldn’t put money on them is invalid.

6. Some people say that people should have different amount of holiday

according to their job. To what extent do you agree or disagree to this opinion?

The development of industrialization and the amazing improvement of working efficiency render people more chances to enjoy holidays in the current society. Suppose you are making a trip to a place totally strange to you, the first thing you do is to find yourself accommodation and lodging. But you will feel disappointed the moment you arrive with the situation that all the hotels, restaurants, stores and even banks are closed because of an important holiday, such as Christmas day or Thanksgiving. At this moment, you are in the same boat as Robinson Crusoe, who was abandoned on a lonely island without any help or hope. (107 words)

To erase the embarrassment, some corporations and governments work out some flexible and feasible holiday policies, providing people with convenience. Shifting is often adopted by factories and manufacturers because it guarantees timely fulfillment of production targets and orders on the one hand and gives employees sufficient time for relaxation on the other. If needed, employees have to work overtime, with a bonus as a compensation for the holiday they missed. (70 words)

For banks and other public services, things are quite different. Holidays are prime time for supermarkets, department stores, restaurants and retailers. Some people like holding parties or having feasts with their friends at the weekend, and other people prefer to go shopping in department stores, which will take great profits to merchandisers. With large amounts of cash flow, banks have to keep open from Monday to Sunday. (65 words)

Teachers enjoy very long holidays during an academy year because they can

prepare their lectures and lessons for the new semester and relax themselves in the holiday. Long holidays are not only beneficial to teachers’ health but also to the students. (41 words)

Considering the different characteristics of people’s employments, I think that different people should have different amounts of holidays. At the first sight, this idea sounds unfair. But on second thoughts, it is reasonable and understandable. (37 words) (319 words totally) 7. Nowadays there are various methods to relieve the pressure in modern life. Some read or exercise, others work in their gardens. What do you think are the best ways of reducing stress?

During the past decades great difference to salary and other material things led to the same weight of pressure to modern people. It's too hard to bear it that many people even chose killing themselves. In this article I am going to introduce some effective relaxing ways to readers.

In the first place the reading is chosen to free our minds. A good book will do a pretty well job to some people especially the clerisy. People suffered from the pressure caused by boss, taxes and such bores may feel themselves released when they are reading books.

There are also other kinds of methods that can do this work, such as exercise, gardening and tour. As it comes to me, wild adventure is also a good function to release myself. Sometimes I will go to some famous mountains and interesting places. As you can see, it is not difficult to find such places in China. In the last National Day vocation I went to the Thaibaishan Mountain, a well-known mountain which is located miles of Xi'an city in Western Shanxi Province. It is famous not only for its height (about 4,000metres) but also because of great scenes that can be seen from the top of the mountain and the history that it was once a volcano thousands of years ago. I think I was entirely struck by magnificent scene near the great lake on the top (in fact it is a crater). Even now I could remember the moment the sun jumped out from the horizon! Feeling like standing on the top of the world I felt so comfortable that as if I have got rid of all the pressure of my courses.

In a word, I prefer choosing the reading and wild adventure as my favorite ways to reduce stress on me. I do recommend these two ways to other guys who are sad and has lost his confidence on his work because I think both of them did play effectively.

9.Although it is a freedom to use tobacco while some people think it should be made illegal as the same way as other drugs. To what extent do you agree or disagree? What’s your opinion?

Medically, tobacco has been told distinguishingly from drugs. Nevertheless, there has been an on-going argument about whether or not tobacco should be made illegal as drugs. After close inspection, I would like to support the legalization of tobacco for the following reasons.

The main reason is that tobacco is an absolutely different concept from drugs in terms of the toxicity. Drugs, such as heroin, can drive people who take it insane and out of mind. And the damage is both mental and physical. In contrast, despite all those tobacco-related diseases, tobacco do far less harm to people than drugs do. What’s more, in our daily life, many other things are doing potential damage to people. For instance, chemical detergent pollute the underground water and vegetable, causing the toxin to accumulate in our body. Therefore, judging only by the number of diseases tobacco will bring won’t be a reasonable method; we can’t equate tobacco with drugs.

In the second place, smoking has been part of life of many people. Most male smokers admit that they will get refreshed after taking a cigarette, especially when hard work is just over. Some old people smoke just for relaxation and killing the time. Lao She, a famous Chinese litterateur, said that he wouldn’t have got inspiration until smoking a cigarette. And, surprisingly, he has lived a long life of 92 years! It’s evident that the saying: smoking will shorten people’s life is unnecessarily true.

