Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something that has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand what he wants to teach them, and what he wants them to learn from him.

What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.

Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a decaying leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something—all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us. 1. An artist hopes that the public will _____. A. understand him and learn from him

B. notice only shapes and colors in his work

C. teach him something D. believe what he says in his work 正确答案:A

2. It is hard to explain what a painter is saying, because he/ she ____. A. does not express himself /herself well B. uses unusual words and phrases

C. uses shapes and colors instead of words D. does not say anything clearly 正确答案:C

3. The writer points out that contemporary artists might say their choices of subject _____. A. carry a message to the public B. only provide interesting patterns

C. have no pattern or form D. teach the public important truths 正确答案:B

4. The writer also points out that contemporary art contains ____.

A. nothing but meaningless patterns B. uninteresting aspects of the world C. subjects chosen partly for their meanings D. completely meaningless subjects 正确答案:A

5. What is implied in this passage?

A. A painting is more easily understood than a symphony. B. Art is merely the arranging of shape and color. C. Every artist tries to say something to the public.

D. One must look beyond shape and color to find what the artist is saying.

(2)

It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstanding between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crisis; that they talk too much about certain problems — and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationship.

I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.

Young people often irritate parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents; this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste.

Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they did approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog(处于劣势者): you can't win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents' control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself.

If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can impress others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.

6 This passage is primarily meant for____________. A. parents

B. teenagers C. educators

7 The first paragraph is mainly about____________. A. the teenagers' criticism of their parents

B. the misunderstandings between teenagers and their parents C. the parent'complaints about their children

D. the dominance of the parents over their children 正确答案:A

解析:文章第一段的主题句是“It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstanding between them.”,因此选项A是正确答案。

8 Teenagers tend to have strange clothes and hairstyles because they ____________. A. want to irritate their parents

B. have a strong desire to be leaders in style and taste C. have no other way to enjoy themselves better

D. want to show their existence by creating a culture of their own 正确答案:D

解析:文章第三段中第四句话“So they create a culture and society of their own.”

9 Teenagers do not want their parents to approve of whatever they do because they________.

A. have a desire to be independent

B. feel that they are superior in a small way to the adults C. are not likely to win over the adults

D. have already been accepted into the adult world 正确答案:A

10 To improve parent-child relationships, teenagers are advised to be____________. A. obedient B. independent C. responsible D. cooperative 正确答案:D

解析:文章最后一段第一句话“If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan.” (3)

The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: \

In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus(剩余的) bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on, food deliveries have ceased; fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country.

The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food

preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed — natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ...

What refrigeration did promote was marketing — marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.

Consequently, most of the world's fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away(不断地嗡嗡作响) continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintain an artificially-cooled space inside and artificially-heated house — while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge.

The fridge's effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don't believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet(橱柜) and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at least you?ll get rid of that terrible hum.

11 The statement “In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily.” (Para. 2) suggest that____________ .

A. the author was well-fed and healthy even without a fridge in his fifties B. the author was not accustomed to using fridges even in his fifties C. there was no fridge in the author's home in the 1950s

D. the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s 正确答案:C

12 Why does the author say that nothing was wasted before the invention of fridges? A. People would not buy more food than was necessary. B. Food was delivered to people two or three times a week. C. Food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily. D. People had effective ways to preserve their food. 在文章第二段中作者说“nothing was wasted”,并在第三段中给出原因——“a vast way of well-tried techniques already existed(存在许多被证明有效的方法)”, 所以选项D——“人们用各种有效的方法来保存食物”为正确答案。 13 Who benefited the least from fridges according to the author? A. Inventors.

