While it is most sports fans' favorite part of watching their team compete, shouting out insulting words or encouragement doesn't actually help them win matches, new research suggests.
An experiment conducted earlier this month, provided an answer accidentally to the question whether cheering does actually have an effect on either team's performance.
Originally, the study project started by Brenna Boyd, a research assistant working under a professor in the School of Architectural Engineering, aimed to settle a long-standing argument in American college football over which team has the loudest stadium. She also hoped her study would determine whether crowd noise is harmful to the communications on the field. But since she's more into hockey than football, she did her later experiment in college hockey stadiums.
Boyd and her classmates measured noise levels during college hockey games, including four played by their home team--University of Nebraska team at Omaha's Century Link Centre from November 2014 through to March this year.
For the loudest game, the average loudness equivalent level in the student section was 95.5 decibels(分贝)。the equivalent of hearing a jackhammer from 50 feet away - with a peak of 132 decibels, the equivalent of a jet engine about 100 feet away.
Ms Boyd's team found that noise levels in the student section were generally louder than the others. However, when the noise levels were analyzed carefully together with events in the game, they found that there wasn't a strong connection between decibel level and goals scored by the home team. "There wasn't enough data to see whether loudness was connected with how many goals they achieved during the game. And this conclusion actually attracted a lot more attention than I had expected. "Said Ms Boyd.
In surveys given to the players after each match, Ms Boyd found that the majority reported that the crowd was loud but not that distracting - "about 70 per cent between silent and loud" - and that the noise levels didn't prevent them from communicating with their teammates or coach while in play.
25. When Brenna Boyd was planning her project, she wanted to find out
A. the average loudness of noise during college hockey games
B. which college team stadium has the loudest audience
C. whether cheering affects the outcome of hockey games
D. if sound levels are strongly connected to goals achieved
26. According to this passage, Brenna Boyd_

A. crowd noise is harmful to the player on the field
B. college students are passionate cheering home teams
C. college hockey games are noisier than football games
D. loudness level of a jet engine is higher than a jackhammer
28. The underlined word insulting in Paragraph l can be replaced by_
·4·

It was a secret Eli kept until he was 8 years old.
"He would scream, like we were hurting him when we tried to put a dress on him." recalled Grace, his mother. That was when Eli was an 18-month-old baby girl already rejecting anything female.
Now, Eli's mother and Eli are sharing their story with CBS New York. Eli still remembers being a baby, and rejecting putting on a dress ." Oh, I remember that," he said. "It was like torture." Now Eli is 11 years old. He is, by all accounts, a happy, active boy who never doubted he was born the wrong sex. Eli said to CBS New York. It was hard to keep that secret for 8 years though, "It was kind of hard because I hadn't really told anyone ever," he said.
"He said, 'I have a secret, and the secret is I don't want to be a girl. I think I'm a boy,"'Grace recalled. " . I thought, 'I don't know what we're going to do, but we're going to figure it out."' CBS New York reports that it was a less clear path for Ryan, now a 21-year-old man. He, too, was born female, but never felt like one.
He didn't understand his feelings at the time. Then he learned about what it meant to be transgender on the Internet, and it began to make sense. "It was a relief to know what exactly I was or am," he said.
Ryan's mother said at first it was hard to accept. "It's a scary thing to think about," she said. But she came around. "I was glad my son is able to become the person he needed to be," she said.
Experts say the kind of family support both Ryan and Eli are getting is of great significance. Without it, many transgender kids suffer from anxiety, depression and high rates of suicide.
"We see a lot of kids with a lot of mental health concerns, and we also see that those mental health concerns really reduced when the family is on board," said Jean Malpas of Ackerman Institute for the Family, a non-profit research organization to CBS New York.
Grace said for her it went from a situation that felt really confusing and difficult to one that she now celebrates. "We feel so lucky to have him." she said. .
29. According to the passage, Eli would scream because
A. Eli rejected care and love from parents
B. Eli didn't want to be dressed as a girl
C. Eli didn't want to wear anything at all
D. Eli's parents were torturing their baby
30. Which word can best describe Ryan's feelings before he turned to the Internet?
A. Confused.
B. Angry.
C. Relieved.
D. Confident.
31. This passage is probably taken from .
A. a news report
B. a scientific journal
C. a survey report
D. an academic essay
32. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Many people feel difficult to accept who themselves really are.
B. Knowledge about transgender should be made known to more people.
C. Support from family is important to special groups like the transgender.
D. Many non-profit organizations are trying to help people like Eli and Ryan.

Scientists have overcome a major difficulty for humans to receive life-saving organ transplants from pigs, thanks to a powerful new gene-editing technique.
In a paper in the US journal Science, the researchers described using gene-editing method to remove potentially harmful DNA sequences at 62 locations, which are the remnants(留存之处) of a virus called PERV, from the pig genome.
Globally human organs for transplant being short in supply, researchers and doctors have long hoped that the problem could be solved through the availability of suitable animal organs for transplant, a concept known as xenotransplantation.
Pigs have been especially promising candidates due to their similar size and biological structure to humans.
But one of the largest safety concerns has been the fact that pigs, similar to most mammals, contain PERVs in all their living cells - that are harmless to their native hosts but can cause disease in other species.
“PERVs and the lack of ability to remove them from pig DNA w as a real barrier on the promising stage set for xenotransplantation."
In the new study, scientists made 62 genetic edits to inactivate viruses in pig cells, which they called "an explosive leap forward".
When these cells were then introduced to human cells in the lab, PERV infectivity was reduced by up to one thousand fold, they said.
¨Our work got away the shadow PERVs put above the field more than a decade ago when the virus was discovered, while renewing our faith in xenotransplantation," lead author Luhan Yang, a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard University, said.
The team hopes eventually they can completely root out the risk that PERVs could cause disease in xenotransplantation by using modified pig cells to clone a line of pigs that would have their PERV genes inactivated. "We still have a long way to go, though." Luhan added.
33. From the passage, we may know that____.
A. PERV is found during Luhan Yang's experiments
B. PERV infecting rate has been reduced to l% now
C. the breakthrough is the result of a decade-long project
D. PERV is not a threat to same species in organ transplantation
34. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Explosive materials are used in experiments.
B. Experiments are carried out in 62 locations in US.
C. Further research is still needed in Xenotransplantation.
D. Gene-editing method is used to remove harmful pig organs.
35. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.A big breakthrough in scientific field.
B. Viruses in pig cells are inactivated.
C. Viruses are defeated by scientists.
D. New hope in xenotransplantation.
