Why I’ve chosen joy

“Well, ten years ago there were several others besides myself who bet you wouldn’t be around today.”

Those aren’t the most comforting words you want to hear roll off the end of your family doctor’s tongue.Nevertheless,he had thrown out the words and there was no reeling (卷) them in.

That was a few years back and I guess most people are still in awe (敬畏) of my continued existence.

“What is it you’ve got?”

“I have multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化症).” “How long have you had it?” “I’ve had it for over 36 years.”

I have multiple sclerosis and I am always happy to inform those who ask and are interested.I’m not proud of it.I don’t like it,but I am blessed because of it and I have learned much through the years.

This seized the myelin (髓磷脂) surrounding my nerve fibers and took away some of my abilities.I have been slowed down, but I am better able to view the important things in my little corner of the world, not to mention the world as a whole.I’ve learned to look for the goodness that lies in those who cross my path each day.I have found that it’s not how much you get done in one day,but how well you do those things you manage to complete.

I’ve also seen joy in the little things life presents.I have learned to look for laughter instead of tears. But when the tears come as they sometimes do,I let them absorb the pain, for with the pain can come understanding. And my eyes have been opened to the needs of others, needs I was never aware of before.I have even learned to take in and sort out comments expressed by others. If they are not uplifting (令人振奋的) or helpful,I can at least brush aside minor infractions (侵犯) and gain a laugh from well-intended remarks.Problems, troubles and ill-

considered remarks can either make us bitter,or we can choose to laugh at them and be joyful.I choose joy!

1.What does the writer mean by saying “They are still in awe of my continued existence.”?

A.They are amazed that I am still alive. B.They are afraid that I will die.

C.They still think of my existence a threat. D.They admire my positive attitude. 2.Which of the following is TRUE? A.The author has learned to hide her pain.

B.The author felt bitter when she heard her family doctor’s words. C.The author is unable to move now that she has multiple sclerosis. D.The author’s sickness has taught her to see the good in people. 3.The author uses the word “culprit” in Paragraph 9 to mean ________.

A.virus C.disease

B.cancer D.criminal

4.What can we learn from the text?

A.Hurtful remarks cause permanent damage. B.Serious illnesses always make people stronger. C.We need to face our problems bravely.

D.We should treat other’s ill-considered remarks as jokes.