B. Consumers. C. Manufacturers.

D. Traveling salesmen(巡回推销员).

14 Which of the following phrases in Para.5 indicates the fridge's negative effect on the environment?

A. \

15 What is the author's overall attitude toward fridges? A. Neutral. B. Critical. C. Objective.

D. Compromising.

1 The time will come ____________ man can fly____________ he likes in the universe. A. how ... whereB. when ... whereverC. where ... whereD. what ... which 正确答案:B

2 Is this museum ____________you visited a few days ago? A. whereB. thatC. on whichD. the one 正确答案:D

3 She is waiting for the doctor ____________ I know will not come. A. whom B. whoC. whichD. that 正确答案:B

4 Is this the place ____________the exhibition was held? A. whereB. thatC. on whichD. the one 正确答案:A 解析:此句中主句的主、谓、宾俱全,从句部分为句子的状语,表示地点,既可用副词where,又可用介词in + which 引导地点状语。

5 — Who is John Smith? — He is the speaker ____________ heard last week. A. which we would haveB. we would haveC. weD. we had 正确答案:C

6 I recognized her____________I saw her. A. the instant (that) B. afterC. if notD. unless 正确答案:A

7 ____________the 1500's____________the first Europeans explored the coast of California.

A. It was not until ... whenB. It is until ... thatC. It is not until ... whenD. It was not until ... that

解析:此题考查“It be not until ... that”引导的时间状语从句,意为“直到……

8 He was willing to speak to the reporters____________ he was not identified. A. on condition thatB. in caseC. suppose thatD. for fear that 正确答案:A

9 ____________he works hard, I don't mind when he finishes the experiment.

A. As soon asB. As well asC. So far asD. So long as 正确答案:D 解析:本题的选项D为引导条件状语从句的连接词,而选项A、B和C都不符合句子的意思。

10 We'll visit Europe next year ____________we have enough money.

11 The reason we're so late is ____________.

A. for the car breaks downB. due to the car breaking downC. that the car broke downD. because the car broke down 正确答案:C

12 Do ____________you are told; otherwise you will be punished. A. thatB. whatC. whichD. whom 正确答案:B

13 This is ____________ I want to tell you. A. it B. thatC. whichD. what 正确答案:D

14 Students in his class cannot understand ____________.

A. what does the sentence meanB. what means this sentenceC. what this sentence meansD. what is the meaning of the sentence 正确答案:C

15 We don't doubt ____________ he can make a good job of it. A. ifB. thatC. whatD. why 正确答案:B

16 The young driver looked over the engine carefully lest it____________on the way. A. goes wrongB. should go wrongC. went wrongD. would go wrong 正确答案:B

“may/might/can/could/should +动词原形”,因此正确答案为B。

17 It's already 5 o'clock now. Don't you think it's about time____________? A. we are going home B. we go homeC. we went homeD. we can go home 正确答案:C

解析:此句是特殊型虚拟语气中的it is time 型,即“It is(high,about)time that ...”

18 I'd rather you____________make any comment on the issue for the time being. A. don'tB. wouldn'tC. shouldn'tD. didn't 正确答案:D 解析:此句是特殊型虚拟语气中的would rather 型,指在would(had)rather,would(just)as soon,had better,would sooner后所接的that 从句中谓语动词要用过去时,表示当时或将来的虚拟情况,可译作“宁愿……”,因此正确答案为D。

19 We didn't know his telephone number, otherwise we____________him.

A. would have telephonedB. must have telephonedC. would telephoneD. had telephoned 正确答案:A

20 ____________,we will set off as we planned.

A. Were it good or badB. Be it good or badC. Being good or bad D. Whether good or bad 正确答案:B

这是倒装省略结构,补全省略部分应为“whether it is good or bad ...”。

And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, and her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle. I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would

be something precious, something perhaps even better than love,a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful.

3 A typical American seems to be____________to a typical Japanese. A. sensitive and rude

B. insensitive but not rude C. sensitive instead of rude D. insensitive and even rude 正确答案:D

Your success in your studies will also depend upon your motivation(动机). This need or desire to achieve a certain goal can make the difference between success and failure. Motivation can come from two sources:from inside of you or from outside of you. In the first case, motivation comes from your hopes and expectations, from your desire to do something or to be someone. Study purposes that result from personal inner desires are individual, and various. If you have not already done so,you should think carefully about what you hope to gain from your studies, and why. You should set a goal and direct all your study efforts toward reaching it. A goal of this kind is important because it will determine the direction and degree of your motivation for study.

