What's wrong with the girl's answer? She didn't 21 a compliment(恭维) in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, "Thank you" instead of "No". She 22 understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest(谦虚的). In the 23 ,people will feel proud and 24 when they are praised. So if someone says the 25 you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, " Thank you.”

In our country we think being modest is a virtue(美德)and being proud is a bad thing. But in my opinion, being confident does not 26 being proud, so sometimes you should be confident 27 being modest.

28 you are modest and say,"No, I’m afraid I can't do it well" while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say "No", you will certainly be looked down upon by 29 . When asking for a job, if one says something like" Yes, I can certainly do it" instead of" Let me have a try" , he or she will 30 to get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence.

Passage Three

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem. “ Every grain on the plate comes from hard work (谁知盘中餐粒粒皆辛苦)”. But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.

A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

Do we have too much food? No, According to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010. especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.

Chinese people are well known for being generous (慷慨的). Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.

Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired (开除) because she took some leftover (剩余的) food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and agreed that it was not right to waste food.

What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food. Here are some tips:

※ Do not order too much in a restaurant. Only order what you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.

※ Don’t be too picky about food. Some food may not taste great. But your body needs it.

Passage Four

It’s easier to agree than disagree. The following suggestions can help keep disagreements constructive (建设性的).

Don’t make it personal.

If you get upset, it can help to remember that you’re mad at the person’s idea, not the person himself.

Never criticize the other person’s idea.

Instead of saying “That’s a stupid idea!”, try: “I don’t agree, and here’s why.” Never shout loudly and you’ll have a much better chance of getting your idea across.

Use “I” statements to communicate how you feel and what you think.

Using “you” statements can sound argumentative(好争论的). For example, telling your mom “You always remind me about my chores when I have a lot of homework” has a very different tone (语气) from “I’m under pressure because I have a lot of homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?”

Listen to the other point of view.

When the other person is talking, try to stop thinking about why you disagree or what you’ll say next. Instead, focus on what’s being said. When it’s your turn to talk, repeat any key points the other person made to show you have paid attention to what was said. Then calmly express why you disagree.

Stay calm.

This is the most important thing you can do to keep a conversation go on well.

42. What should we do when the other person is talking according to the passage?

A. Think about why we disagree.

B. Pay attention to what he’s saying.