What is still worth mentioning is that tobacco has been a pillar industry in some countries. For those economies, a majority of trade volume comes from the export of tobacco. Besides, the sum of taxes handed in by tobacco businesses is huge and can be used in the domestic instruction. Suppose that, some day, tobacco is forbidden and made illegal, which means a collapse of the gigantic industry and millions of laid-off workers.

From what has been cited above, we may safely draw the conclusion that tobacco can never ever made illegal. However, there are still some efforts we can make: printing the words—smoking is harmful to your health—on the package of cigarette.

10. Many families are having fewer children. Having even just one child can have a dramatic impact on the parents' lives.

\to expectant parents-and they are right!

It will be a long time before those parents can again sleep late in the morning. A baby wakes early, screaming for food. The toddler thinks 6 a.m. is the right time to start the day. After that comes early school mornings.

It will be years before the parents can go anywhere together on the spur of the moment. Every outing must be planned ahead so that a baby-sitter can be found. The budget will be stretched, the work load will get heavier, and by the time parents can be alone, they may be too tired to talk.

Still, people want children. The reasons are explained as follows. One reason is that children are a link to the future. They will probably be here after the parents are gone. In addition, their children will live after them.

A deeper reason for wanting children, perhaps, is that the more people we have to love, the more fulfilled our lives can be. By giving birth to a child, people enrich their own lives. In the end, we live not only for ourselves, but for others.

After all, having children brings both positive and negative effects. What we must do is to ensure that the positive ones are encouraged and negative ones are eliminated as far as possible.

11. Many problems in schools are aroused by the attitudes of students. How do these problems form? What should we do to change the situation?

School violence becomes very protrusive in many countries, most of which are caused by the attitudes of students. Some governments and the authorities show great concerns about the problems. From my point of view, these problems are aroused by three factors, the development of society, the influence of family and media and the weakness of school education.

The rapid development of the society offers more opportunities for the young students to contact the outside world. Due to the lack of social experience, some youngsters are not capable of distinguishing right from wrong. Curiosity drives them into imitating what they see on TV or from

the people around them. Therefore, it is easy for them to be addicted to alcohol, smoking and drugs. Some students even smoke and take drugs at school.

Family violence is another major factor causing problems in schools. Family violence hurt children both physically and psychologically. Physically, family violence will hurt their tender body because children are still in the stage of development. Psychologically, physical punishment will hurt children's self-confidence and make them have a tendency of violence. Recently, school gunshots hit the headlines frequently, which should partly attribute to family violence.

Finally, the weakness of school education is another factor causing school problems. Some schools only stress students' achievements in their study, neglecting their moral education. Therefore, even some top students are apt to step onto the criminal road.

To solve these problems, I think we should take the following measures. Firstly, schools should strengthen students' moral education, giving them correct directions and cultivating their ability to tell right from wrong. Secondly, parents should spare some time to communicate with their children, resolving difficulties and troubles for them timely. If the school and family can join hands in solving these problems, I think the students will develop healthily and the environment in schools will become much clearer. (306 words)

12.Computers are widely used in education, and some people think teachers do not play any important roles in the classroom. To what extent do you agree?

范文1:Computers can be a good aid to teachers in the classroom but they can never take the place of teachers.

1. An important role of teachers is to encourage students to learn. However, computers are not capable of this spiritual encouragement.

A teacher will notice that a student is not interested in a certain subject and does not listen carefully in class. The teacher will talk with this student after class and find out the reasons why this student is not

interested. Then the teacher can tell the student the importance of this subject and motivate the student to learn harder.

2. Teachers have different approaches to teaching different students and will adjust the content or style of teaching according to the needs of different students. However computers only have fixed programs. A teacher can even design a tailor-made study plan for a particular student according to his or her needs. But computers view every student as the same individual.

3. Apart from academic teaching, teachers are also concerned about the psychological growth of students and often teach students about moral integrity. In contrast, computers are just machines and do not have feelings or emotions.

Teachers will teach students about such virtues as love, honesty, moral integrity and friendship etc.

4. Computers are machines after all and machines break down sometimes. If students depend too much on computers for studying, they will feel at a loss when these machines go wrong and don not work properly 5. Learning and teaching is a highly interactive process. Different students will have different questions during different stages of teaching and learning. And the teachers will have to answer them accordingly and in different ways. But computer programs are pre-designed by programmers without knowing all the varying circumstances during real teaching and learning and therefore cannot give satisfactory answers to all these questions.

Teachers can use computers as a very good aide in the classroom for presenting multimedia files. Teachers and computers can co-exist in the classroom peacefully. Teachers and computers can be a perfect match in the classroom. For example, in a listening lab equipped with computers, students will be able to record the listening materials in a CD-Rom and then take home to listen more.