Not everyone is highly motivated from within and no one is continuously motivated from within. Fortunately there is another source of motivation:from outside. In education the most obvious kind of outside motivation is grades. For many students, course grades are an immediate,short-range motivation for study. This is one of the reasons for

examinations and grades, but they must not become a goal in themselves. Grades help to motivate you from day to day,but they are only small, artificial steps to your ultimate goal. It would be wrong to set grades as your only ambition.

A textbook like this cannot provide you with motivation;that must come from yourself. But as an encouragement,it is useful to know that good study habits depend upon good motivation. And good study habits are important because they help you get more done in less time. It is not a matter of how much you study;more important is how well you study. 6 Inside motivation comes from____________. A. your need and desire

B. your hopes and expectations

C. your desire to do something or to be someone D. both B and C D。 7 Study purposes____________. A. are different from person to person B. are personal inner desires C. share some common points D. should be carefully made 正确答案:A

8 If you haven't set a goal in your studies,____________. A. you will most probably become a failure B. you will never be a good student

C. you may lose direction and lack motivation D. you won't have good study habits 正确答案:C

9 According to the passage, why are examinations and grades necessary in education? A. Because they can make the difference between success and failure. B. Because they can motivate many students to study harder.

C. Because they can check what you have gained from your studies. D. Because they are small, artificial steps to an ultimate goal.

B。

10 If you want to be an efficient learner, you must____________. A. have clear study purposes

B. be always motivated from both inside and outside C. set grades as your ambition D. have good study habits 正确答案:D

Although America is such a huge country, traveling is really very quick and easy. There are three ways to get across the country without a car:planes, trains and buses. Air travel is the most expensive of the three but in many ways the easiest and most comfortable. There are hundreds of flights a day crossing the country, and it is easy to make a reservation(预订). Traveling by train is cheaper than by airplane. But it costs more than by bus and there are few passenger(旅客)trains. On the trains there are dining cars and bars where meals are served quickly. If you are spending the night on the train you can pay for a \which is a small room with a bed and a toilet. The most inexpensive way to travel is by bus. There are fast bus services between cities, for example, the Greyhound Bus Service. You can buy special tickets that allow you unlimited travel for a certain period of time. In this way you can stop along the way to visit the places that interest you most.

If you need to travel long distances frequently, however, you'll have to decide which way is the most suitable for you.Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours. It is almost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading is only a partial solution. During the day, sleep comes in snatches(瞬间). At night, when you really wish to go to sleep, you rarely manage to do so. Inevitably you arrive at you destination almost exhausted. Long car journeys are even less pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can,at least, travel safely at high speeds, but the greater part of the journey is spent on narrow, bumpy roads that are crowded with traffic.

By comparison, trip by sea offers a great variety of civilized comforts. You can stretch your legs on the spacious decks(甲板),play games, swim, meet interesting people and enjoy good food. However,if the sea is rough, you are likely to get seasick. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea journeys take a long time.

(3)

Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?

Despite huge differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.

A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.

Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high-voltage transformers (变压器), heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.

The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more meaningful?

Heroes are catalysts (催化剂) for change. They have a vision from the mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated (隔离的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large-scale change to take place without leaders with

attractive personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.

11 What does the first sentence \worship.\

13 According to the fourth paragraph, in what sense are heroes like high-voltage transformers?

A. They instruct and inspire different cultures with their deeds. B. They set very good examples for ordinary people to follow.

C. Their characteristics give ordinary people strength and confidence. D. They receive high energy and transform it into heroic action.

14 In which of the following aspects famous people are different from heroes? A. Heroes go beyond mere fame.

B. Famous people serve only their own fame. C. They are willing to live different lives. D. Both A and B. 正确答案:D

15 It can be inferred from the last paragraph that____________. A. heroes quicken the speed of historical changes B. heroes change possibilities into reality

C. historical changes are impossible without heroes

D. heroes with attractive personalities will certainly bring about large-scale change 正确答案:A
