(1)That’s not the one he wants.

(2)That’s not the one he wants.

(3)That’s not the one he wants.

[e] [æ] bed bad; men, man; pen, pan; lend land

[i:] [ei] real rail; greet, great; mean, main; read raid

[e] [ai] bet bite; red write; said side, head, hide

[au] [ :] house horse; loud lord; south sauce; now nor; count corn;

[au] [Λ] found fond; gown gone; down don

[v] [w] vet wet; vest west; vine wine; very well

[s] [θ] sink think; sort thought; miss myth; mass math

[z] [ð] closing clothing; breeze breathe; bays bathes

[n] [η] thin thing; sin sing; ban bang; win wing; ran rang

a. Doctor, blackboard, handbag, sit down, next door, a bad cold, a good time, a red tie, good-bye, bad boy。

absent, box, eighth, picture, subject

a big change, a good child, a red shirt, a black jacket, keep them, write this, bedside like this, stop John, good change, lecture

good morning, big nose, last month, a good mechanic, bad meaning, beat me, bad name

如easily, go away,fifths、boys’n’girls(男孩们和女孩们)

试练习:this year, Would you do it? Can't you see it?

knock him out[ ] I’ve got a lot of work to do [ ]

Go on, stay up, who else, may I, my only son, her English teacher。

c.[r]+元音:词末连接音 [r]和与元音的连读,如there is [ðiriz]、idea of it。 d. / j /音连读

this year, bless you, as usual, here’s yours, I’ll meet you there, don’t you know that? Would you mind opening the door? Don’t you like them?

试练习:not at all, half an hour, I love you and all. after all

He thinks of that as a child thinks.

I met her in the railway station.

c. 代替词

Which book do you want? The small one.

d. 感叹词中的 what 和how

What a good day it is! How beautiful she is!

Wangfujing Street.

f. this 在这些短语中,this morning/afternoon/evening

Do you like it? Yes, I do. Are you a doctor? Yes, I am. Can you help me? Yes, I can.

I don't like you. He isn’t a worker.

They may come this evening. Can it be five already? He must be in the room. c.

In the box, he found a letter. He is the person I talked with.

If you wish, I'll visit you. When he comes, I'll tell him.

He couldn't come himself.

W1、Day 1 Much to Live For 生命的追求

There is so much I have not been, so much I have not seen. I have not thought and have not done or felt enough—the early sun, rain and the seasonal delight of flocks of ducks and geese in flight, the mysteries of late-at-night. I still need time to read a book, write poems, paint a picture, look at scenes and faces dear to me. There is something more to be of value—something I should find within myself—as peace of mind, patience, grace and being kind. I shall take and I shall give, while yet, there is so much to live for—rainbows, stars that gleam, the fields, the hills, the hope, the dreams, the truth that one must seek. I’ll stay here— treasure every day and love the world in my own way!

mystery: something that is not fully understood 秘密,谜

grace: a characteristic or quality pleasing for its charm

rainbow: a graded display of colors 虹,彩虹

Day 2 Yao Ming: New Center Style

If 20 years ago you asked the average American basketball fan if a

Chinese man could play center for an NBA team, his answer might have sounded something like this: “Ha ha. No, he’d be too short!” But now, the doubters are silent. Who closed their mouths? Houston Rockets,

2.26-meter-tall center Yao Ming, from China.

Yao Ming grew up in a family of basketball players. When he was

12, Yao Ming started going to an athletics academy outside of Shanghai and later spent a lot of time studying NBA games televised in China. All this has paid off. Yao’s first NBA honor was his ranking as

number-one draft pick, and he’s been elected for a Rookie-of-the-Month award. Yao Ming has a style different from those of tall centers in the past.

He rarely goes for the flashy slams. He’d rather show off his silk-smooth free-throw shots, or use his height to pop in jump shots from the three-point line.

athletics: activities, such as sports, exercises, and games, that require physical skill 体育运动 academy: 学院

televise: to broadcast or be broadcast by television

Day 3 Tall Tale

A friend told me this story. He can stretch the truth a bit, so I’m not sure whether to believe him. But on the other hand, truth can be stranger than fiction! What do you think?