Computer, the most exciting and significant invention in 20 century, will reshape our lives and our world. As a result, some people proclaim that computers should be involved into our classroom, and replace the roles of human teachers. However, I cannot agree with their point of view.

Admittedly, as useful tools, computers can become the optimum assistants for human teachers in the classroom. To begin

with, vivid pictures shown on screen can motivate students’ interest and curiosity dramatically. Moreover, the combination of computers and Internet can provide children the abundant information. Although c

omputers enjoy considerable merits, they cannot compare with human teachers for two main reasons.

Among countless factors which influence my inclination, there is a most conspicuous one: computers are not as qualified as human teachers in academic fields. As we all know, students can get the final result of a mathematic question with the help of computers, however, they are still confused in the whole computing process. By contrast, our human teachers’ performance is much better in those cases. They not can not only

teach students how to analyze and compute the question, but also can remind them what are the possible errors that they may meet. Thus, human teachers are more adequate than computers in academic aspect. The second advantage of human teachers is that

they can guide students to deal with some psychological problems that they meet in schools. In China, sometimes, teachers even assume many responsibilities that students’ parents have. For example, to the student with rebellious spirit, the important duty for teachers is to prevent the student from campus violence, even crime. Obviously, computers cannot do that.

From what has been discussed above, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that the positions of human teachers are unshakable, and computers cannot take the places of them.

13.The one who do not know how to use computer become more and more disadvantageous. Show the disadvantages and what action should government take?

Computer plays such an important role nowadays that it undeniably becomes the biggest concern of the present-day world as a whole. With the steady growth in the hi-tech, as well as computer, there is a growing tendency that man who does not know how to use the computer will become an illiterate. As far as I am concerned, there are several major disadvantages for these people.

In the first place, without computer's help, someone may waste a large amount of precious time to pay attention to complex calculation. It is believed that computer can do almost everything. It was gradually used not only in mathematics, physics, chemistry and astronomy, but in places like library hospital and military army to replace the works of man. Besides, a computer works much faster and more accurately than man. Therefore, one who cannot use the computer always fails to keep up with the development of modern society.

In addition, these kinds of people may lose opportunities that make new

friends or contact with outside world and new technology. It is very clear that lots of changes have taken place in many aspects of people's lives because of the coming of the computer era. Multi-media and surfing on-line provide people with chances to learn more about the world and up-dated information. Moreover, sending E-mail seems to be the most convenient and efficient way to communicate with families, relatives and best friends. Unfortunately all above will never happen in the life of the layman. In order to let everyone know about the computer skills, government should set forth solutions to eliminate the number of these kinds of illiterates. First and foremost, it is suggested to open more free related training classes, which can encourage people to cultivate the interest of using computers. What's more, it is stylish to advertise the benefits to learn the computer.

All in all, the future for the computer is very promising. We hardly imagine what our world would be like without the computers.

14.People spend a great deal of time, money, and energy to see or read about movie stars, TV actors, and athletes. What role do such celebrities play in society? Write an essay of about 250 words. Give specific examples.

People spend a great deal of time, money, and energy to see or read about movie stars, TV actors, singers, and athletes. Such celebrities often become idols. Posters, T-shirts, fan clubs, and attendance at live performances prove that. What do celebrities do to merit this attention? Celebrities create excitement. They create excitement because they have done something or can do something that supposedly not everyone else can do. Raising a child, waking early to go to work each morning, building a home and a place in the community-these achievements actually deserve more admiration than rolling through Beverly Hills in a limousine or jetting across the Atlantic to star in a new movie. Yet because these achievements are part of many people's everyday lives, they are not considered special. Celebrities help us dream by lifting us out of our everyday lives and imagining ourselves doing other than everyday activities.

Celebrities also set styles. They become models for behavior, clothing, and hairdos. Just consider Elvis Presley or the Beatles, for example. Celebrities also influence politics, as Bob Hope and Robert Redford have done.

Celebrities' roles as \the reason for the attention many of us lavish on them. In many ways, the celebrities of today have merely replaced the kings and queens of old.

1.With the fast pace of globalization, the whole world has become a global village with combination of different cultures. What are the reasons for losing a variety of languages and cultures? Think of some solution to alleviate the problem.(8月29日预测中,不重要了)

(Sample 1) The progression of globalization is inevitable and undeniable. It has been widely noted that many of the world’s languages and cultures are dying out. To seek the solution, we should take a closer look at the causes first.

Most important of all is the objective reason. The essence of

globalization is commercialization and centralization. It is convenient in communication that some prevalent languages and cultures have its predominance, which makes superior of the senior and inferiority of the junior. That leads to deterioration of some minors. These languages and cultures will be overlooked and devalued until they completely die out.

