Thecompilationoftheexperimentaldataonthisternarysystemby[1995Vil]includesaliquidusprojectionand15verticalsectionsfrom[1977Sch]andpartialisothermalsectionsat1050,800,460,430,427,400,and300°Cfromseveralsources.Subsequenttothethermodynamicassess-mentofthissystemby[1992Cha],newassessmentswerereportedby[1997Feu,2005Lac].
compoundMg2Si(C1,CaF2-typecubic),withnegligibleterminalsolidsolubility.[2000Yan]developedanewthermodynamicdescriptionoftheMg-Sisystemthatusesfewermodelparametersthan[1997Feu].Morerecently,[2004Kev]remodeledtheMg-Sidescriptiontoobtainaphasediagramwithoutanarti cialmiscibilitygapintheliquidphaseathightemperatures,asfoundinthedescrip-tionsof[1997Feu,2000Yan].
BinarySystems
TheAl-Mgphasediagram[2003Cze]hasthefollowingintermediatephases:Mg2Al3(cubic,denotedb),Rore(rhombohedral)andMg17Al12(A12-typecubic,denotedc).TheAl-Siphasediagramisasimpleeutecticsystemwiththeeutecticat577°Cand12.2at.%Si.
IntheMg-Sisystem,[1997Feu]performedcalorimetricstudiestodeterminetheenthalpiesofformationandfusion,andtheheatcapacityofMg2SiandtheenthalpyofmixingofliquidMg-Sialloys.ThenewexperimentalresultswereusedintheoptimizationoftheMg-Siphasediagrambycomputation.Thediagramdepictsastoichiometric
TernaryPhaseEquilibria
Withstartingmetalsof99.999%Al,99.98%Mgand99.999%Si,[1997Feu]induction-meltedalloysamplesunderAratm.Differentialthermalanalysis(DTA)wasdoneatheating/coolingratesbetween2and5°ingthenewdatawiththoseintheliterature(asselectedby[1992Cha]),[1997Feu]reoptimizedthethermodynamicparameters.Theliquid,theface-centeredcubic(fcc)andtheclose-packedhexagonal(cph)phasesweremodeledassingle-latticesubstitutionalsolutions.TheAl-Mgcom-pounds,Mg2SiandSiweretreatedasstoichiometricphases.Ternaryinteractionparametersweredeterminedfortheliquidphase.TheearlierdescriptionoftheAl-Mgphasediagram[1990Sau],whichincludesanuncon rmedcom-poundf,wasused.This,however,didnotchangethecomputedresultsintheAl-richregion.InFig.1-4,thefourverticalsectionsat95,90,85and80mass%Al
respectively

computedby[1997Feu]arecomparedwiththeirownDTAdataonsolidi cationtemperatures.Theagreementwiththeexperimentaldataisgood.
[2005Lac]carriedoutanewthermodynamicassessmentofthissystem,whichusestherevisedAl-Mgdescriptionwithonlythethreeintermediatephases,Mg2Al3(b),eandc.Theyusedalargersetofdatafortheliquid-solidequilibriafromtheexperimentalresultsof[1977Sch,1997Feu].Temperature-independentternaryinteractionparameterswereobtainedfortheliquidphase.Apartialliquidusprojectionandthreeverticalsectionsat5and85mass%Aland2mass%Sirespectivelywerecomputedby[2005Lac].Theverticalsectionat2mass%SiisredrawninFig.5.Theagreementwiththeexperimentalresultsof[1977Sch,1931Los]issatisfactory.
Theeutecticmaximum(e3)ofthereactionL$ðAlÞþMg2SidoesnotlieontheAl-Mg2SijoinbutontheMg-richsideofthisline[1992Cha,1997Feu,2001Bar,2005Lac].ThepartialliquidusprojectioninFig.6depictstheaboveunivariantlinedeterminedby[2001Bar].Otherrecentreferencesonthephaseequilibriaofthissysteminclude[1999Esk,2002Fro,2003Erm,2003Roo,2004Liu,2005Don].