Two brothers were watching a horror film on video late one night. One brother dozed off and dreamed that he was being chased by the crazy man from the movie, who was trying to kill him. In the dream, he hid in a cupboard. There was no sound except his heart pounding, and he had no idea where his crazed captor was. He was terrified! At that moment, the video finished, and his brother put his hand on the shoulder of his sleeping sibling to wake him. The shock at that tense moment was enough

that the sleeping brother suffered a massive heart attack and died instantly.

stretch ... a bit:夸大事实,言过其实 horror film:恐怖电影 doze off:打瞌睡 cupboard: a closet or cabinet, usually with shelves for storing food, crockery, and utensils 橱柜 pounding: 跳动声,重击声

captor: one that takes another as a captive 捕捉者

terrified: deeply afraid 恐惧的

sibling: one of two or more individuals having one or both parents in common; a brother or sister

The answer:

Of course it’s not true! If he died instantly, how would anyone know what his

dream was about?

And think again:

There is a girl behind each boy, and a boy behind each girl. How many children

are needed to do this?

The answer:

It can be done with just two children: only one boy and one girl are needed if they stand back to back!

Day 4 Nanotechnology: Beyond Your Wildest Dreams

Nanotechnology is the science of moving individual atoms around and putting them precisely where we want. Since everything is composed of atoms, by doing this we can, in theory, construct anything we want. For example, by moving around the atoms in a piece of coal, we could create a diamond.

Currently, nanotechnology is still quite crude. Scientists can alter the

properties of things like plastics or cloth to make them harder or softer or more durable, but they can’t build something new from a collection of

atoms. Why? Well, because things are made up of billions of atoms and it takes too long to move them around.

So, the next big step in nanotechnology will be building machines that can do this automatically. Once we have these we should be able to

make almost anything with no waste and no pollution, at very little cost. Scientists think that the first “Universal Assembler” might be built in around 15 years.

atom: a part or particle considered to be an irreducible constituent of a specified

system 原子

precisely: in a precise manner

be composed of: 由 组成,由 构成

construct: to form by assembling or combining parts; build 建造

currently: belonging to the present time 目前

crude: unripe or immature 未成熟的 alter: to change or become different 改变 property: a characteristic trait or peculiarity, especially one serving to define or describe its

possessor 特性,属性 durable: capable of withstanding wear and tear or decay 耐久的

Day 5 Jimmy: Picture Books for Adults

Artists and authors use many different ways to talk about society; many write novels, while others paint pictures. An artist in Taipei has found a different way to talk about life, people, and the problems we all face. His name is Jimmy Liao, and he creates illustrated books.

Jimmy is both an illustrator and an author. He draws all of the colorful pictures in his books and writes all of the storylines. His small paperback books usually have only one or two lines of text per page, the rest being filled by his cute, simple drawings. Simplicity is one of Jimmy’s strong points; he doesn’t lose the reader in complex plots or dialogues. Jimmy’s books speak to readers about the ups and downs of living in the modern world. One of his most popular stories, Turning Left,

Turning Right, tells of a short romance between a couple that live next to each other. The lonely pair meet one day in the park and immediately fall in love. When they leave each other at the end of a fun-filled day, they exchange telephone numbers, but the rain causes the numbers to become illegible. They are unable to contact each other, and soon return to their lonely lives.

Sad, right? Don’t start crying yet; there’s a catch to the story. You see,

this man and woman actually live in the same building! The problem is, when they leave their apartments, one always turns to the left, while the other always turns to the right. The result is that they never realize they are neighbors. The lesson of the story? Life is in the details: things that seem small and insignificant can actually turn out to be important. And this is another of Jimmy’s talents: he shows his readers how the “little things”in life are often more important than we realize.

paperback: a book having a flexible paper binding

drawing: the art of representing objects or forms on a surface chiefly by means of lines 线条 simplicity: the property, condition, or quality of being simple or uncombined 简单 plot: the plan of events or main story in a narrative or drama 情节

romance: a love affair

illegible: not legible or decipherable

W2、Day 1 Youth

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the

soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every being’s heart the lure of

wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what’s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at

twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

—— Samuel Ullman