As concave and convex sides of a nutshell, it has subjective reason. With the burgeoning of some VIPs, many migrants have swarmed into the

dreamlands due to economic drive and stimulation, meanwhile engaged in local culture perspective and discarding their native languages and cultures as a ‘betrayal’.

Hence this is a problem which must be solved as soon as possible. We should remind the world of versatility of the minor cultures through popular media such as music, artifacts or historical heritage, thus renovating the music festivals artistic activities and museums. In addition, let more people, especially the young men, use their own language.

Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing. We make the purpose, to prevent losing world’s cultural and linguistic diversity. “This way a long, tapering, strip of bark can be peeled up to the length of the tree, leaving the tree to heal and continue to grow,” says the United Nations Environment Programme Report.

(Sample 2)

With the pacing the world, globalization is no longer a myth. Nowadays, it is growing at a terrific speed. Each country has combined to be a global village. Languages and cultures are penetrating each other and we are losing a variety of them. There are several reasons for this phenomenon.

The first reason can be seen is that the great flow of migration.

Globalization has helped open the world’s borders, permitting more and more people in small countries to immigrate to other big countries. As the need of working and living, they have to mix new culture with their own culture and use the new language more often. Gradually, they lose their own custom.

The development of technology and economy, however, is the most important factor. The high-tech products in developed countries possess a leading position in the international market due to the globalization. Almost all the people in the world are enjoying the benefits of these products and more multinational corporations are emerging. This is not only a high-tech penetration but also a cultural invasion. People begin to be interested in these developed countries in an earlier age. They learn the language and culture of these countries, which will aid them to find a good job in the multinational corporations.

To alleviate the dilemma, the following suggestions should be taken into consideration. In each country, a variety of cultural festivals should be held at a regular time such as poem or music festivals. Through this way, the traditional culture will be kept from generation to generation. Government should pose the consciousness of preserving traditional culture for inhabitants.

In the final analysis, we should keep our own language and culture with the fast pace of globalization.

2.Extended family

For many years the nuclear family, consisting of father, mother, and children, was considered to be the normal family pattern in China's society. Yet in many other cultures and in our own in the past, three generations--grandparents, parents, and children--often have lived together. What are the advantages and disadvantages of three generations living together? Give specific examples in a 250-word essay.

Three generations living together can have both financial and personal advantages. On the other hand, it can also have personal disadvantages. In years past and today, three generations have probably lived together mostly out of economic necessity or advantage. Sometimes a young family moves in with the older generation because the husband and wife can't afford a place of their own. Sometimes grandparents move in because they aren't well enough or can't afford to live alone anymore. Occasionally, grandparents come to take care of the children so both parents can work. In the past, and sometimes today, three generations have lived together

because they all depended on the same farm or business. Usually these arrangements do help solve financial and practical problems. Everyone has a roof over his or her head. Children and old people in need of care are likely to get it. Often a family can get ahead financially by sharing the work and the bills. In addition, a strong sense of family and of belonging can develop in everyone.

What may be harder to work out are questions of who's in charge. If grandparents don't let go of some authority, the middle generation is likely to resent it. On the other hand, ailing grandparents may force their children to be parents to them and to their own children as well. If parents and grandparents disagree on discipline, children may be confused or angry.

The personal disadvantages can be overcome. For three generations to live together successfully, everyone's needs must be respected. 1.Some people say that children should be disciplined in their early age, and punishment should be used. To some extent do you agree? What kind of punishment can be used by teachers and parents?

There is dispute over whether the punishment has to be used to discipline the children in their early age. Some maintain that punishment will do nothing to young and forcing ideas upon them is useless, whereas others are confident that it is one of the most efficient means to discipline children. For my part, I share the latter point of view, and I give two major reasons why this is so:

First, punishment can teach children right from wrong. Everyone was born with no consciousness of right and wrong, he or she should be taught through such proper method as punishment, which is a direct way to make one sure what he did has lead to a bad result. Since that, punishment gives child a strong impression and lets him be well disciplined initially. Second, punishment can teach them a lesson to prevent similar mistake from happening. According to the first reason I have mentioned, we know that punishment can influence children deeply and make them be aware if they do wrong again.

However, we should encourage mental punishment rather than corporal one, which will lead to children’s anger and disgust towards parents’ opinion. Some children, for example, become furious for corporal punishment and leave apart from their parents without being disciplined. The detailed methods include distraction of their pocket money, allocation of more house work or deprivation of their entertainment time to some extent. No matter what kind of methods we take, it’s worth mentioning that children should not be deprived of their basic human rights through punishment.

Although each coin has two sides, weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I’m inclined to agree with latter point of view, as the latter
