If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.

Carol, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards, and Rose said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures and they pay for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!

Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life.

Hello everyone. My name’s Sinead and I’d like to welcome you to the Study Centre. Can you all hear me? Oh good. Well, has anyone been here before? No? OK, let me explain what you can do in here. The Study Centre is more than just a place where you can come and sit and do your homework. As you can see, we’ve got books, DVDs, CDs…er…oh and some computers you can use language learning programs on.

Right, in here we have, on the left – above the computers – there are the DVDs and CDs. All the computers have headphones so you can listen and watch them here.

There are more computers in the Speaking Room, you can use those to practice your pronunciation. Er… on the shelves on the right you can see the novels, story books and many other books for research. If you want any writing practice, that’s where you can find the writing books. There are also dictionaries and grammar books on the back shelves. All exam and business books are kept behind the big desk.

There aren’t many rules here. Apart from the Speaking Room, we do ask you to be quiet so that people can get on with their work. You can borrow up to six books or one DVD at a time. Oh yes, and er opening times. We’re open at lunchtime and after school every day until 8. At the weekend we’re open 10 till 2. I think that’s all. Has anyone got any questions?

Welcome to our school library. Today I will introduce our library to you.

First of all, the library’s collection of books can be found on levels one to four of this building. Level One provides books on learning about human culture and map collections. On Level Two, you will find different kinds of newspapers and new magazines. Our science and engineering books can be found on Level Three. You can also find old magazines on this level. Group study rooms and our film collections are on Level Four.

Secondly, middle school students can check out up to five books and they can keep them for at most two weeks. High school students can borrow fifteen books at one time and keep them for two months. Books can be renewed up to two times. There is a 50-cent-a-day late fee for books which can not be returned on time. And the highest late fee is $15.00. Dictionaries cannot be borrowed from the library.

By the way, the library is open from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays, and from 9:00 am to 8:30 pm on Saturdays. The library is closed on Sundays. Thanks for listening.

Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me, if not, please let me know. I’m Professor John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time this course is offered, this room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure and there are many. There are about 1 million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing, you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are shortcuts. Shortcuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way: knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words. This is probably the

number one reason why this class is so popular.

现在请听一段独白,完成第14至16小题。 Attention, boys and girls!

Now, here are some information about our school sports meeting. The meeting will be held at Hammer Hill. It will last from 8:30 in the morning to 12:00 at noon this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You should enter the Sports Ground at 8:15 am. All of you should be in school uniform. The first two events are the 400-meter race and the long jump. There are six girl groups and eight boy groups. Next are the relay race and the high jump; both boys and girls will have three groups each. Finally, there will be a football match. The 400-meter race and the relay race will start in the southern part of the playground and the rest will take place in the center of the playground. The awards for the winner will be a school bag, second place a pencil box and third place a pen. Each of them will receive a medal. All of you should remember to take the following things: a flag to cheer the competitors on, some bottles of water and a hat. Our class has six competitiors who will take part in the competition; best wishes to them. That’s all. Now, you can have a short rest. Then you need to come back to have the English class.
